point of clarification: the Catholic idea of free will, amply explained in the CCC, and so-called “Catholic” existentialism are NOT the same thing, and in fact are diametrically opposed.

:hmmm:
that’s right… 🙂 thanks.

Jason,
that makes much more better sense than
before. I do believe that I exist for a reason
but there are some times in my life that I believe
I dont. But anywho thanks for reminding why we
are all here… for a reason, not exactly for a reason
but a reason for God… God is the reason we are all
here on this catholic board. Thats probably the reason why im here
asking about different questions in my mind… pondering different things. Existentialism is just a big word for free choice like you said and that probably what made me so confused at the time,
Im not as smart as you on the bible either or Catholicism.
So anywho thanks in advance, for everything.
This has been a big help to me.

Thanks!

“Ding dong, the witch is dead…” the wicked witch of the… West!

Free choice is not existentialism! Free choice and existentialism are actually opposite from one another. Free choice says that you have options. But existentialism says that there are no options, only whatever you want there to be.

Existence precedes realization and understanding, but existence doesn’t precede all essence around and in me. Existence precedes my CHOICE; but what I choose is not “essence.” What is choose is, all in all, a path which I did not create: walking the path is not the same thing as creating the actual, essential path.

The biggest problem with existentialism is its lack of clarity: it is a half-baked, illogical and incomplete “philosophy” that prays fully on our desire for freedom. Truly though, existentialism is not freedom: existentialism murders the options we choose between, by ridding all options of existence.

Who’s existence precedes what essence? Unclarified, that original statement quietly injects the philosophy of SOLIPSISM into the innocent mind. Sure, God’s existence preceded all “essence.” But me? When I close my eyes and walk down the street, eventually I’m going to get hit by a car, or bang into something… Now tell me my existence created that essence! Existence precedes realization and understanding, not essence.

Now in terms of human creativity: MY existence precedes some “essence.”

But,
**GOD’S **existence precedes ALL essence. So please note: existentialism is describing: God.

***Hypothetical situation------->
…say, five years before I was born, another existence “created” or realized an essence. So we have this essence, before I was born. Right? Then comes the magical day: my existence. Now, I ask: what about that essence another existence “created” or knew about? Did it not precede me? If another existence knows that it did indeed precede me, what then? In order to follow existentialism to the bone, mustn’t we first see it for what is? It is solipsism.

Existentialism isn’t actually about free choice: it is about solipsism, and only solipsism. For if everything and everyone around me (the essence of “my reality”) exists after I first existed, that is solipsism.

Now… I’m confident that solipsism has already been disproved: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=14590 (please see post number 8. Seriously, go ahead and skip the first post)

Whew!
After this, I think I’m done with this whole business of “thinking!” Tonight I’m really going to enjoy some delicious French coffee (which I did not precede), while relaxing and fellowshipping with loved ones (some of which are older than I!). Now perhaps I’ll drop out of school and work my way up to a Mc Donald’s manager! Maybe take the sane road, and enjoy life a little… 🙂

Now… if anyone tries to say existentialism is true, I know they’re either lying or they’re insane!!! or stupid…

Best wishes to all.

For whatever it is I’ve done, you are of course welcome. But just remember: I’m not the one who can make you choose the right way: you are. So thank yourself for making that choice… or something like that. 🙂

No, no let’s not go there… I feel stupid for even having let these crazy philosophies seep into my mind. 😦
I should have stayed with my Love, Truth from the beginnnig. You may find, it really solves a lot of problems!

God bless you Dayna, and everyone else who’s had to endure this crazy thread. 😃

'Twas the darndest thing… that night, as I sipped my hot beverage, all went bitter; and what should have been suddenly became not! Oh my! Those French need to change a few things, I say indeed!

(I’m sure I’m abusing this whole “posting” thing… sorry, all you blessed administrators… :o God still has a little more left to fix about me! 😛 )
