This is wonderful news. God willing both sides continue to work together so that We can become reunited with our Orthodox brothers
 
I wonder how the Orthodox faithful feel about this. Do they want reunion? My impression has been that there are deeply entrenched anti-Roman feelings in the Eastern Orthodox.

Orthodox Christians generally want reunion but not before the Catholic Church revert to the Orthodox Faith as taught in the Canons of the 7 Ecumenical Councils. For me personally, I think we ought not encourage a false union, by that I mean, a partaking in a common Holy Communion without fully being united in all theological issues. I think uniting falsehood with Truth does Not glorify Jesus Christ our God. I think that Catholics would agree in that unblemished Truth is more important than union?

From the Orthodox perspective, the Catholic Church has greatly overstepped the bounds of authority by proclaiming as dogma things that are not Apostolic. I understand the Catholic perspective is that those dogmas Are Apostolic.

Why is it you ask what is not asked of you…no one asks the Orthodox to accept anything that was not accepted at the time of the split…yet you ask Rome to revert…rather one sided approach that precludes union…

That’s very interesting. I need to learn more about the Orthodox Faith and the theological issues that separate the eastern & western church. Would the Eastern Catholicism Forum be the right place to start? Do you have any other suggestions?

I greatly admire Patriarch Bartholomew for making such a magnanimous gesture towards friendly relations with the Latin Church by attending the installation ceremony for Pope Francis. I think it is wonderful!

One of the biggest issues is that the canons are dierfferent. The Ordthodox have books not in the Catholic canon and visa versa.

Basically, the Orthodox believe they are the true faith, handed down by Christ to the Apostles. I’m surprised that some posters here expressed surprise that the Orthodox would say that we need to revert to Orthodoxy. In their minds, us Catholics changed the faith, not them.

In some Orthodox circles, the Eastern Catholics pose more of a problem to reunification. I am certainly thrilled with this outreach from the Ecumenical Patriarch though. May we one day be one.

I would find it strange if the Orthodox didn’t believe they are the true faith. 🙂

It does seem like the western church was more open to innovation over the years. I can see how this would seem like a break from tradition.

I am confused. Is there less unity within the Orthodox than within the RCC?

That’s hardly true. The canon is an issue but not a major one, and definitely not “one of the biggest”. There are far more significant disagreements especially regarding the procession of the Holy Spirit, the ecclesiastical role of the Bishop of Rome and divergent spiritual and liturgical traditions. Even within the Orthodox Church there are variations on what is considered canon. This has not prevented them from being in full and meaningful communion with each other.

I don’t know how well-read you are regarding Catholicism or Orthodoxy, but I should advise you not to make the Western mistake of confusing traditional churches with modern Protestants. With regard to both the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic churches, Bible is a holy and important tenet of the faith, but it is not the sole definition of the Church. 🙂

You should not be surprised that there are anti-ecumenicist views within the Orthodox Church. We do not need to look far to find similar struggles. There are many who believe that the Catholic Church should not attempt ecumenical dialogue with the Orthodox Church as they believe that because the Orthodox Church is the one that is in error, the Orthodox Church should be the one initiating dialogue to return to the One True Faith that is the Catholic Church, rather than the other way around. In their eyes, ecumenism amounts to a dilution of the righteousness of our faith simply for the sake of superficial unity.

Substitute “Catholic” for “Orthodox” and “Orthodox” for “Catholic” and you basically have your answer. 🙂
