why is prayer such a useless endeavor? i have been praying every day for years, and have NEVER had a prayer answered. not even a “no”. i just get nothing, emptiness, absence. why is prayer such an exercise in futility for some, when it seems to be such a wonderful experience for others? why is God so active in the lives of some, and so absent in the lives of others?

Since I don’t know you, I can only speak from personal experience. Several years ago, when I felt the same as you – a total absence of God in my life – it wasn’t because God wasn’t in my life. It was because I failed to recognize Him in my life.

Talking with God (for me) isn’t like picking up the phone and having a conversation. God doesn’t answer prayers the way that I would expect him to, or in the time frame that I would expect him to.

If you have faith that God will indeed answer your prayers – then believe me, He will. Just be prepared to look for the answers in a slightly different fashion from what you had expected – because God is definitely very creative!

If you’re wondering why does God communicate with us this way? Why does He make it so difficult? Well, He’s God, silly. He can do it any way that He wants to. Be assured that He is doing it with your best interests (long-term) in mind.

One other thing. People always say that God will always answer your prayers. Some people interpret that to mean that God will always give you what you want. It doesn’t work that way. He’s not Santa Claus.

In my opinion, if you’re praying for a better job, praying for a better financial outlook, or something selfish like that – it’s hard to tell what the answer will be. But if you pray for something virtuous like more faith, strength, courage, hope, love, etc. – odds are pretty good that God will help you out.

Finally, in my experience, God really demands a lot of faith from us. We truly have to believe that He will answer us – and we must totally submit to Him. Once that happens, the channel of communication seems to feel more open.

great, just what i wanted, a spiritual game of “hide-and-seek”.

In my opinion its about faith.
Or its about what you believe.

Some people’s faith is so strong, that they wake up in the morning thinking God spoke to them in there dream…so they answer back.
Then they read there bible, they think God is talking to them through what they read.

Then they answer back, get in there car and think God is talking to them through the bumper stickers on the back of peoples cars.

Now you have dreams, and see bumper stickers, and mabey read the bible…the difference is what you believe.

Prayer is not futile. Believe it or not God always answers prayers. Just as a child asks a parent for a snake or scorpion, a loving parent does not give it to him, but knowing best may give him nothing. I ask you, what was best for the child. Whatever God does, he does as he in his infinite wisdom knows what is best for our salvation. That we can always count on. I say the following as a lesson, not as a judgment. When we pray, we should always start by prayers of love, praise and thanksgiving. After we offer our prayers to God for who and what he is, we then offer our prayers for others. Sincere prayers for the needs of others, which again, will be answered as God knows is best for their salvation. Then and only then do we offer our own prayers. They should not always be prayers of an I want, kind of like a child in a grocery store. Pray for faith, or a deepening of faith. An increase in love of God and love of neighbor. After this, we pray for our own needs. Notice I did not say for our wants. e.g., I would love to be the winner of the mega lottery. Boy that would be fun. But I would never considering praying for such a thing, always thinking of the line of it being easier for a camel to go though an eye of a needle than a rich man to get into heaven. A careful examine of ones self would show you how your prayers fit this outline. if it does not, than maybe you should consider changing what it is you are praying for. and pray for something else. Remember, even no answer is an answer in that a No is what is best for your salvation. Just something to think about.

For my prayer life to become meaningful, I have had to abandon my attachment to words. To learn to sit silently in the presence of God. It is very difficult for me, as I am a more verbal person, but it has brought a sense of peace that “explanations” and “conversations” did not.

in the Book, “The Virgin Mary in the Kingdom of the Divine Will” the Virgin Mary says that many people who pray a lot are not changed and their prayers not answered because of one main thing: they continue to do their own will. Jesus says, “many say unto me Lord, Lord…” but the people Jesus commends are those “that do the Will of my Heavenly Father.”

In other words, although prayer is VITAL to the Spiritual Life, equally important is DOING what you know is true and what God has taught you. When you are obedient to what God has shown you, then He will show you more. And if you are not obedient to your understanding of what is right and pleasing to God, you dont have much--including prayers that ever get answered. As Jesus says, "to him who has, more will be given, but to him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away...."
Thats a scary thought—unless you are obedient. Always be willing to do the Will of God. Look for it, ask God constantly what His Will is when you are unsure, and then–most importantly-- do it! :):)🙂

I felt the same way until I was given the grace to see that to treat God like some genie in the sky, and then to live my life as if I weren’t required to do anything in return results in sheer frustration.

It took making an effort to be holy and love God by keeping His commands first, and then prayer became a “wonderful experience” for me.

My only hope is that there is some great reward in the next life for those of us who spend this life feeling like this.

Many times, it seems to be. But there are different levels of prayer as described by St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa d’Avila. There is also a spiritual condition known as the “dark night of the soul” where a person finds an absence of God rather than the presence of God in his/her life. Mother Teresa was one who felt this for most of her life, yet she used it to continue your ministry to the sick and dying. You are not alone in this. By the very fact that saints have experienced the same as you in their prayer lives probably means that God is closer to you than you think. There is also a little book out called “Practicing the Presence of God” by a Bro. Lawrence - a very old treatise on reversing how we view God in our lives. Instead of an active searching for God, we need to be aware that we are in God’s Presence all of the time, and He surrounds us with it. When we understand this, our prayer life takes on an added dimension - that God is here with us, present to us, and that He knows our prayers and concerns. What you might think is futile is actually God’s full attention to our petitions, and being answered in a way that serves Him, not us. Maybe this helps; maybe it doesn’t. I just thought to put my two-cents in here. God bless.

be not silent to me…

You expect a voice from a burning bush to answer you whenever you pray or something? Why? God created the world around us, and the people around us. Oftentimes, if we listen attentively to what they are saying and think about it a bit, He does speak to us through them. There are other ways He speaks to us - the Bible for one, so get reading!

Just a little hint - if you pray for something to happen and it happens, that’s God telling you yes. If you pray for something to happen and it doesn’t happen that is God telling you either ‘no’ or ‘not now’.

There’s really no hide and seek involved, although sometimes you do need to think a little about what God is trying to tell you through others and through the events of your life. It’s staggering the times I will be thinking about a particular concern of mine, and read the Bible or go to Mass and lo and behold the readings will have something directly relevant to say to me.

Sounds much like Cain and Able does it not? One had their heart on God where the other on how they thought was good enough, and probably that may relate to many.

God has NO favorites, pray so that the glory goes to God may help.
Godbless.

great, just what i wanted, a spiritual game of “hide-and-seek”.
I don’t know about you, but too frequently I try to hide from God instead of seeking Him.

Hiding in the sense of not wanting to be live in Truth, in the light of righteousness and genuine love. Not seeking Him due to apathy, despair, and/or self-centeredness rather than God-centeredness and other-centeredness.

For reflection and prayer:

“For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare, not for woe! plans to give you a future full of hope. When you call me, when you go to pray to me, I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart, you will find me with you, says the Lord, and I will change your lot…” (Jeremiah 29:11-14)

If you are speaking of prayers of intercession, you were always answered, not by email, text message, USPS or phone, but by the fruits of the prayer. Either you got what you asked for, immediately or eventually (a yes) or you had to wait (a maybe or a yes but not yet) or you did not (a no, it is not good for you my child and does not fill my plan for you).

If you prayed for the benefit of someone else, you most likely will never have means of knowing how the prayer was answered.

If you are speaking of prayers of adoration, contrition and thanksgiving, you don’t need an answer, anymore than you need an answer when you tell your wife or child, “I love you”, “I’m sorry”, “I am so grateful for what you have done for me.” The love IS the answer.

The purpose of prayer is not to engender an immediate reaction or sensible message from God, it is to bring the heart, mind and will of the individual closer to Gods heart, mind and will. Look at the fruits of your prayer, not to your emotions, and there you will find the answer. Are you praying in order to conform God’s will, or in order to place demands on him and bend him to your will?

Those who consciously expect and look for the action of God in every circumstance of life find it, those who reject the reality will never find it. Those who expect God to reveal Himself by His own chosen means will receive His Revelation, full and complete in Christ His Son. Those who reject it will never perceive it.

thank you all for some very well thought out answers. my apologies to JoeSchmeau for my wise-crack about “hide-and-seek”. just a few quick responses to some posts:
Then and only then do we offer our own prayers. They should not always be prayers of an I want, kind of like a child in a grocery store.
prayers not answered because of one main thing: they continue to do their own will.
here-in lies the rub, because the only intentions i have for myself are to know God’s will and to be able to do it! but if God does not let me know what His will is, then how can I be obedient to it?
You expect a voice from a burning bush to answer you whenever you pray or something? Why? God created the world around us, and the people around us.
no, i don’t expect a burning bush. but i would expect something more than just coincidence or happy feelings. wouldn’t God WANT us to know His will, and not confuse it with the will of someone (or something) else? how do we differentiate? how do i know one persons advice is God speaking to me, and another persons advice is not God speaking to me? just because someone gives advice that is morally correct, doesn’t mean that is God’s specific will for me.
Are you praying in order to conform God’s will, or in order to place demands on him and bend him to your will?
i am praying to know WHAT God’s will is, so then i will be ABLE to conform to it.

i guess one more question is, how do we differentiate God’s voice from the noise of life, or from our own voice (desires), or from the voice of the evil one? how do i know what is God’s voice, and what is NOT God’s voice?

for myself, and i think for most people, i just want to know that what i am doing is the right thing. and if i am not doing the right thing, i would like to know it, and so be able to change it. i just want to be comfortable knowing i am on the right track, or at least working towards getting on the right track. the silence i hear, and the absence i feel, only fills me with fear and dread. it is the uncertainty of my position that causes me to despair, not knowing if what i am doing is pleasing to God, or if i am riding the racehorse to hell. it is the uncertainty that causes me to question and inspect everything, but never coming up with a real answer. i don’t expect things to be easy, and i most certainly understand that it wont be, but the inability to take comfort in the knowledge that i am at least heading in the right direction is very discouraging and disheartening. is the absence i feel a sign that i am on the right track, or is it a sign that i am in the elevator traveling downwards? is there really a way to know the true answer to that question in this life? i don’t know.

How do we know God’s will for us? It is a good and important question.
A few Sundays ago, my pastor talked about loving our neighbors and following God’s commandments. He said by doing so, we are doing God’s will.

That is a true basic guideline. If we love God and love our neighbors, we are indeed doing God’s will. But how about the specifics, you asked. Well, before we can figure out the specifics, we must fulfill the general first. I believe to know God’s will is to do with our relationship with God. When two persons are deeply in love, often times they don’t have to say things out loud. With an exchange of glance, they catch the other’s intention.

It works the same way with God. When we are deeply in love with the Beloved, we know His heart, we know His voice. So, develop a close relationship with God first, then you will discern His will easier. If you are distant from him, how could you hear him when He speaks?

Now, God gives each of us common sense and human wisdom. We have to utilize our God given wisdom and our reasoning to make a good decision. For example, if you get two job offers, which one to take? If God opened both doors for you, and gave you favor from both companies, then they both are in God’s permissive will. It depends on your **prayerful **decision to take one. Does God know which one will be better for you? Sure. If you choose the lesser one, will things still work out? Yes, you may take a detour from the better route, but God is always with you, He continues to guide guard and walk with you.

In your initial post, you said you have never received any answered prayers. I wonder how that could be? For example, if you pray for health and protection for you and your loved ones, and you are all well, isn’t that an answered prayer? If you look closer with a grateful heart, you will find many answered prayers and blessings. How do you think for a relationship to work out if the essence of gratitude is absent? I am not saying you are ungrateful. It is just your initial statement sounds that you ought to look closer.

Anyway, to hear God’s voice and know his will is to do with our relationship with God. Whoever wants to hear God more clearly should start from cultivating the relationship with God.

Hope this helps a little.

Just a little hint - if you pray for something to happen and it happens, that’s God telling you yes. If you pray for something to happen and it doesn’t happen that is God telling you either ‘no’ or ‘not now’.
Isn’t is also possible that God doesn’t say yes or no, but just let’s the outcome that was going to happen actually happen?

Suppose that we lived in a place that had a King.
Suppose further, that when one wanted to know what the King wanted one to do,
that one went to the castle and got to talk personally with Majesty,
who is loved by his people.

One day, the King goes someplace, for a while,
and now some of the people, who wish to please him, say:
“What shall we do, the King not being here to talk to,
to ask what is his will for me? How can I know if what I do,
in His absence, will be pleasing to Him?” http://bestsmileys.com/nono/9.gif

Farfel, who is one of the oldest inhabitants of the Kingdom -
who hasn’t said word one, for 40 years, who sits by a wood stove,

hears this discussion swirling about him.

“What shall we do? How can we know his will?”

Suddenly, the people are startled out of their wits.
A courteous, soft-spoken voice is heard - coming from the area close
to the wood stove:

“He has always told us what he wants us to do,” says Farfel.
“Just do that, until his majesty returns.”

Farfel nods off in sleep. He knows that Majesty knows
how his bones ache, summer and winter, and that He
would want Farfel to have a nap.
