I was discussing the date of Christmas with a baptist friend and he brought up an interesting theory.

Everyone has heard that the church chose dec 25 because of the pagan celibrating the solces. (sorry not a good speller). However here is his theory.
Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist was at the offering of incense and sacrfice ( his priestly duties), That is Yom Kippar. which falls either later sept or early october…
then Gabriel visits the Virgin Mary, to anouncee the upcoming birth of Jesus, and says " Your cousin Elizibeth is 6 months Pregenet. Do the math…six months fron later sept is the later part of march, nine months from then is the later part of december…mmmmmmm
interesting

Jews have a number of religious festivals apart from Yom Kippur - Rosh Hashanah, Purim, Passover and Hanukkah come to mind … could probably have been any one of them.

In fact I believe incense and sacrifice were offered DAILY in the temple, morning and evening.

Does it make any difference if Jesus was born on December 25 or not. How would that impact anyone’s faith?

Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich said that Jesus was born very early in the day on November 25th, according to private revelations to her from God.

Its not important When our Lord was born as much as He WAS born. God became Man…simply an AWESOME testimony of love from God to us.👍

Those who get hung up on dates are forgetting the REAL message of our Lords Birth.

I believe I read somewhere that Dec 25 was a sort of backed into
“the key date is Mar 25 which was both Passover and the consception of Jesus”
We associate Jesus as our Passover
Dec 25 is simply 9 months from Passover
Has anyone else ever heard this
I’ll try to find my source

I have heard that it couldn’t have been December that Jesus was born, as in the Northern Hemisphere, sheep do not lay outside in the paddocks at night.

It was something to that effect.

But, this was the Birth of Christ, the most special birth ever.

Maybe the sheep knew this too, and were given extra warmth that winter’s night by God.

Just my opinion.

Ahh,
Someone is thinking!
Yes shepherds abiding in the fields means EARLY SPRING.
So Why December 25th?
Well, it all comes back to the Judeans,
Think of Hannuchah.
In their calendar, it is celebrated on the 25th day of the 12th month, at least in the Gallilean calendar.
What does Hannuchah celebrate?
Well, it is the renewal of the Temple.
Did not Our Lord state that his body was the Temple.
Did He not purge the Judean Temple.
Does not our queen celebrate two birthdays, one, her natural anniversary, and the other, her official anniversary.
What could be more natural than for Our Lord to celebrate the renewal of the Temple as His official birthday?

No but I have always wondered why we celebrate Jesus’ birth and Marry’s conception but only to a lesser extent, Jesus’ conception and to a much much lesser extent, Mary’s birth. I probably confused you with my post but you can figure out what I mean.

Here’s a fellow who supposes Our Lord was born during Sukkot (specifically, Saturday, September 30, 1BC)
Is Dec. 25 really Jesus’ birthday?
By Craig Harris
HERALD-PRESS (PALESTINE, Texas)
We celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25 each year, but is that really Jesus’ birthday?
Probably not. We celebrate Christmas on that day because Constantine, the first Christian Roman emperor, declared it in the year A.D. 320. Scholars believe he did this because Christians were already celebrating Christ’s birthday on that date, the Roman holiday Saturnalia, to avoid persecution.
In fact, the Bible may teach that Jesus was born on the first day of the Jewish festival called The Feast of Tabernacles (or Booths). John 1:14 says Jesus came and “tabernacled” with us – literally “pitched his tent with us”. The Feast of Tabernacles was a Jewish holiday that celebrated “God coming and dwelling with us”. It begins on the Jewish date Tishri 15. It celebrates Moses’ building God a tent in the desert.

The way I understand this… John the Baptist said that he would decrease and Jesus would increase… the time that the sun increases and the darkness decreases is as well the date closest to the winter solstice having replaced the Pagan’s feast .

Also, the time of death of someone through Hebrew tradition was closely related to the time of birth. Jesus became man at the Annunciation. He was “born” into humanity the same time of year as the Passover, which is also when his body became “born” into eternity. Though He IS eternal, the body that Mother Mary through the Holy Spirit provided did not become eternal until His Death and Resurrection.

That is what I was taught, and it made sense to me.

December 25 is 9 months from the Annunciation on March 25.
Duh !!!
😃

Among scholars who study a discipline known as Biblical chronology, there is no agreement as to the year or time of year of the Birth of Christ. Dates for the year range from 15 B.C. to 1 A.D.

As to the time of year, there is also no agreement. Some place the Birth in the fall, others the winter, others the spring.

St. John Chysostom gave a famous sermon arguing that Christ was actually born on Dec. 25th. Others think November or January or springtime.

In Palestine the sheep indeed are out to pasture during December. This is the green season. Summer is brown and not much to graze on.

For what is worth, when the Roman Empire conducted a census in Gaul (modern France) the emperor Claudius (r. 41-54 AD) specifically carried it out in the summer as a way to facilitate necessary travel. Of course the weather in Judea is vastly different than Gaul, and such a stipulation might not be needed.
