Pope Francis doesn’t seem to care about “red cap” cities. If he did +Gomez would be a Cardinal… come on, a flock of 5 million and they don’t get a Cardinal?
+Francis appointed a Haitian bishop Cardinal over and above his metropolitan… and in San Salvador the AUXILIARY bishop is a Cardinal while the archbishop isn’t.

Point is, with +Francis, any bishop could be made a Cardinal… he just needs to like you ;).

Pope Francis is the first American Pope… And a great one at that!

Just my opinion:

There will NEVER be a Pope from the U.S. or Ireland.

(But I’ve been wrong before.) 😬

😂😂😂😂

Ohhhh rad trads where would we be without you

My prediction is that next Pope will be non-white, most likely African, and will take the name Leo XIV.

I can see that as well.

However, Leo xvi was my papal name, which is a bummer

The current pope is hispanic, which counts as “non white” by pollsters and Affirmative Action officers in this country. So you see “no change” on this

Yes, but see what would happen in Argentina if you made that claim. In a country that strongly emphasizes its ties to historic Europe, such a claim would by seen by many as offensive.

Actually, he’s ethnically Italian, which is white.

Additionally, Argentina is pretty heavily non-hispanic - there are a lot of European immigrants there

Ahh yess the classic thread-crosser.

We have a thread on this, but I suspect you already know this.

Maybe to you my friend…, not to many, many others on the American continents.

The first Pope had a beard; I predict the next one will, too: +Seán Cardinal O’Malley. With Cardinal Pell about to go on trial, the abuse crisis continues to reflexively dominate headlines. Cardinal O’Malley’s track record includes postings to definitively clean up every diocese he’s headed. Member of the C9 panel of cardinals. Speaks all the needed languages, including Italian, and Spanish, among others. It could be argued that his election could re-energize the American church, which is why I don’t think the traditional anti-American bias has the same hold. The US doesn’t bestride the world as a “colossus” as it once did. There seems to be some feeling that Pope Francis’ attempts to clean up the Curia haven’t been effective; perhaps the spectre of “American efficiency” might appeal. Lots of reasons.

There is no requirement to be a Cardinal to be a Pope…any baptized male can become pope, although first must be ordained as a Bishop (the Bishop of Rome).
