If it were impossible for a Pope to appoint the wrong man as archbishop of San Francisco (or any other city), then the Holy Spirit would never have inspired the Apostle Paul to write the following to an early Catholic bishop in 1 Tim 5:22:

"Do not lay hands too readily on anyone, and do not share in another’s sins."

Paul is warning Timothy not to ordain (“lay hands on”) unsuitable candidates to the episcopate and the priesthood.

Let’s face the reality of what’s happening in the human elements of the Church today.

Keep and spread the Faith.

Well…it’s certainly not impossible…but I would just point out that Abp. Niedauer’s views have not changed since he was in Salt Lake…so if he held these beliefs in Salt Lake…why did the Holy Father move him to a more high profile see?

Again…could it be…that after all is said and done we have a Pope who wants his brother bishops to be offering the positive about catholicism and not the negativity that often flows from the know it alls on this board?

Why do I get the feeling you’re trying to desperately make your case? You still haven’t.

There’s nothing desperate about my case…it’s just a simple form of logic.

I can provide pictures with Babar the elephant or something if that makes it easier I suppose…

I’m just saying that if

(A) A bishop is well known for his views (for example Abp Niedauer was one of the few prelates to see Brokeback Mountain and wrote about it)

(B) That bishop is not rebuked for said views, but is given what most would say is ‘greater responsibility’.

(C) That bishop replaced someone who is quite close with the Pope…so close that he probably had great influence on the choice

(D) The pope did not balk at any of this and made the man shepherd and pastor of a very diverse diocese knowing that he was not going to start excommunicating people the day after his installation

(E) Other pastoral appointments since that time seem to follow in the same mold of this one.

It’s not something that is desperate, it’s an observation that I believe is correct.

Only in the fignation of your imagination.

Everything I said there is factual…you may disagree with my conclusion…but it would be good if you actually said why rather than using made up words about my minds ability to halucinate.

Ah, but yet he keeps condemning moral relativism, modernism and all that. How are you even to think that the currect pope disagrees with Cardinal Ratzinger? Laughable arguments to say the least.

Wow…talk about taking things just a little out of context and running with them…

Maybe JUST maybe…the problems you have with certain bishops aren’t transgressions against this doctrine of moral relativism that you speak of so fondly.

And maybe you’re still ticked that the pope hasn’t kicked me out of the church yet.

Amazing how you can run away with statements like that is this Bishop and think that the Pope automatically has changed his opinions. You’re not expert in the Church so don’t pretend to be.

As far as Abp. Burke…I could care less if he were named a ‘cardinal’…that’s about as significant as being named ‘monsignor’.
Cardinals choose the pope, so they do have a distinct function apart from others, but a monsignor has no distinct function as far as I know. I do not care whether or not Abp. Burke is named a cardinal- I just hope he and Bishop Finn stay where they are.

I know I have better credentials that you do as far as understanding the church.

I dont think you have much to worry about during this pontificate
