Let’s all understand here that generalizations are not statements meant to exclude exceptions and that they can be helpful if they reflect reality. My experience has also shown that a vast majority of those who have left the faith never really understood it to begin with. Saying that does not mean that every person who left Catholicism was ignorant of it, just 90% of the converts I have met. So if you are an exception, don’t get your feathers ruffled. I’ve also found that converts TO Catholicism from other Protestant denominations tend to be the most educated in their faith traditions, quite the reverse. Just look among the ranks of the leading Catholic apologists and cultural voices of today. Scott Hahn and Deal Hudson jump into my mind right away - both former Protestant ministers. Why these two trends? The uninformed Catholic often gets led away when a Protestant tells him something he never knew about Catholicism, such as the worship of Mary, the necessity of working your way to heaven, the fact that Catholics have to believe everything the pope says is true, etc. Traffic in the oncoming lane, however, is usually someone who led himself to Catholicism through study of the Scriptures and Church history.
Now please don’t feel the need to remind the forum that you are an exception to this, but please do tell me of your experience of a different state of affairs.
