My question is about the Jewish Law and its relevancy to everyone who believes in God. We see in the gospels that Jesus says the Laws of the Old Testament still stand, until the day when EVERYTHING is fulfilled, which hasn’t come to be. However, Paul and other early Christians seem to say that the Law does not apply anymore. Below I have posted several verses on the Law from the NT, I know they are long! How can we reconcile these? Jesus says the law stands, yet Paul says he is no longer under the law.
Mattew 23:1-3 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.
Matthew 5:17-20 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
1 Corinthians 9:20-21 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law.
Acts 24:14
“I (Paul) believe everything that is in accordance with the Law and that is written in the Prophets,”
Romans 4:14-15
For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.
Romans 5:20
The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.
