Anyone else catch this? I stumbled upon the last half hour. I did not see enough yet to know what to think of it. Of course it is creepy and dramatic with special effects. The young priest seems reasonable. Older priest reluctant to get involved and seems angry or frustrated with God. The demon or demons seem to be playing with the priest,

Of course the theme song is from the original movie. I remember seeing it when I was in college and it sobered me up a bit and got me going to church again. Maybe this will have the same effect on those who watch it.

I recorded it. I’ll give it a chance but I know not to expect good things from secular entertainment when it comes to Catholic things.

If the devil’s greatest trick is to convince people that he doesn’t exist, why would he elect to manifest himself or to have other demons manifest themselves in such an yoo-hoo-here-I-am kind of way?

Also, I don’t want to start a thread just on that, but does Satan know my name, past, weaknesses, wounds, vices of choice etc.? Reason I’m asking is that when I hear certain priests , apologists or pope Francis talk about Satan, it’s as if he’s this near equivalent of God, but in darkness and evil. does Satan have the gift of ubiquity and does he have some form of omniscience, but not quite, whereby he’d be able to tempt me to kill myself, while at the exact same moment tempting hundreds of people halfway across the world from each other to commit specific, tailor-made sins? I personally think the demons’ power lies in their numbers, Satan can’t be the only one appointed by God to lead us away from Him and into eternal damnation. And odd that demons would not serve God but seem to serve Satan as loyal and faithful servants. Just odd.

Satan is not nearly equivalent to God. He has never created. He does not know our thoughts. God limits his actions.

Time does not exist for spiritual creatures. Yes, he knows our pasts because he exists outside of time. Tempting multiple people at the same “time” is within his purview for the same reason.

Demons do not exhibit virtues such as loyalty and faithfulness. They live tortured existences, always under the threat of punishment from superior demons.

I liked it. The young priest later starts to believe in demons; by the end the show makes it really clear demons exist.

Many Catholic priests today (especially those in their 50s and 60s) are very reluctant to talk about demons and will indeed attribute supernatural evil to scientific and psychological reasons. So the fact that the priest didn’t believe in demons (or at least that is what he told his parishoner-and I bet the majority of priests you would drop in on and bring up the subject to would respond the same) seemed accurate to me.

Pronouns are the bane of language. I meant that God is the creator of all things and Satan has never created a thing.

Yes it is par for tv wasteland. I will probably watch another episode. The “way over the top” comment is probably accurate but who of us would know. The one scene in the attic could have been all in the priest’s mind.

Ok, I went and saw the first half hour. Renegade priest draws gun on big bad representative of Big bad Rome. I guess that is to be expected. Naturally the young priest is hands on and has history of infidelity. I like Gena Davis though.

it would be good if they could consult with an actual exorcist, like Fr Gary Thomas for the movie The Rite. I did not watch this opening series…I prefer to read comments by priests exorcists and forums before I do …haha…actually I just missed it being on.

I’d be skeptical of any portrayals of the catholic church on tv nowdays as liberally biased as they all seem to be.

Ok, after last night we. Are getting pretty close to cartoonish. Too bad. It is a subject worth dealing with in our world with mass shootings, random bombings, mental illness and drug addiction.

That was my thought too…until I saw how the young boys were being recruited for exorcist duty. This is the stuff of Hollywood horror flicks and any relation to reality is purely accidental. I turned it off.

Watched for about 20 minutes and was bored to tears with this show. Not scary, too much CGI, and I think they’re slightly mocking the concept of exorcism itself.

Well then you missed the goofiest part. All the possessed people extracting organs from about a dozen people in the same neighborhood and then some hint about the pope coming.
