The ceaseless attacks on Pope Benedict XVI over the last few weeks form the most recent scene in this historical drama. Unlike Napoleon, today’s forces of secularization can’t imprison a pope. Well, at least not yet; Christopher Hitchens is working on this, calling for the European Union to seize Benedict’s traveling papers. But they can strangle him politically and culturally. That his popularity poll numbers have apparently dipped below those of the most inane and rancid celebrities testifies to this perverse power.

The enemies of Christ have begun to sharpen their knives in earnest. We must wear out our kneelers and rosary beads in prayer to oppose this.

Satan is a tempter and destroyer, but how much of this is caused by reaping what was sowed previously…The shuffling and on going concealment cannot be dismissed…Doesn’t the need for ongoing damage control warrant the church to come clean, discipline those who accept it and clean house of all who refuse to change…

I don’t want to derail the thread, but perhaps you should direct your comments about “cleaning house” to the abuse in protestant churches. The Catholic Church IS “cleaning house”, and in the meantime, abuse by other churches continues. Note how recent these charges are, while the charges against Pope Benedict are 30 years old.

Never denied the issue…Sad it is the body of Christ as a whole…Their conviction rate is twice as high…It is usually exposed and dealt with rather than being shuffled and covered long term…That’s the reason the fires keep popping up and the church has to constantly do damage control…The letters to Corinth give us guidelines…We, as individual believers are even to live above reproach and harmless as doves…How much more so is the leadership to set the example…We are not even to keep company with those who call themselves “brother” who continually get drunk, live immorally and lie/decieve ect…

Subject: Proud to be Catholic!!

Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman - NOT Catholic.

Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States , namely the Catholic Church?
Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%.
The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students.
The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people ˆ not just Catholics - in the United States today
But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage.
Let me give you some figures that Catholics should know and remember. For example, 12% of the 300 Protestant clergy surveyed admitted to sexual intercourse with a parishioner; 38% acknowledged other inappropriate sexual contact in a study by the United Methodist Church , 41.8% of clergy women reported unwanted sexual behavior; 17% of laywomen have been sexually harassed. Meanwhile, 1.7% of the Catholic clergy has been found guilty of pedophilia. 10% of the Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia. This is not a Catholic Problem.
A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving.
The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now.
Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non-governmental agency in the United States .
Then remember what Jeremiah said: ‘Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls’. Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be proud that you’re a Catholic.

I found the source:InForum Blog by Sheila Liaugminas:

Church, Culture, Media, Society Add commentsJewish businessman Sam Miller first wrote an article smacking down media bias against the Catholic Church in June 2008. He originally wrote it for the Cleveland Diocese’s ‘Buckeye Bulletin’. It has suddenly started circulating again, and seems more timely now than ever.

I received it in pdf form in emails. Here’s a blog that ran it in 2008, and it’s interesting that the comments section generated activity then, and has picked up more now.

Maybe it’s easier for me to say because I am not Catholic, but I have had enough, more than enough, disgustingly enough.

During my entire life I’ve never seen a greater vindictive, more scurrilous, biased campaign against the Catholic Church as I have seen in the last 18 months, and the strangest thing is that it is in a country like the United States where there is supposed to be mutual respect and freedom for all religions.

He recalls that he has shared the pain of stigma in America with immigrant Catholics who were Irish, Italians, Poles, Latvians and Lithuanians, among others.

This prejudice against your religion and mine has never left this country and don’t ever forget it, and (sic) never will. Your people were called Papists, Waps, Guineas, frogs, fish eaters, ad infinitum…

There is a concentrated effort by the media today to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. You don’t find it this bad overseas at all. They have now blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, which is as irresponsible as blaming adultery on the institution of marriage. You and me have been living in a false paradise. Wake up and recognize that many people don’t like Catholics. What are these people trying to accomplish?

Good and incisive question.

Just what are these Kangaroo journalists trying to accomplish? Think about it. If you get the New York Times day’ ,after day; the Los Angeles Times day after day, our own paper day after day…looking at the record, some of these writers are apostates, Catholics or ex-Catholics who have been denied something they wanted from the Church and are on a mission of vengeance.

Why would newspapers carry on this vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church?

Miller cites figures on Catholic education, health systems, institutions that sesrve the public in far greater proportion than is ever credited. What gets cited….mainly by the discredited New York Times….is any example of misconduct they can dredge up. And because an institution like the Catholic Church stands so publicly for moral values, they are held to the interpretation of that standard by cultural arbiters of values that happen to move the goalposts and redefine what constitutes morality, without being held to account themselves for upholding standards.

Miller, the Jewish businessman, is despondent over the attacks on the Catholic Church.

I never thought in my life I would ever see these things.

Walk with your shoulders high and your head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non governmental agency today in the United States. what do you consider “a small number”?

I see a lot of hate floating around in here for the press, especially considering that the press didn’t molest those girls and boys. It sucks, if you’re catholic, that the world gets to look at your shame. But, the church is completely at fault in these situations, or at the very least the messengers within it. So instead of focusing on how the press treats you unfairly, and the “enemies” of Christ/Satan, maybe people should worry about matters at home and set some other priorities. WWJD? Probably not complain that others were judging him or his Father.

I do admit perhaps a derision from others when speaking of becoming a priest, namely half-serious remarks like “just remember not to molest little boys,” even from other Catholics. People seem to be beginning to assume that all priests are homoerotic pedophiles and view clerical celibacy as a bad institution.

I’m not arguing with your point, but I would like to see a source for these statistics, particularly that 10% of Protestant ministers have been found guilty of pedophilia…

It’s a pretty bold statement to blame all of child pedophilia on the Catholic priesthood when a study done by the US Department of Education reported that children are 100 times more likely to be sexually assaulted by a public school teacher than a Catholic priest.

The Church deserves to be pilloried but it shouldn’t be the whipping boy for all these hebephiliac and pedophiliac sins that exist everywhere especially in the Family.I grow weary of the glee and schadenfreude exhibited by the enemies of the Church for who HATE Her for the Truth she preaches on abortion,so-called same sex marriage, pornography etc.ONE incidence in the Church is TOO MANY.I could cheerily throttle and imprison for life these homosexual ephebophiliac predators who masquerade as priests.I hope they undergo at least a spiritual auto de fe for the gaping fly infested wound they have made in the Body of Christ.I sent an email to the Holy Father requesting that he set the Dominicans loose and institute an internal Inquisition so that this FILTH can never polute the Body of Christ again.
Christ had His Judas Iscariot and we have ours.

Going to Baptist Watch, JW Watch, and Catholic League do not provide me with any proof of the 10% statistic. I googled it and found numerous places that said the 10% of Protestant minsters “statistic” is falsified. Please link me to an actual study or factual source for that figure. The Catholic League article I read said that one survey shows thaqt 10% of ministers have been involved in sexual misconduct** and 2 or 3 percent are pedophiles. Sexual misconduct can mean any thing from making inappropriate comments to another adult to premarital sex with a church member to adultery to whatever. The article said 2 or 3 percent according to this studey are pedophiles. Those figures are a long way from your statement that 10% of protestant ministers have been “found guilty of pedophilia”. Again I’m not saying that the Catholic Church is any more guilty than Protestant churches, but I don’t think we’re any less guilty either. I think a certain percentage of the population are pedophiles, and that spreads through every denomination, every profession, and every community pretty equally.

From the Catholic League:

catholicleague.net/research/pedophiles_and_priests.htm:

Notwithstanding the difficulties that such data comparisons hold, the available information on clergy sexual misconduct shows that the problem is bigger among Protestant clergy. For example, the most cited survey of sexual problems among the Protestant clergy shows that 10 percent have been involved in sexual misconduct and “about two or three percent” are “pedophiles.” With regard to the “pedophile” problem, the figure for the Catholic clergy, drawn from the most authoritative studies, ranges between .2 percent to 1.7 percent. Yet we hear precious little about these comparative statistics

Yes…and if necessary, defend ourselves and our Church with force…Church Militant!!!

this would not be the first time. few years back i remember of a story about the european court being demanded by some irrational people to bring the pope to trial about some non sense. as i recal the court refrain from doing so.

what we are going through today is a result of our own sins. we have wondered too far from God and now we are suffering the consequences.

ONE incidence in the Church is TOO MANY.
Quoted for the truth.

Having said that, I wish a degree of this sort of attention had been brought upon the Church earlier. Think of how many victims could have been spared had swifter action been taken earlier. I am glad to see programs like VIRTUS training as a regular part of the Church’s process for volunteers – if only PUBLIC schools and other institutions would follow suit.

The bottom line is that this sort of abuse NEEDS TO STOP and needs to be stopped everywhere. As a father of two young kids, one of which is a girl who faces very poor odds of getting to adulthood unscathed by sexual abuse (!!!), I am concerned with this across the spectrum of locales that kids frequent.

There is NO excuse for this in the Church especially, but there is no excuse for it ANYWHERE and with that, the world would only benefit if the sort of unbalanced attention and energies spent on the Church on this were also directed to as many child focused institutions as possible so everyone was on their watch about this and the people who perpetrate these crimes could be weeded out and thrown in jail where they belong!

The statement of 10% was NOT my figure. It happened to be in an article that i was quoting.I however DID quote it so accept any blame for any overstatement or inaccuracies.I agree that 10% for pedophilia in non-Catholic Christianity is hyperbolic and probably absurd. But it DOES exist.
