Just letting you know that the rules in the Catholic News forum require that you use the title of the article as the title of the thread. As such, this is probably going to end up getting closed before long. You might consider PM’ing the moderation staff to see if they would allow you to change the title.

As for the rest, I agree that this is highly disturbing. If anyone can demonstrate how it is possible for someone to support homosexual civil unions that is not at the same time supporting the mortal sin of gay sexual relationships, which according to the Church are intrinsically disordered, I am open to hearing about it. I cannot intellectually equate the support of such unions with the Church’s teachings on how those who have homosexual tendencies are called, as are all Catholics, to live a life of chastity.
Me either. Let us hope that whichever Marini is at the epicenter of all this, perhaps he was misunderstood. If not, let us pray that he will reconsider his position. :gopray:

It is Abp. Piero Marini, not the current Msgr. Guido Marini (thank goodness!).

Frankly I’m not surprised, given the Abp’s associations and writings. Not a negative judgement to him, just some observations.

Anyway, his message seems to be an open admission that “same sex unions” should be recognized, and also seems to be a very thinly-veiled major slight at Benedetto’s Pontificate. So now we have curial officers giving interviews like this.

The folks at the good Catholic Herald seem to agree, as does Fr. Z.

I only hope there is some MAJOR error here.

People who follow these things know exactly what you mean. What is not surprising, but appalling, is that once the last Pope left people had no problem speaking out in unjust ways. This means people all along held these erroneous views within the Church. It is not surprising the problems exist as they do.

Where is his respect for Pope Emeritus Benedict? Is there any other SIN that these select Bishops(our authentic teachers of faith and morals) want to legitimize?

There probably is some degree of error. At least we should assume so, and then pray that (if it is true), that his heart will be changed and that he will make a public correction.

Some of the “major error” would not just be confined to the Msgr., but also to Fr. Z, who believed it right away and brought up (according to his own interpretation) the Msgr"s dirty laundry. That is also something to be wary of.

From Vatican Insider:
“It is necessary to recognize the union of persons of the same sex, because there are many couples that suffer because their civil rights aren’t recognized. What can’t be recognized is that this union is equivalent to marriage”
“It’s a breath of fresh air; it’s opening a window onto springtime and onto hope. We had been breathing the waters of a swamp and it had a bad smell. We’d been in a church afraid of everything, with problems such as Vatileaks and the paedophilia scandals. With Francis we’re talking about positive things”. With the new Pope, added Mgr. Marini, “there’s a different air of freedom, a church that’s closer to the poor and less problematic”.

Yeah, I was not impressed by that either; IMO it steers dangerously close to “rash judgment,” and that’s all I’d better say or I might be steering too close to that myself!

It isn’t the Msgr., it’s the Abp.

Fr. Z didn’t say anything that wasn’t true though, he just corroborated with things that the Abp. had said in the past.

For Fr. Z to say that Abp. Marini’s statement that V2 dealt with doctrine implied that there was a secret motive to CHANGE doctrine is sheer ridiculousness, he provides no credible support for his charge. This is slander.

Father Z needs to stop his gossip column. I hope he is disciplined by his superiors.
The world does not need his running commentary on things, as if he were the Pope himself.

We have a Church of extremes now, and he represents one of them.

If we can post statements that are unfavorable about Abp. Marini based on 2nd and 3rd hand sources, we can surely take Fr. Z to task for his statements in his own blog - a primary source!!!

If one is disallowed, then both should be.

The article in the original post said “Msgr”, that is why I used that term before.

I enjoy Fr. Z’s posts on the liturgy immensely. But his posts picking fights with those he perceives to be liberals is petty and of little interest to anyone but himself. He should set up a separate “My personal rants against liberals” blog.

It seems that Fr. Z is an American priest in the diocese of Velletri-Segni in Italy. His superior is the Cardinal Bishop of the diocese, none other than Cardinal Francis Arinze!!!

I suggest that those who are so disposed write to Cardinal Arinze about the harmful, slanderous and divisive effects of Fr. Z’s blog.

As of the time this was written en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_Bishop#Cardinal_bishop
Cardinal Arinze was his superior. If the Cardinal Bishop has been changed since then, I will try to find out who it is now.
This nonsense has to stop.

The part I highlighted in blue sounds a bit political to me. That’s how I interpret it. And contrary to what some might think each individual will interpret what they read and hear through a number of personal filters (e.g., educational background, social class, political beliefs etc.).

But this sounds like typical modern Catholic stuff coming from the hierarchy of the Church. In light of pedophilia (attractions/actions) and Christ’s comments about sinning in adultery (in your heart) without ever touching or talking to a woman not your wife, this sounds no less political than current Church teaching influenced by biological/genetic determinism, that it’s morally okay to be gay just as long as you don’t act on it.

In other words it is analogous to proclaiming it is morally okay to be a pedophile so long as you don’t touch kids and okay to thinking about having sex with a married woman not your wife so long as you never touch her.

If one is so inclined to erect an ad hoc argument to protect current church teaching about it being okay to be gay (which is not a Catholic dogma) as long as you don’t play, I really don’t see why it should be so difficult to erect an ad hoc argument protecting this Bishop’s comments and showing it only aligns with and defends current Catholic teaching–especially related to gay marriage. I wouldn’t let it ruffle your feathers. Just make up an ad hoc.

I think when you’re dealing with the ground. Foot troops. The Evangelical Protestants do better. And I think when you’re dealing with the political, diplomatic level, at the level of politicians and academia, the hierarchy of the Catholic Church does better.

That’s my view anyways.

With that said I’m not upset with this Bishop at all. From his photo he looks like a kind and gentle man and his words quoted seem to suggest his intentions are meant well.

The road to Hades is paved with good intentions, When you are in a place of authority and are speaking in the media to the public, you have to word your comments so that they can not be construed as sinful- avoid all appearances of evil.

But to be fair…with today’s media and how people view things, that is almost an impossible task. Best to speak fewer words. Make the most of the words you do use and at times, sometimes what you don’t say can speak more then talking much.

I see what you mean - in the excerpted part it does say Mgr, the rest of the article keeps saying Archbishop. Maybe they made a typo in the article?

Msgr is a honorific given to bishops in many European countries (remember, it literally means ‘my Lord’). In this country, it *typically **only ***refers to those who are given the honor of being a Chaplain of His Holiness, but that is ***not ***true everyplace.
