If I said that having Cardinal Sarah might make a good pope will I get flagged? Maybe the next pope should be from North Korea.

DoubtfulI’m calling it now
The first American pope will be from the Archdiocese of Lincoln
He would actually be a very possible candidate if he becomes and Archbishop & Cardinal. I think of all the American Bishops, he’s the one (with Cardinal O’Malley a distant 2nd) who would have the best chance of being elected.Bishop Robert Barron !
Yes, but odds are still not in their favor.A strong, orthodox diocese producing wayyy more priests per capita than nearly anywhere else in the us
I’d agree with this. Electing someone who isn’t in the conclave brings up the possibility that they’ll decline.I don’t see the Cardinals electing a non-Cardinal as Pope anytime soon.
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)I mean USA, but I get where you’re coming from haha
Popes from influential and prosperous countries have been elected before.I don’t think there will be a Pope elected from the USA until the USA declines drastically in her political position in the secular sphere.
I don’t really think that’s the main reason.Take it how you will, but I don’t think there will be a Pope elected from the USA until the USA declines drastically in her political position in the secular sphere.
There are so many reasons, it is hard to count them all. We shouldn’t fool ourselves about that.I don’t really think that’s the main reason.
Cardinals worldwide have been against the idea of an American Pope since the 1800s
What scares most worldwide Bishops about and American Pope is American values are anti-Catholic in many ways.
They also don’t like the financial power the American Catholics have, and fear further Americanizing the Church. One Americanism has already happened with the national bishop conferences (which was created by Americans in the 1800s, and used as the template for the national bishop conferences after Vatican II). Some bishops around the world still don’t like the bishop conferences.
They also fear that American Catholics all fall into one of two camps:
Americanist Heretics
“fundamentalists Catholics” influenced by American Protestantism.
Very true, very true indeed. But most of the reasons go back over 100 yearsphil19034:![]()

Until John Paul was elected, it was all Italians elected as Pope for a long time.Cardinals worldwide have been against the idea of an American Pope since the 1800s

Popes are the bishop of an Italian diocese and for a long time were a secular ruler of a large Italian state.
Really? They also fear that American Catholics all fall into one of two camps:
Americanist Heretics
“fundamentalists Catholics” influenced by American Protestantism.
