This is a thread to test your powers of intellect and imagination. C.S. Lewis (The Screwtape Letters) and Peter Kreetft (The Snakebite Letters) would approve.

If you were one of the Devil’s lieutenants, how would you counsel him to ruin the human race and increase the population of hell?

Or, what strategies has the Devil already used with greatest success?

Any takers?

Moral relativism. Part of Catholicism’s success, I argue, is it’s moral absolutism, so he convinces people to embrace the polar opposite.

Hi, Charlie! One strategy the Devil has used extremely successfully is to tempt human beings to think they are absolute masters of themselves and of this planet. The bloodstained history of mankind is ample evidence of the horrific amount of unnecessary suffering and death caused by the lust for power. Nietszche even preached the gospel of the Superman which led to the diabolical Holocaust of millions of Jews. His belief in the Will to Power, contempt for Christianity as a religion of weakness and proclamation of the “Death of God” eventually culminated in his own insanity. Dostoievsky had pointed out that everything is permissible if God doesn’t exist. Historical events have demonstrated time and time again that the conscious or unconscious belief that we are the authors of morality is a blank cheque for unlimited self-interest and injustice on a worldwide scale. The truth that freedom is our greatest gift is cleverly distorted to mean we should be absolutely free to do what we like with our life on this earth - and to hell with anyone who tries to stop us! In reality we are well on the road to hell when we constantly put ourselves before everyone else…

Convincing that portion of humanity that he does not exist. If the devil does not exist, then no hell, no consequences for what is done. A free pass to do anything and everything and no conscious or consequences about it or for it. I would say this is one of his greatest successes at this present time.

Delegate as much temporal authority to the Vatican, as possible.

idk, this is a ‘toughy’. Why don’t you ask the devil’s ‘captain’–Pope Ratzinger?

“Do what you will, but harm none.”

“Christianity is too old-fashioned and unrealistic.”

“It’s only sex. It doesn’t mean anything.”

“All religions are paths to God.”

“Be spiritual, but not religious.”

“All power and knowledge are already within you.”

“We are all equal parts of the Divine Cosmic Space Muffin.”

This goes for Loboto-me, too - C.S.Lewis said this years ago 😃

How can you know this or even suppose it when you are not supposed to believe there is a devil? If you don’t believe in a devil, how could you say that the devil’s “captain” is Pope Benedict? My understanding is that if you are atheist you do not believe in a heaven or hell. So the statement above is a little out of place for you, I would think.

The etymology of ‘atheist’ implies that I either do not support and/or believe in a god.

This has no bearing on whether I believe in heaven, hell, or devil, which theoretically can be isolated from the idea of god.

Nice attempt at logical gymnastics, but I’m afraid you’re too stiff. 😉

Make Church teaching so difficult and unpleasant to follow, that most Catholics will either be cafeteria Catholics or leave altogether.

I do not do logical gymnastics and stiff I may be but my statement stands as stated.

Yeah, and it was well-answered, and–as my answer demonstrated–has no bearing on whether I can participate in this discussion, regardless of my beliefs about God.

I don’t believe anything was implied as to whether you could participate in this discussion. You just seem to be using information that Christians use on the subject when you list yourself as atheist just makes one wonder where your precise knowledge comes from, especially on the Pope, since you seem so sure.

If I believed in the Devil, I would say some of his most successful tactics might have been:

-send agents to infiltrate all faiths who could then twist whatever doctrines the faithful revere around to create turmoil and hostility.

-encourage disunity among all religions, to create as many factions as possible so that no one faith, let alone one denomination of a particular faith, could credibly be seen as the correct one.
  • promote sexual deviants into the major orthodox churches, and con-men into the more liberal ones, so that Christianity becomes synonymous with hypocrisy to many people, further destroying it’s credibility.
  • promote euthanasia and abortion as merciful, so that their practice becomes more common. In this way, people will come to more easily accept life in terms of it’s value to society, instead of to God. This is absolutely necessary to separate man from God. Once we can decide who “deserves” life more, we can never again reasonably justify the value of all life, and therefore will continue to kill for convenience and financial issues while believing we are doing the right thing.
-use popular media figures to promote secularism, atheism, casual sex, and disrespect of anything old among young people so that they learn these things are really cool and feel disconnected from anything associated with traditional culture or religion.

-promote the differences between races, men and women, young and old, gay and straight so that even those who still share a religion or culture will be able to remain hostile at something

-promote collectivism so that individuals can lose their personal senses of responsibility over their neighbor’s well-being

-use the internet to showcase as much deviant behavior as possible, to give the impression that everyone is taking part-that way people will be led to believe that the majority of people are this bad and sick behavior will become normalized.
