Technically, life isn’t fair. TLC also canceled Honey Boo-boo because of sex abuse. It would be wrong to cancel one show and not the other.
Okay. Don’t know anything about Honey BooBoo. Was it a similar situation?

Could someone please concisely explain who Josh Duggar is? Does he have 19 children, or is that just the fictional plot of some tv show?

Josh Dugger is the adult son of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar who have 19 kids. Josh has kids of his own now with his wife Anna. They are a reality TV family that has aired on TLC network for many years. They are regarded as a religious family and have many fans. The name of the Show is 19 kids and counting. You can google it. They have been the subject of many events in pop culture and have appeared on the Cover of People Magazine many times and are regulars on the Today Show.

How do you figure that would work? I’m assuming that by “working on his troubles” you mean, “get them into counseling.” At least I’m hoping you mean that you’d take the responsible route and have them start seeing a licensed therapist as opposed to, “send them to a friend who needs help doing some remodeling work.” So now you’ve covered up a crime for a time but now you have your kids in counseling and they mention the abuse. The counselor is legally required to report the abuse to the authorities at which point you get investigated for the abuse that occurred in your home and the fact that you covered it up instead of reporting it. I’m guessing that’s an aspect you didn’t consider.
This is a gross misinterpretation of the police report. Jim Bob Dugger sent his son over 200 miles away so he could go through a Christian Ministry program where he believed his son received counseling and hard labor. It is possible that this was not a live-in facility and he stayed with a friend. The hard labor, I would assume from the mother’s statement, included doing grunt work for a remodeling business. He stayed there for 4 months.

There is a link to the actual redacted report in one of the previous posts. You should read it.
If they were trying to cover it up, this happened before they became famous, why would they tell friends, church elders, and take him to the State Trooper’s headquarters to talk to a State Trooper?

So, here is a question that I would like opinions on. This tragedy occurred in 2002 and 2003.
The family’s t.v. show came about because they had a large family and people were fascinated by this fact. If I remember correctly, shortly before the Duggar series came about, TLC was airing specials of different large families in the U.S. The Duggar’s show came on air in 2008.
As a result of this leak and the subsequent villification (my opinion) of the Duggars, their show has been put hiatus and may not be renewed.

Do you think this is fair to the parents and remaining children?
It’s not. But for the station it comes down to money. That’s capitalism 101. TLC is not in the business for charity.
In fact, the crew and producers who work on the show are out of work as well. I saw a woman who worked on the crew, commenting on the TLC facebook thread that basically she is in a bind because of the suddeness of it. I am sure TLC is hoping this all blows over quickly so they can go back to making money, since it was such a popular show.

Honey BooBoo dated a man who molested her daughter, and I think other children as well, unfortunately.
Honey BooBoo is the child. It was the mom who dated the guy. This guy was a child molester who went away to prison for molesting Honey Boo Boo’s older sister.
Why do I even know know this? I watch way too much TV.:o

I LOVE the fact that you know none of these people. It’s probably best.
Should probably limit my reality TV watching :D:D

Thanks, Hoosier Daddy. 🙂 I was kind of embarrassed to ask that, so thanks for the clarity and lucidity of your answer.

I like your CAF handle, by the way.👍

6. Someone leaked this record of a 13 year old, which was illegal. It violated the girls
privacy, as well as, the boys.
Nobody “leaked” anything. By the time the case was brought to the attention of the police that actually wanted to do something (presumably by Oprah’s people after receiving the letter) vs the child porn cop that Jim Bob originally took Josh to, Josh Duggar was 18 (police report dated 12/2006). The report was obtained via a Freedom of Information Act request.

Had Jim Bob not gone to a dirty cop first, Josh would have been facing felony sexual assault charges.

I don’t even watch those reality shows, and I knew about this. Shows you how pervasive this junk is. 😦

The only thing really lost by pulling their show is income, though. Income that they don’t need to survive or even to do well – I can say many critical things about Jim Bob but he’s done very well regarding caring for his family financially, even without the show. I guess I’m less inclined to think pulling it was “unfair,” specifically.

From what I know, the show hasn’t been officially cancelled. It’s been suspended and episodes have been pulled from TLC’s schedule. (BTW, did anyone notice that the very day this story broke, TLC ran a mini-marathon of the show? That was in poor taste…)

I just can’t imagine this happening. Did this FOIA happen at the federal or state level? They made it sound like they just contacted the police but there are procedures - this is one of those times when government desire to review is supposed to help people.
People keep missing the point that this has nothing to do with FOIA, it has to do with open records laws. The only thing that was released was a single redacted police report. The personal information of all juveniles was blocked out, and the current sequence of events was gleaned through simple inference.

I work with a Police Department. *Any *person at *any *time can request *any *police report, as long as they produce a fee. A juvenile’s criminal history is hidden from the public record, but individual crimes are not. Let’s take a hypothetical situation: a juvenile shoots and kills someone, and the media requests a report. The media would be presented with an incident report with all the information about the juvenile redacted. However, they would still be able to pierce together the sequence of the events from the narrative, and the non-redacted adult parties in the case.

Bottom line: you can hide information on individuals, but you can’t hide information on the crimes themselves.

I doubt it. I don’t think many 14 year olds are tried on felony assault charges for groping
their sisters . I Also think he the idea they sought a “dirty” cop to cover things up was is rather spacious in that if they wanted to cover it up they wouldn’t went the police in the first place. What He did was terrible but it appears from the story his parents didn’t ignore it , tried to get him and his sisterjs help and reported it to the police . I am curious as what people think should’ve been done to him?

I guess this explains the chaperone thing, too. Odd that the kids do most of the chaperoning rather than the parents.
Wonder what the Bates family has to say about all this?

OK I stand corrected. I worked for the environmental protection agency and handled requests at the federal level which did often involve referrals to regional offices, but nothing like criminal cases.

I’ve got to say that I never really considered their show “junk.” It was one of the only programs that I could watch with my 7-year-old without much worry regarding its content. I really do believe that some aspects of their family life are laudable. That said, I don’t know how I would go back to watching their show if it returns to the air. 😦

Um…the media *does *throw a fit if a politician does something awful…and especially if they commit a crime.
Are you not seeing any of it?

.
Yeah, I think the news tends to jump on stories like this, although of course I have no idea how many are ignored and not presented.

That’s one thing I noticed reading this thread, there were some comments saying how cases like Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Lena Dunham, and others were ignored, while this story has been getting more attention for political/social reasons. Maybe I tend to hang out in different parts of the internet than some other posters here, but I have seen huge backlash against the other 3 mentioned, and an story about them will bring out comments regarding the situations they’ve been involved in.
