Traditionalist are not to be blamed here. Why are we arguing about traditionalist, they are not causing the halloween Mass. The website Closed Cafeteria is not a traditionalist blog. The fact is that this sacrilege has occured and at least somebody is trying to get the information out.

I’m not really shocked. I suspect a bunch of people attending the mass were oblivious to any implications to what they saw. The average parishioner does not have the sensibilities of CAF residents. I’ve been to a very liberal parish before (I remain silent about the county…)

Certain understandings that people at CAF take for granted are completely missing in some. They weren’t raised to have them.

I don’t understand how anyone could not  at the sight of someone dressed as Satan handling our Lord?? Are they completly spiritually bankrupt or are they just that STUPID?

Gosh, why didn’t they dress up as Abortion Providers… they could’ve had a mangled baby hanging out of their pocket. Why not dress as Hitler? OOOOH… maybe someone could’ve dressed up as Judas… in between passing out the host, they could’ve jingled some pieces of silver. Then there’s always the old standby… the pregnant nun costume. That would’ve been good for a few laughs.

Pathetic.

This is just horrible. Just terrible. I am shocked that a Catholic parish would do something so stupid. Pope St. Pius X would be rolling over in his grave. Looks like the keyboard player/musical director is from Hell. St. John Chrosystom said that the streets of hell are paved with the skulls of bishops so what makes us think that the streets won’t be paved with the blasphemous likes of these people?

I never thought I would see anything as sacrilegious as this.

Whoever taped this should tape a few more “events”, burn them onto a CD and send them off to every congregation they can think of in Rome. I’m just going to cut and paste our story below because I tire of writing it. Let’s not just complain and bicker about this, let’s do something!!!

Our bishop was of retirement age. Our diocese was very abuse ridden. We launched a final campaign to lobby for an orthodox replacement. We launched a website and some in our group gathered up all of the documentation and examples of abuses over the years (actually, a lot of it was recent since we were always being expose to it) and burned it onto a multi-media CD. It had video of clown masses, awful diocesan letters, letters to us from our Bishop, etc., etc., etc. They sent it off to many offices in Rome including the Pope, Cardinal Ratzinger’s office, Congragation of Bishops, etc., the Papal Nuncio. A few months later we were assigned a GREAT bishop. We wondered for a few months if anything we did helped and then Cardinal Ratzinger called a priest friend of ours to his office and asked him if he knew the people who were lobbying for an orthodox replacement. He vouched for us and Cardinal Ratzinger told him to tell us that the CD was the biggest thing to ever hit Rome and that everyone (presumably even the Pope) had seen it and it had been passed around. He also said we should spread this method to others. We had another independent confirmation of the success of the CD when one of us was vacationing in Rome. They ran into a friend who had a priest from the Congregation of Bishops with him. They were introduced as being from our diocese and the first words out of this priests mouth were “Are you the ones who put together that CD?” He said it was very helpful to see first hand what was happening in our diocese. If anyone else would like more info, please PM me.

No one said traditionalists. The phrase used was “radical traditionalist.”

They really shouldn’t, and really plain common sense should tell them that a Mass with people wearing Halloween costumes is plain wrong.

Now that was abuse.

I feel liturgically abused watching it!

Insane…

I’ll stick to my historical self here, but I think many were like me. I didn’t think of Halloween as pagan. It was just a happy family tradition, part of life, people wore costumes at work, it was accepted at school (and hence everywhere, duh! (I mean I would have thought “duh” back then)). Sure, maybe I could have analyzed it, but I didn’t. It was clear to me that the local parish would do things to get the youth involved. So if I had gone to mass on Halloween and found the choir in costumes, I would have shrugged and classed it with having the youth gather around the altar for the consecration. It would have been just one of those things that parishes do now and then for some reason.

It is an assumption that your typical uninformed Catholic knows what can and can’t be done at mass. I didn’t, and I wasn’t in the least rebellious in that sort of matter. If they did it at mass, I assumed that was just fine, otherwise they would not have done it. I found it weird when they didn’t do the Creed. I had no idea back then that sometimes it isn’t done. I couldn’t tell a good from a bad variation. Short of them burning down the building with us all locked inside, I would have assumed it was just some strange day where the order was all mixed up. After all, every so often they do something odd, like bless animals, hold crossed candles at your neck, line up to kiss the cross, have a procession of little dressed up kids (I didn’t know these were saints), do strange dances, perform dialogued reading, sing jamboree music, etc.

I didn’t have a concept of a “liturgical abuse”. What you saw was what you got. Simple. I didn’t know canon law existed for *years *as a Catholic, nor did I have any concept of a master Latin version of the mass that is translated out into the different tongues. If I had been told, I would have just filed it away as some factoid. It would not have signified something about how the mass can’t be changed unless someone had pointed it out.

Maybe I might have laughed at the incongruity of a Satan costume at mass, but Satan was more comical to me back then. I had no image of him as a terrifying entity, other than as a vague doctrinal memorized statement. The red guy with a pitchfork was the only concrete Satan that I had experienced (well, that is not quite expressed correctly, but I can’t figure how to say it). No surprise to see that costume with other Halloween costumes.

Perhaps their primary image of the mass is as a community gathering or celebration where people are united and receive Jesus as their strength in communion. It is hardly their fault it has always seemed that way at their parish. I don’t expect them to expect anything else unless they are told to do so. I didn’t used to envision mass as almost standing in the throne room of God with the angels with those four living creatures and everyone praising God and falling before the Lamb standing as though slain. Heaven is right there! It used to be more like a family gathering.

Does anyone know if there’s an email address to the Papal Nuncio, or a Cardinal at the Vatican? If you do know of it, then please post it or a link so that all of us at CAF can email the nuncio, or some other higher Cardinal to report this disgusting Sacrilege.

I am pessimistic enough to assume that half of them don’t really know what the Eucharist is, and the other half don’t believe in satan. 😦

Either they don’t know what the Eucharist of our Lord is, the don’t believe in Satan, or they don’t believe in God.

I don’t think so as well, at least not entirely. That being said, there is still a difference between a Halloween party and a Mass. That should’ve been obvious, even if one doesn’t know where Halloween came from. And, it is quite obvious that proper dress code should be observed at Mass. That again is simply common sense. Being in costume at Mass is hardly being in proper decorum. That alone should’ve sent warning bells off. It doesn’t need any guidelines at all, at least not something so elaborate. It’s just common sense.

I was stunned as I was watching that video. Then I saw the one where he talked about all of the costumes he had worn from previous years. PREVIOUS YEARS – this isn’t a new thing for him. Then to top it all off, he left, during Mass, and came out in a Barney costume. Wow!

The really sad thing that struck me was watching communion. There were people there who were not in costume who went to receive Jesus and actually looked afraid. That is sad.

This is just plain wrong.

After you tried the (arch)bishop, perhaps it is best to start with either the Apostolic Nuncio or the Prefect for the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments. It does not help to complain to everyone on the list, since not all have jurisdiction in this matter, no matter how revolting it is. If you write to the pope, then there is no need to contact the others, since what he rules cannot be overruled.

It also helps to know exactly which church or chapel this is occuring in…it doesn’t help that it is in “Orange County.” The pope cannot discipline one w/o knowing who is involved. Perhaps it is time to start up the ecclesiastical courts, like the ones in other churches----they are provided for in canon law.

Reminds me of the story of the Teacher who caugh three students on their knees in the corner of her classroom. She asked them what they were doing and they said “shooting craps” She said"good, for a moment there i was afraid you were praying"
What???!!! And where was this?!!!

Why couldn’t they have a Mass for the Vigil of All Saints’ Day instead?
