I agree that when a secular historian would be asked what does the Catholic Church teach as who was the first Pope, the answer will always be Peter. That is different than looking at the history of the church Jesus is the foundation of. **
And yet, they don’t say that Jesus is divine (which the Church teaches), nor that He rose from the dead (which the Church also teaches).

They simply say, there was this man called Jesus who started the Christian religion, and when he knew He was going to be crucified, he put one of his twelve special friends in charge of it. This was Peter, and today’s Christian Pope is his successor, and here is the list of them, etc., and then they go on to the next letter of the alphabet, and start talking about Confucianism, which was started by a guy named Confucius, a philosopher who established a school for kings, etc.
