Guess what? You can learn about centipedes in this series. A whole bunch of them were under the girl’s pillow. She threw one up. It was big.

Kind of wondered what centipedes have to do with demons, except that centipedes are so ugly, I think they are demons in disguise.

Well then you missed the goofiest part. All the possessed people extracting organs from about a dozen people in the same neighborhood and then some hint about the pope coming.

I think I’m done.
Went on to watch the first two episodes. Pretty bad.

While the family’s “demonic oppression” is ok with me I guess, I think the main problem I have with the TV series are the two priests, the old guy particularly, and the young one as well.

In the movie Exorcist, Father Merrin is a saintly figure, and sacrifices himself in battle against the demon out of love. Even in everyday dealings with ordinary people, this love is apparent and genuine (kudos to Max Von Sydow). Father Karras is the priest struggling with his faith, which is something most of us can empathize with at some point in our life.

In the TV series the old priest is some wackjob who pulls guns on other priests and insults his fellow clergy. And he was tossed in a dungeon with a demon as a boy for exorcist training (absurd). The young priest is having a borderline extramarital affair and tells angsty teenage girls to keep their “damn hands” to themselves. To get to the point…they’re both kind of losers that are hard to like, let alone empathize with. No, I don’t expect priests to be perfect, but for a show titled “the Exorcist” we have to believe they at least have the virtue to withstand the demonic than us ordinary folk.

And now they’re tossing in this gang of demon-possessed/satan-worshipper serial killers harvesting body organs? They can’t even make the exorcists’ storyline any good, and they’re adding more convoluted garbage?

Maybe I’m judging too early, but it’s looking pretty bad. I’ll follow the thread to see if it gets better, but…I think I’m most definitely done for now.

Well I watched again last night. 🤷

What caught my attention is how the devil seduces the young girl even though he looks old and unattractive. He plays her and tells her what she want to hear. He manipulates her much like human traffickers do with vulnerable people, especially naive young girls.

At one point she is on a subway and she gets harassed by a guy. Isn’t that the work of the devil also? Well the demon in her rips him to shreds. Reminded me of the movie “Carrie”.

I guess I am still watching because it is one of the few that is overtly religious and involves the Catholic Church. I want to see what it is putting out there no matter how low brow.

:rotfl:

I think I’m sitting out until the actual exorcism. I already re-watched the first movie to wash my brain of the TV series.
Good ol Fr. Merrin. The were two sequels after that. Poor Lind Blair.

There are better exorcism docs and films on Netflix to watch… This show is pure junk.

Tonight an exorcist nun who casts out demons through love and the help of the Virgin Mary. A more “feminine” approach".

Nuns can be given the authority for that?

…is the show getting…better? :hmmm:

A Bishop can give faculties to a nun or a lay person. It almost never happens and likely only occurs when no priest is available in the area.

It seems to be more a charismatic gift than official faculty.

Getting better? No, but an interesting twist. I like this nun. And in full habit.

No they cannot. (see Canon Law).

Unless the Bishop is the Bishop of Rome (who can change Canon Law).

From what I saw - rather a lack of understanding of the Church and of exorcism etc.

Nothing to write home about.

No. Nuns cannot preform the rite. There are other “excorsisms” that others can do. Probably similar to the st Michael prayer… Though this would not be an “excorsism” in the full rite.

That is my understanding.

You are correct about Canon Law. I read that in a special circumstance, such as when there is no priest, faculties may be given to a lay person who can then pray with the full authority of the church.

An example would be a lay missionary in an area without priests.

Maybe I’m wrong.

Since you read that, and you are proposing it, perhaps you could cite your source.

I would have cited the source if I could. I don’t remember where it came from. I did a quick search and couldn’t find anything. Sorry.

Yeah, because it isn’t true. You know what is true? Canon law.

Hmmm. Are you being hostile? I know that Canon Law is true. There is not a need to tell me. I had already admitted that I might be wrong.

I think that we all know that laws, even Canon Laws, can be deviated in unusual circumstances. No law encompasses every situation that may possibly arise.

I don’t see it as a critical point unless one is trying to prepare for encountering a possessed individual while on an Antarctic excursion. I will not spend any time researching.

It was your assertion. It’s false. We can move on.

It was not the Rite so much as it was the Litany of Loreto and the charism of this Sister. In fact she told the defrocked priest that it is God who cast out demons not the “man”. I am not sure of what she said exactly about that.
