magic << Why oh why do you still believe in the nonsense of evolution? >>

Evidence is persuasive, and all of your objections are answered here at TalkOrigins. Take a look. Your logic is poor, if there is one true transitional fossil that’s it, creationism is finished. In fact there are thousands. Three reasons: (1) Many lines of evidence, (2) the modern Popes accept evolution, and (3) truth cannot contradict truth.

Some popes accepted that the earth was flat, and that the sun revolved around the Earth too. Evolution does not come under ex cathedra teaching on Faith and Morals, so that is not a valid argument.

I agree that truth cannot contradict truth, but it can contradict theory, and that is what it still is at this stage, a theory.

Hi Eileen, Thats because some of the popes did not read Isaiah 40;22. God Bless

Not only some of the popes. :rotfl:

Douglas Adams had an interesting theory about the dinosaurs, don’t you think? More entertaining than Darwin, anyway.

Did you know they have reported many sightings of live dinosaurs in remote parts of the African jungle. God Bless

You do not know what a scientific theory is then. A scientific theory is not a guess or hunch, but an explanation for something well tested and well substantiated by much evidence that ties together various facts and observations. Evolution is a theory in the same sense that gravity is a theory, there is also atomic theory, cell theory, the germ theory of disease, etc. All well supported.

“Truth cannot contradict truth” (as John Paul II noted in his statement on evolution), and the truth is evolution is well substantiated by many lines of evidence. It is true, but so is the Catholic faith true.

Uh oh the creationist-concordist belief that “the Bible teaches the earth is spherical.” That is reading into that verse I’m afraid as Robert Schneider shows in an article for the Christian ASA here:

“The critical line in Hebrew [of Isaiah 40:22] reads (transliterated and omitting vowels): hyshb 'l hwg h’rtz, which my colleague Dr. Robert Suder translates: ‘the one dwelling on the circle/horizon of the land.’ A survey of Hebrew lexica and theological wordbooks yields much information about the key word hwg (chûgh)…All but one of these contexts [where the Hebrew word appears] are cosmological, and in fact four of the five uses of chûgh occur in creation hymns. Isaiah 40:22a describes God as sitting/ dwelling above ‘the circle of the earth’ which God laid out – with a compass, as Job 26:10 and Proverbs 8:27 suggest, for the latter verses describe the act of inscribing the circle that fixes the boundary between the earth and the deep…Looking at these usages together, I am hard put to see how anyone could justify rendering chûgh in Isaiah 40:22a as ‘sphericity.’…if the translators [of the LXX] were familiar with the concept of a spherical earth taught at the Museon of Alexandria, then the center of Greek science, they give no hint of it in their translation of chûgh…”

“…a circle is no more a sphere in Scripture than it is in geometry. The preponderance of philological evidence and the translations of ancient scholars and modern experts alike provide overwhelming testimony that Isaiah 40:22a does not refer to a spherical earth. There is simply no warrant for Eastman, Sarfati, and Morris [prominent young-earth creationists] to declare, contrary to its plain sense and in violation of its semantic domain, that chûgh literally means sphericity. They have read the earth’s sphericity into the text, not out of it.” (Robert J. Schneider, essay for the [Christian] American Scientific Affiliation, September 2001)

Theologian and physicist Fr. Stanley Jaki would also disagree with the creationist use of Isaiah. The Bible is not a scientific text, and the case can be made that the world of the Bible authors was flat. Fr. Jaki makes the case here:

“If asked about his physical surroundings or about the physical world at large, the typical Israelite would have given a reply very irritating to the modern mind. It is irritating to say the least to hear that the earth is a flat disk, the sky an inverted hard bowl, and that the two form a vast tent-like structure. Of course, other inhabitants of the ancient Near-East would have given similar answers…To be sure, much the same would have been done by a typical ancient Egyptian and Babylonian…The hardness of the sky, but especially the immobility of the earth, had to appear all the more a divinely ordained physical fact as, according to the Bible, a mere man, Joshua, could be authorized by God to stop the sun and the moon in their tracks and, apparently, for a whole day…Obviously, to modern eyes dazzled by space rockets cruising along ‘world lines’ set by Einstein’s four-dimensional cosmology nothing could seem more jarring than the Bible’s physical world, which is little more than a glorified tent. To that tent the Bible assigns the sky as its cover and the earth as its floor, though hardly in a consistent way. In Genesis 1 the sky is a firmament, that is, a hard metal bowl, whereas in Psalm 104 and Isaiah 45:24 it is more like a canvas that can be stretched out…Herein lies one of the non-trivially unscientific aspects of the world as described in the Bible…Well before the advent of modern science, and indeed of heliocentrism, the contrast between that biblical world-tent and the world of Aristotelian-Ptolemaic geocentrism had to appear enormous.” (Fr. Stanley Jaki, Bible and Science [Christendom Press, 1996], pages 19-25)

All I’m saying, and the Popes are saying (see John Paul II on Cosmology and Fundamental Physics to the PAS that I’ve quoted before) is the Bible does not teach modern science, and the science of the biblical authors was an “ancient” science (flat-domed earth, and geocentrism). The Fathers were mostly geocentrists (only a few were flat earthers), and they interpreted the flat-earth Bible in light of their science. Just as we should interpret the Bible in light of modern science (old earth and evolution).

I’m curious about the position of those who do not accept biological evolution on other areas of science. What about commonly accepted scientific findings about galactic formation, stellar evolution, novas, supernovas, and the formation of the elements of the periodic table? Do those who oppose biological evolution also oppose theories of the evolution of the universe, stars, galaxies, and planets?

Well Jay who says the dinosaurs are that old??? you need to do a google search on the Kolbe center and visi Bob Sungenis’ web site—read his article “DE-evolution of Evolution” by Dr. Terry Jackson–its great----there is a ton of evidence that dinosaurs arent that old-------
Many of the stars in the night sky are billions of light years away. If the light has taken billions of years to reach the Earth then certainly the universe can not be simply a few thousand years old.

If the universe is billions of years old then there is no problem with dinosaurs that were here just a few million years ago.

Unless of course there actually is a Creator God who decided to make it like that.

I’m saying goodbye to this thread, some of you guys are taking this so seriously, as if our eternal salvation depended on believing one view or the other. That’s too heavy for such a subject. 👋

Surely nobody really believes the earth is only about 6000 years old??

…you need to do a google search on the Kolbe center…one of the Kolbe scientists, Dr. Guy Berthault, a member of the French Academy of Sciences, has proven beyond little doubt that Charles Lyell’s theory of the geologic column (i.e., that the layers of sediment were formed over millions of years) is false …
Any reason for the condescending “timmy boy” quip, btw?? :hmmm:

And I think you’ll have to do lot’s more than just “go to the Kolbe Center”. For exaple, try having a look at these pages and links that discuss Guy Berthault research. Dr. Henke’s index page is here.
Berthault’s research is quite interesting, according to Dr. Henke; it just doesn’t say what he says it does to a geologist.

If the earth is only 6,000 years old, what about the age of the universe?

I’ve read through the pages you marked. It seems to me Berthault should be writing fiction scripts for Hollywood movies!

where you at Timmy----here is another argument----

The Earth’s magnetic field is decaying too fast
The total energy stored in the Earth’s magnetic field has steadily decreased by a factor of 2.7 over the past 1000 years.11 Evolutionary theories explaining this rapid decrease, as well as how the Earth could have maintained its magnetic field for billions of years, are very complex and inadequate.

A much better creationist theory exists. It is straightforward, based on sound physics, and explains many features of the field: its creation, rapid reversals during the Genesis flood, surface intensity decreases and increases until the time of Christ, and a steady decay since then.12 This theory matches paleomagnetic, historic, and present data.13 The main result is that the field’s total energy (not surface intensity) has always decayed at least as fast as now. At that rate the field could not be more than 10,000 years old.14 [See also The Earth’s magnetic field: Evidence that the Earth is young.]

Hey, mcpeake, ever heard the expression “You can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar”. Well, or something like that - I think you get the idea. So I repeat my question - any reason for the condescending “timmy boy” quip?

As for your “argument”, see here. There are others. Not so cut and dried when you get more than one person talking, is it? 😉

Same age. It was all created at the same time according to Gods Word. Read the book of Genesis,it will help. 👍 God Bless
