Are Roman Catholics allowed to pray the Jesus prayer? Do any of you (RCs) pray it? Can it be used as part of a devotion or novenna?

Roman Catholics are allowed to use any private devotion that Eastern Catholics use.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in its section on prayer, mentions two prayers specifically that form the model of how to pray. One is the Lord’s Prayer. The other is the Jesus Prayer. Why wouldn’t Roman Catholics be allowed to pray it?

I cannot ever recall it being used in a Catholic mass or part of a devotion in an RC church so was not sure why this was the case.

Greetings in Christ,
I am a Roman Catholic. We can pray the Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Or something similar). It seems like it is more common in Eastern Catholicism, but all Catholics can pray it whenever they want.
God bless and Mary keep you.

Of course Roman Catholics are allowed to pray it. Of course I pray it (generally after every Holy Communion and when I genuflect at Adoration). Of course if can be used as part of a devotion or novena.

The Jesus Prayer is from Scripture. There is no problem with using Scripture in prayer.

We say the Kyrie Eleison at Mass on a regular basis. The English words of the Kyrie Eleison are

“Lord Have Mercy, Christ Have Mercy, Lord Have Mercy”.

It’s pretty easy to see this is a truncated version of the Jesus Prayer.

The Scripture reading with the story of the Pharisee and the publican, who said the Jesus Prayer, also comes up as a reading in the calendar of readings for Roman Catholic Mass.
We were even taught that story in Catholic school during a time of rather poor catechesis.

Why would there be any opposition to it? I fail to see why there’s a problem. I’m canonically Latin, and while I do sometimes go to an Eastern Catholic Church, I have been given, as Penance from a Latin Catholic priest, the Jesus prayer.

The Jesus prayer is actually listed as an option for the Act of Contrition in the ritual book for Confession.

I admit to having my days and nights scrambled, so I still may be in sleep mode, or not yet fully awake, but “the ritual book for Confession” isn’t jarring my memory. I quickly checked my bookshelves and don’t see a reference to it among my collection, either. Is that a book used only by priests? Lol! Or is my dimmer switch still turned on?

It’s called The Rite of Penance, but I didn’t figure anyone would know what that was, so I spoke descriptively.
