Certainly it looks like Francis has kept himself in good shape, but he has a chunk of one lung missing from childhood (tuberculosis, I think) and sciatica.
I had heard it had something to do with the chemistry, but I see you’re right! You learn something new everyday around here.

I was thinking about how Jesus chose Peter even with his imperfections and failings. Can you imagine the headlines if Peter was the Pope today?
My research leads me to believe that St. Peter will in fact be the next and last Pope.
It’s too bad that I am not allowed to tell you why. That’s life on the Forum.

Philly seems to have lost its red cap, unless Pope Francis is simply skipping over Archbishop Chaput
I doubt Pope Francis is in a hurry to cardinalize Archbishop Chaput.
I don’t agree with Chaput on everything, but he’d be a great Cardinal and Philly is a Catholic stronghold for sure.

He’s an Argentine, “American” by itself refers to those of us in the United States,
Well, within the United States, it does. Not so much in every corner of the Americas. (The name America was first applied to the southern land mass of the Western Hemisphere, not the northern, in any event.)

If this were to turn into an argument over who has the best bishop, I would stand up for mine, against anyone except Peter Sartain. (regional pride vs. family pride). We do have some great Cardinal’s in the U.S.

What goes into making someone a great Cardinal, and what do you think Abp Chaput could do as cardinal that he can’t do now?
It’s an honor conferred on the best Archbishops. I think he does a good job managing the diocese.
As Cardinal, he could vote for Pope and be the first Native American Cardinal.

i agree; a Pope from the USA is unlikely for the foreseeable future

but if (when) he is elected, he should take the name “George”

for St George and General Washington 🙂

I’m afraid calling yourself Pope George would cause some to think in terms of xenophobia and fascism these days. Poor old St. George did not deserve that.

I think we need a Pope Anthony. Have we had a Pope Anthony yet?

Or maybe a Pope Patrick…

For an American, how about Pope Donald the Great? Would help further good relations with the United States

I think one needs to look at what kind of men are being made cardinals to have a better idea of which way the Church is going when it comes to future popes. I see one coming from Africa before coming from the USA.

But it also depends on, overall, what is going on in the Church as a whole, and the world as a whole.
