This is a mere symptom, not the disease. A generation ago, no Catholic priest would have participated that amazing travesty, and had one tried, the Catholic audience would have physically stopped him, and his bishop would have disciplined him; whether in Sao Paulo or St. Louis MO.
I think we need to recognize that this isn’t about the silliness of “liturgical dance”, it’s about the attitudes of our hierarchy and clergy who, since VCII, have given themselves license to freely experiment with, to change, and to abuse the liturgy, which for 99.9% of Catholics is their only contact with their Church and religious community. Control that interface and you control the Church. Change it, and you change the Church.
This is an agenda to change the Church, not by papal direction or theological debate in Vatican chambers, but by gradually shifting the sense and framework of Catholicism among the faithful to align with the secular humanist world view that overwhelmed higher education in the West in the 50’s and 60’s. It’s been cultivated through the institutions of religious training since then, and is now promoted through episcopal authority by those who rose through the system with it.
The age of that Brazilian"priest" (he appears to be over 50) and the open public venue shows how firmly these ideas are now rooted in our Church. Regardless of tired rumors that a rescueing cavalry will arrive from Rome any day, the incidence and acceptance of these profoundly abusive practices are growing.
So its not really about its dancing or music or ad-libbing the Consecration or turning glorious churches built by the sweat and devotion of our immigrant parents into sterile warehouses. It’s about how two generations of ideological training of priests and nuns is radically changing the practice of Catholicism, and by doing so, the way Catholics understand their faith and relationship with Christ. While Rome rearranges the furniture, the bishops are moving the house.
