The first Mass after the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Jesus conducted the first Mass. He states in Luke 24:27 beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, In the Mass today we call this the liturgy of the Word, Then his priest in persona christi, explains how all these referred to Jesus in all the scriptures. Followed by the breaking of the bread, The liturgy of the Eucharist today celebrated in the Mass.

My question is What happened to Jesus after his disciples recongized Jesus in the (Mass) breaking of the bread, does any one know? here is the scripture, please read and give us your take about this revelation.

13
5 6 Now that very day two of them were going to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
14
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
15
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
16
7 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
17
He asked them, “What are you discussing as you walk along?” They stopped, looking downcast.
18
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?”
19
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?” They said to him, “The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,
20
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over to a sentence of death and crucified him.
21
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel; and besides all this, it is now the third day since this took place.
22
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning
23
and did not find his body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive.
24
Then some of those with us went to the tomb and found things just as the women had described, but him they did not see.”
25
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
26
Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer 8 these things and enter into his glory?”
27
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.
28
As they approached the village to which they were going, he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
29
But they urged him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
30
And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.
31
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.
32
Then they said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning (within us) while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?”
33
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem where they found gathered together the eleven and those with them
34
who were saying, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
35
Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
36
9 While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
37
But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.
38
Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts?
39
10 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”
40
And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41
While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?”
42
They gave him a piece of baked fish;
43
he took it and ate it in front of them.
44
He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.”
45
Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.
46
11 And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day
47
and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48
You are witnesses of these things.
49
And (behold) I am sending the promise of my Father 12 upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
50
13 Then he led them (out) as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.
51
As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.
52
They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53
and they were continually in the temple praising God. 14

as the scripture clearly states, when they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, He disappeared from their sight, and in due course after appearing to hundreds of the disciples, ascended to heaven, and fulfills his promise to remain with us always in the Eucharist and the other sacraments.

I think it’s pretty clear that Jesus walked away vanishing from their site. The question is was it instantaneous? We see this type of language used constantly in John especially when the Jews were ready to stone HIM. It always appears from the language that he somehow disappears from them. Perhaps you are trying to read too much into it. Jesus was obviously making appearances to give testimony of his resurrection. But also notice in these verses he prevented them from recognizing HIM. Then allowed them to recognize HIM after breaking bread. Perhaps he prevented their eyes from seeing HIM physically when he walked away.

I think the bigger message here is that once HE blessed, broke, and gave them the bread they recognized HIM immediately. This is why the Lord’s supper is such an integral part of our faith. It’s that spiritual feeding that we get that allows us to see Jesus and proclaim HIM as our savior. IMHO of course.

Well, at Mass today after receiving the Eucharist we go back to our pews and pray for a short time, and then we are sent on our way “to love and serve the Lord”.

Seems at the First Mass after the Resurrection, it happened in much the same way as it does today, as the disciples “did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem in joy.”

That makes alot of sense, thats why the Mass, Este, Misa, est= “To be sent”

Clearly,Jesus went into the bread.
So in his vanishing Jesus, The bread and wine (Eucharist) became the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus Christ by his words.

Colossians 2:9…
9
For in him dwells the whole fullness of the deity, bodily,
10
and you share in this fullness in him, who is the head of every principality and power.
12
You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.
13
And even when you were dead (in) transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions;

as the scripture clearly states, when they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread, He disappeared from their sight, and in due course after appearing to hundreds of the disciples, ascended to heaven, and fulfills his promise to remain with us always in the Eucharist and the other sacraments.
So because of this God dwells in the hearts and minds of men, always.

Revelations 22:16-17

“I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, 10 the bright morning star.”
17
The Spirit and the bride 11 say, “Come.” Let the hearer say, “Come.” Let the one who thirsts come forward, and the one who wants it receive the gift of life-giving water.

Revelations 2:17

**You really think Jesus walked away from their sight in the breaking of bread? I follow your examples from other scriptures yes this is true when he walked the earth in his humanity, but on the road to Emmaus scene he is in his Glorified Resurrected body, would Jesus have to walk away in order to vanish? **

So you’re saying these things are of the Spirit which I agree with you 100% but what about those who think the spirit is symbolically, speaking in the breaking of bread? Would one be considered as looking at this scene from scripture as viewing it in the flesh, if they dont believe in the real presence?

Romans 8:5-11
5
For those who live according to the flesh are concerned with the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the spirit with the things of the spirit.
6
The concern of the flesh is death, but the concern of the spirit is life and peace.
7
For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it;
8
and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9
But you are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
10
But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
11
If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you.

So was this a mass or the breaking of bread and eating of a meal after a journey?
Were the first Lords Suppers meals or masses?
Scripture seems plain to me.

Clearly,Jesus went into the bread.
No, we are not told that. At the last supper Jesus blessed and broke the bread and said it was his body. We are not told that he did this after the resurrection at any time. Only later, as he had commanded them, the apostles did it.

However, this does foreshadow the future eucharists.

It seems plain to me too, but I think we disagree. Good thing we have the church so we know what is true when two of us disagree!

The structure of the earliest liturgies seems that they went to the temple for the services and then to a home for a meal which ended in the eucharist. But later the Jewish Christians changed this because were not admitted into the temple. This couldn’t have continued anyway because of the gentiles coming into the church. In Acts, we see that they listened to scripture readings and preaching (long enough for someone to doze off and fall off the window sill) followed by the ‘breaking of the bread’. Looking back, we would say these were the first celebrations of the Lord’s Supper or Mass or Divine Liturgy which were words that were later used to describe this.

For me, it is what Jesus wants done in his church from this point on. To interpret and reveal him in the Law and the prophets to his church,The bride of Christ, so that he can be made present before his believers in the Eucharist, “thus I will be with you always”. This also reminds me of a wedding celebration a meal takes place, and the consumation between the bride and the groom, when both reveal each other to one another, (the veil lifted) and both become one, as in marriage, for the bride consumes her groom in the revelation of each other, and the groom is in the bride.

But why the vanishing?

At the original Lords supper it was the institution of the Mass by Jesus himself, in the Resurrection it is the first Mass revealed by Jesus, and this structure is still present in the Mass today.

Iam confused by your statement? what do you mean we are not told that he did this after the resurrection at any time? Did you read Luke 24:30-31? Why did Jesus vanish?

Well let me ask you this. To me real presence implies spirit. That’s why Jesus says the flesh means nothing. What is it to you?? The bread and wine are the elements if you will that Jesus is using to feed us spiritually. This is how we constantly profess our Faith outwardly.

Gabriel keep this in mind. Paul tells us in Romans not to live in the flesh because the flesh is sinful. Instead live in the spirit and align yourself with Jesus. Does that mean we won’t ever sin? Of course not we sure will. That’s why Jesus is our only means of salvation because he paid the price for the sin.

In the verses here Paul is saying this very thing. That living in the flesh means to live in sin. Living in the Spirit means accepting Jesus and having HIS Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Having the Holy Spirit living in you gives eternal life to our mortal bodies.

Well let me ask you this. To me real presence implies spirit. That’s why Jesus says the flesh means nothing. What is it to you??

You are referring to John 6:63 It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail. I agree scripture does intend to refer the flesh to sin, but not in this context it is not referring to sin. I believe were we differ in our interpretations is with the understanding of the word Spirit. Spirit to my knowledge is no where in scripture to mean symbolic, Spirit is of the eternal permanent realities, the flesh or natural man, is of the temporal reality that is close to disappearing.

The following scripture pertains to my point about the Spirit that Jesus is referring to.

1Corinthians 2:9 and following 9 But as it is written: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,”
10 this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
11 Among human beings, who knows what pertains to a person except the spirit of the person that is within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God.
12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.
13 And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms. 7
14 Now the natural person 8 does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually.
15 The spiritual person, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment 9 by anyone.
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

The bread and wine are the elements if you will that Jesus is using to feed us spiritually. This is how we constantly profess our Faith outwardly.

**Remember we are called to have faith in Jesus. And this faith in the Eucharist is how it is practiced by the following scriptures; Hebrews 11:1 Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.
2 Because of it the ancients were well attested.
3 By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible. **
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him, for anyone who approaches God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Remember in John 6:66 “As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him” These disciples that left Jesus after his bread of life discourse, could not believe his saying literally that is why they left him, and Jesus knew that is why he says those who believe in his Eucharist, are of the Spirit, and those that dont walk away because they belive from the flesh which is of no avail.

Oh I will keep that in mind, that is why I obey Jesus words to eat his flesh and drink his blood.

In the verses here Paul is saying this very thing. That living in the flesh means to live in sin. Living in the Spirit means accepting Jesus and having HIS Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Having the Holy Spirit living in you gives eternal life to our mortal bodies.

**I dont disagree with your point, I dont think it pertains to the topic at hand though. I dont think the Holy Spirit is going to lie to all those christians that went to their death proclaiming Jesus body, blood, soul, divinity in the Eucharist since the first century.

Peace be with you**

I was never implying that the Spirit lied or would lie. I believe the Spirit knows what’s in our hearts and whether or not Jesus is truly in our hearts.

I think this ties very well to John because Jesus is continually asking the Jews to believe in HIM using the bread of life analogy. Then he contrasts this with the bread that their ancestors ate in the wilderness but still died. So Jesus is making the point that eating physical bread is not what saves us and gives us eternal life but feeding on HIS Spirit does. How do we feed on HIS Spirit? We don’t eat HIS flesh to do that because the flesh doesn’t give life as stated in John 6. It’s the Spirit that gives life. Feeding on HIS Spirit is truly believing. It’s like saying I will feed on the Word of the Lord through the Bible. We don’t eat the Bible, we read it.

That’s why I always say that the Eucharist is Spirit as well.

You have to remember the Jews were thinking that Jesus was telling them to eat blood which is forbidden in Leviticus. Not realizing HE would never do this they didn’t understand what the true meaning of HIS statements were which was to believe in HIM. Not being able to get past this difficult teaching Jesus finally clarifies by saying what if you saw me ascend to where I came from. Implying that if they saw HIM ascend to Heaven would that cause them to believe. Then HE follows that point with the clarification of the flesh and spirit. And remember also that Jesus in the same verses tells us that no one can come to HIM unless the Father sends them. Meaning GOD will not send false believers to Jesus. Remember verse 64:

“Yet there are some of you who do not believe” Jesus keeps hitting the point of believing. That’s the whole point of this message.

Consider verse 68 and 69.

68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Peter confirms that they believe.

Let me ask you this. Does eating the Eucharist give us our Faith?? Or do we eat the Eucharist because of our Faith? Does eating the Eucharist get us to Heaven or do we believe in Jesus to get to Heaven? Does eating the Eucharist give us eternal life, or does believing in Jesus give us eternal life.

PEACE

I was never implying that the Spirit lied or would lie. I believe the Spirit knows what’s in our hearts and whether or not Jesus is truly in our hearts.

This understanding of the Spirit is what needs to be clarified, and then it will all make sense to you, That Jesus is truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist.

**If you take Jesus to mean eat my body drink my blood in a figurative way from his Aramaic it means figuratively = To persecute and assault him. See, Psalms 27:2, Isaiah 9:18-20, 49:26, Micah 3:3, 2Sam 23:15-17, Rev.17:6, 16. This eat my flesh and drink my blood is what is meant in scripture when speaking figuratively. Now how does John 6 sounds when you translate in figurative language this is what you (figurativley speaking) think Jesus stated the following, John 6:54 Who ever persecutes me and assaults me has eternal life, translated figurativley from original language. This does not make sense, how can anyone attain eternal life if you persecute and assault Jesus body in bread and wine.

Now remember Jesus ends his bread of life discours in verse 59 These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. End of Story.

The flesh and Spirit explanation begins later in verse 63 after the bread of life discourse was completed.

Do you believe in the Father Son Holy Spirit?, or Father Son Holy Symbolic? as one apologist puts it.

God appeared to man in many ways: In the desert as a Rock, that gave living waters, In a burning bush before Moses that did not burn, In the fire with the 3 Hebrew boys, In a Shekinah Cloud, In the Tent with Moses, In the ark of the Covenant, Here is were one is smitten by God for touching the Ark, can you imagine that, dying for touching a Piece of wood. God can make himself present to his children in Eucharist if his Word says it is. Yes this is eternal food for our souls on our Journey in this desert, and we have the Rock with us that gives the life giving waters, ( the Catholic church baptism), and the Rock was Christ,

Another analogy this Jesus truly present body, blood, soul and divinity in the Eucharist, is that it represents the Marriage supper of the Lamb. Meaniing, bride and the groom consumate their Marriage here. Jesus in his Body, the Church, and the Church consumes the groom Jesus in the Eucharist, thus fulfilling the Marriage Supper of the Lamb in time, until it gets eternally fulfilled at the second coming.

The other analogy to consider, that this Eucharist must be his body, blood, soul, and divinity, is the fulfillment of the old covenant passover. The Lamb had to be slain, the blood had to placed above Gods peoples home dwelling. But you know what they did with the slain Lamb, They had to eat it, and the blood above their dwelling is what saved the first born from death.

Why do you think 1 Peter 2:2-10 deals with God’s house and People, to be a royal priesthood, a chosen race, a holy nation, a people of his own. He also mentions in verse 3, for you have tasted that the Lord is good. The royal high Priest is Jesus, we are his bride, and it was only the high priest and his family were the only ones to consume the Lamb sacraficed to God. Jesus fulfills all of this and more, than I can relate at this time.

We are that royal priesthood, that consumes the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the World.

So God is the same yesterday today and forever more he does not change. And neither will his Catholic church, built upon the Rock of ages.

Peace, and may the Holy Spirit enlighten you**

Can anyone explain the difference between a symbolic faith belief in the Eucharist and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist? What is the difference between symbolic Spirit, and litteral Spirit?
