This is critically important for all those who live in New York.
If you do not live in New York, you may want to pass this Decree on to your Diocese Bishop.
This decree should be sent throughout the entire USA by each Diocese Bishop.

**" ** (1) No member of the clergy (priest or deacon) incardinated in the Archdiocese of New York, or any person while acting as an employee of the Church, may participate in the civil solemnization or celebration of a same-sex marriage, which includes but is not limited to providing services, accommodations, advantages, facilities, good or privileges for such events.
Ecclesiastical solemnization or celebration of same-sex marriages is expressly forbidden by Canon law.

(2) No Catholic facility or property, including but not limited to parishes, missions, chapels, meeting halls, Catholic educational, health, or charitable institutions or benevolent orders, or any place dedicated, consecrated, or used for Catholic worship may be used for the solemnization or consecration of same-sex marriages.

(3) No items dedicated, consecrated, or used for the celebration of Catholic liturgy or sacred worship, including but not limited to sacred vessels, vestments, liturgical books or other items may be used for the civil solemnization of a same-sex marriage.

(4) Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the imposition of canonical sanctions. "

God bless the Archbishop! And may every Catholic bishop and diocese in the world follow his lead. 👍

Good. But why nothing about excommunicating or denying communion to Gay ‘marriage’ advocates like Andrew Cuomo?

Wow! 👍

Too bad the Vatican didn’t adopt this law and make it binding on all practicing Catholics.

I’m glad he did this, but where was he when they were passing the law in New York? He was literally out of the state, and then didn’t even mention it in his sermon the following Sunday. Then he went so far as to apologize to the “gay community”. This seems like too little too late. The damage has been done, and the Church is being set up for major persecution.

Greetings to those posting and or reading this thread,

That would be a good example for all Bishops of the Church to follow.

God Bless.

Greetings A Catholic,

Why would he “apologize” to the gay community? He should not apologize for laying down the law and following morals and Church Teaching. I don’t understand.

The Church will always be persecuted because it’s teaching is different and contrary to that of the world’s way of living. May the Church never cease in its Teaching and standing up against immorality wherever it may be found.

God Bless.

That’s a very good question, but here is his apology:

*While expressing sadness and disappointment that New York will indeed become the 6th and largest state to legalize same-sex marriage, Archbishop Dolan did apologize to the gay community, saying his opposition was based on a pro-marriage stance, not an anti-gay bias.

“I say to the gay community, I love you very much,” Archbishop Dolan proclaimed. “If anything I ever said or did would have you believe I have anything less than love and respect for you, I apologize.”*

I have to say I really dislike the fact that he used the words “gay community.” I hate the fact that homosexuals have co-opted the word “gay” and I don’t think the Archbishop of NY and the President of the Bishops Council should be using it.

Greetings A Catholic,

Okay I can see that he is NOT apologizing for what I thought he was apologizing for in the first place. That is okay now. Yes I too dislike the fact that the used the words “gay community” but what else are you going to call them? For some reason they take a real offence to homosexuals but that is what they are. Perhaps he only used it as a term of diplomacy, I say forget diplomacy and say things directly and bluntly so that there is no need of questioning.

God Bless.

Canonical sanctions means excommunication.

Regarding NY Gov Andrew Cuomo, and those NY Catholic politicians who continue to support same sex marriage - it appears there will be some excommunications in the future. - They have now been warned. 👍

Send his Decree to your own Diocese Bishop, and ask for adoption in your own Diocese.

The Catholic Church has always condemned same-sex marriage - which is sodomy/homosexual acts.
See your “CCC 2nd Ed”.

And in the definition of marriage itself -
CCC - " 1660 The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator.
By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children.
Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament (cf. CIC, can. 1055 § 1; cf. GS 48 § 1). "

Code of Canon Law -
" Can. 1055 §1. The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring, has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized. "

It is the responsibility of each Diocese Bishop to make certain that this is well known in his Diocese.
Abp Dolan has done a good job with this Decree of Oct, 2011. He trusted Cuomo and other Catholic politicans once, and learned that trusting them was a mistake.

The CCC also has 3 paragraphs on homosexuality.
Abp Dolan never approved of the homosexual lifestyle or homosexual acts.

Why would you trust a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, living-in-sin-with-his-girlfriend politician in any way at any time?

Abp Dolan never approved of the homosexual lifestyle or homosexual acts.
That is absolutely 100% true, and I would never intimate that he approved of homosexuality. But I feel he is doing them a major disservice by not pointing out to them that they are living in direct opposition to the Law of God, and unless they repent, they could very well be on the road to hell. He should stop with the political correctness and tell it like it is. Sometimes what seems like love and compassion is only enabling.

I would not. I would have excommunicated Gov. Cuomo long ago if he continued in his sinfulness and Scandal after a private warning.
With my personal experience in working with politicians, I would have made my position very clear - clear like the Dolan Decree.
Abp Dolan is learning and appears to have learned regarding DOMA. I hope other Bishops learn as well.

Bishops are not schooled as politicians, nor do they always understand political ways of doing business. Just because politicians smile and shake your hand does not mean anything.
That is why the CCC is very clear - regarding “the Political Community and the Church”.
CCC - " 2246 It is a part of the Church’s mission “to pass moral judgments even in matters related to politics, whenever the** fundamental rights of man **or the **salvation of souls **requires it.
The means, the only means, she may use are those which are in **accord with the Gospel **and the welfare of all men according to the diversity of times and circumstances.”

Bishops are not experts in politics, financial matters, civil legal matters, etc.

Let’s give Abp Dolan credit when credit is due, and publically support him in this effort.

Again, have each of you sent the Dolan Decree to your own Diocese Bishop yet ? If not, why?

Fair enough. But I do feel the good Archbishop has closed the barn doors after the horses have already gotten out.

Mr. Cuomo is not in his diocese. New York Archdiocese is down state, so it’s Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island and some parts of Westchester.

Brooklyn and Queens make up the Diocese of Brooklyn

Mr. Cuomo is in the Diocese of Albany.

Cuomo’s residence is in Westchester County, all of which is in the Archdiocese of New York, so Achbp. Dolan does have some jurisdiction over him. And the Archdiocese actually goes all the way up to Orange County. But you’re right, it does not include Albany. And when you start talking about the Bishop in Albany, that opens up a whole 'nother can of worms.

  1. What Dolan sent out isn’t exactly surprising. Most bishops would be of the same viewpoint even if they don’t send out an official letter. No priest could claim to be so ignorant/innocent that he thought it was ok to do anything in that letter and no bishop would stand for it. When we received a similar letter from our bishop we laughed that it even “had” to be sent out.
  2. As always happens with these threads individuals demand blood: excommunicate them! However excommunication is not an easy process and it is not preferred by the Church except as an absolute means of last resort. At its heart excommunication is actually meant to call the sinner back into the church, not punish him/her. The grounds for excommunication of politicians are not nearly as clear cut as people like to think. Put simply: it ain’t gonna happen. Europe has faced similar problems for 40 years and I can’t think of any big name politicians that were excommunicated there, not even in Italy.
  3. As far as I know, Gov. Cuomo has been told to stop coming forward for communion. And that’s about as far as its going to go…
