I love this version of the Bible. Are there any other versions you use to help people begin there Bible study?
 
I use esword, from esword.net, on my computer. I have downloaded the Douay-Rheims (Catholic), Murdock and Etheridge (English translations of Aramaic), King James Version, King James Version w/Strong’s numbers, Latin Vulgate, Greek New Testament Interlinear, Tischendorf’s Greek New Testament w/Strong’s numbers, RSV, and a couple Septuagint Old Testaments one w/Strong’s numbers. I also have the dictionaries and several commentaries; as well as the writings of the early Church fathers, Catholic Encylopedia, Popes, Heresies, Catechism of the Catholic Church, and notes compiled over time. There even more than listed here.
 
The Douay-Rheims is hard to beat. It suffers from none of the modernist revisionism of some other translations. And, as much as I like the RSV-2CE, it is based on a protestant translation, and “cleaned up” - although not completely in line with earlier Catholic bibles. I have found only one flub so far. First and foremost, Catholic doctrine should be easily and clearly demonstrable from the scriptures - many modern Catholic translations (NAB is the prime offender) greatly complicate this, and tilt toward ecumenism much more than they do toward unity.

The Haydock Commentary is excellent for use in scripture study.

As compared to the NAB, no complaint at all. But, check out a “Confraternity” or “CCD” bible (from 1941-1969). Although it has a bit of transitional feel to it, I far prefer it to the NAB (and the NAB’s horrible footnotes). You can get a good-excelllent CCD bible on eBay for $10 with a little shopping.
 
I have always found the best catholic edition of the bible to be whichever one I happen to be reading at the time!

The RSV-2CE is approved for use in the English speaking Catholic Mass (unaltered), that is Catholic enough for me! 👍

How could in not be Holy enough? Isn’t it approved by the Vatican? Sorry if I sound ignorant, I just was caught off guard by this.

🤷 Some people believe they know better than the Church. The Ignatius Bible (RSV-2CE) was approved by the Vatican for use in the mass, so it is ‘holy’ enough for the Church but not for some members of that Church? It is one thing not to like an approved Bible translation, but it is another thing to claim that it is not ‘holy’ enough. :confused:

Yeah the RSV-2CE is my everyday Bible also and has been for 6 years (since it was first published). I have many translations, but I use this one the most!
 
I absolutely love the Ignatius Bible. My only complaint is the lack of footnotes on each page like in my D-R bible. I understand there’s a study version out there of the NT only, but that the footnotes are all in the back?
 
I bought the individual books of the New Testament, Ignatius study Bible. My only complaint is the prints seems to be getting smaller and smaller, as I get older and older. 😛

No, the notes to the Ignatius Catholic Study Bbile (N.T.) are all at the bottom of each page. I highly recommend this book. 👍
 
I can’t think of a better gift than this Bible for somebody beginning there spiritual journey.

I’m sorry! I should have clarified why I made that statement. There have been many threads about bibles in general and Catholic bibles specifically, and I’ve been dismayed to see the bible that I read daily and love disparaged. It’s just that sometimes, some people equate something old with holy and something (relatively) new with suspicion.

You just learn to ignore those people. 🙂
 
I only have two wishes for the Ignatius Bible (RSV-2CE) right now, 1) that they would come out with a large print version, and 2) that the upcoming (complete) ‘Ignatius Catholic Study Bible’ will be available in a single volume and not two volumes as has been rumored.
