The Gitmo Guard Who Converted to Islam

“Soon, Holdbrooks was ordering books on Arabic and Islam. During an evening talk with Errachidi in early 2004, the conversation turned to the shahada, the one-line statement of faith that marks the single requirement for converting to Islam (“There is no God but God and Muhammad is his prophet”). Holdbrooks pushed a pen and an index card through the mesh, and asked Errachidi to write out the shahada in English and transliterated Arabic. He then uttered the words aloud and, there on the floor of Guantánamo’s Camp Delta, became a Muslim.”

Here’s my shahada:

There is NO GOD but Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Jesus is God Incarnate risen from the dead!

So, what is the point? Like my momma says “If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you do it, too?”

If this was a story about a guard that became Catholic I have a feeling your response would be different.

The Guard Who Found Islam

MashaAllah , despite the hostile propaganda against Islam, truth seekers are becoming Muslims . Surely God is the best planner.

Maybe, maybe not. The link that I read had no reason for his conversion, no rational. Unlike so many “Look at how this Christian converted” stories posted by Muslims, this one is verifiable and can be referenced. However, we see no rational given as to why he converted.

I do like to see what made people choose the faith that they follow. As of right now, I am of the opinion that this is a highly impressionable young man who was turned by persuasion and not conviction of heart.

After all, most people with holes in their ears like that do respond to peer-pressure…

He saw Muslim men turn to God and find comfort in their religion. When they should have been in torment, instead they were steadfast. Also, many were being wrongly accused and tortured by “Christian” men from a “Christian” nation. I think the rationale is pretty clear.

btw, peer pressure at Gitmo would have led to exactly the opposite. Maybe you should read the article again…

With little prior exposure to religion, Holdbrooks was struck at Gitmo by the devotion detainees showed to their faith. “A lot of Americans have abandoned God, but even in this place, [the detainees] were determined to pray,” he says.

Embracing the obscene fantasies of a pedophile who was deceived by demons is an odd definition of finding truth.

And when he sees Muslims toruring and killing others, will he turn back?

The fact of the matter is that he was in close contact with Muslims who sold him a bill of goods about their faith. Being told on a daily basis of how wonderful Islam is and how there is no compulsion in religion and how innocent they are. Please.

Ah, so if he spent a year with the Priests at EWTN, would he convert? Or a year with Coptics or Chaldeans in Muslim lands as they are attacked yet they hold to their faith, will he convert.

All that this does is shake my faith in the younger generation of Americans. It does not shake my faith in Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, Second Person of the Trinity Incarnate. Nor does it mean that Muhammed was anything good from God.

I’m not too concerned about your disgust for Islam. I just wanted to point out that the article gave ample reason for his conversion.

Very likely it would have a tremendous positive impact on his views of Christianity. Fact of the matter, in his situation, Islam obviously had the moral “upper-hand”.

Fair enough on both counts

Is that a pic of him?? He looks like a freak, look at that ear gauge! This also proves that only sociopaths convert to Islam.

the ear gauge does not proove sociopathy. What it shows is that he was around people who thought it was cool, and so he thought it was cool. These people also probably thought religion was not cool, so he did as well.

He gets to Gitmo, and he sees these Muslim men praying and saying that being Muslim is cool. This is now the group that he “runs” with. Suddenly, he wants to be cool again. So he converts.
