I don’t really blame the media, though they usuallly have an axe to grind, this needed to be exposed. Yep, i’ve made the point before about too much trust been given to psychiatrists and the rest who claimed they could cure/treat such appetites when they say other sexual aberrations can’t be treated.

To be fair, I think we’ve always been in that time, in some shape or form.

Not familiar with this the details of this story, but, seems to be one repeated across the world…How much JPII knew is anyones guess. He was in poor health for a long time before his death and I sometimes wonder how much in control over the entire institution of the Church he truly was, and how much was delegated to others.
But the inaction of other leaders, silence and cover-ups, was dismaying at the start, but downright infuriating now. Only this week Cardinal Brady was forced to admit he sat in on investigations and meetings where victims (still very young children at the time) were sworn to silence and secrecy. Now, he accepted postions of leadership, and all the while, over the decades as these scandals broke, he still remained silent over this, holding his hands up as to have no accountabilty. He could have said outright at the start, that the systems in place then were flawed, that his own Bishop at the time was at fault, that he was sorry and he would make it a point of his leadership not to have the same mistakes happen again…but no…the truth had to be dragged out kicking and screaming…
One starts to wonder if there is anyone among that generation of priests not tainted by this outragous abuse of power and trust.
You can probably guess I feel very angry and let down by the Church that I love.

I dont feel anger or let down by the Church. The Church is spotless she is the BRIDE OF CHRIST. However, individual Catholics often let themselves and others down. (remember priests, bishops, etc are just that individul Catholic who often do bad things). We pray and hope they rectify and correct these terrible situations. It is not the Church, but individual members of the Church.

Yes,it’s individual members. Remember the mid centuries and the battles for Papal power within the Church? Christ did warn us of this, be we still haven’t listened. What bothers me is that these actions turn away many ( who may not or do not understand ) from the Church. This deprives them of the Joys and Blessings available to them because of our actions.

By the way, here in the Steubenville, Ohio, diocese our Bishop has instituted zero tolerance, whether the accused party is guilty or not. I think that this is what we need throughout the Church.

There are always rumors like that. Remember “Pope Joan”? Also you have characters like Dan Brown and Jack Chick who are always trying to destroy the Church with their “truths”.

Yeah, but if Engel is making a false claim about Paul VI, there’s no telling how many other false claims may be in the book.

There was a priest in the fifties, the founder of the Servants of the Paraclete, who thought these men were beyond rehabilitation. So much so, that he purchase an island to put them on where they could do the least amount of harm. Paul VI made him sell it. Long story short, his order became infected with the very same cancer he was trying to eradicate.

There are a few books you should read:

1. Sacrilege - Leon J.Podles
2. Lead Us Not Into Temptation - Jason Berry
3. Rite of Sodomy - Randy Engel (This book can be ordered from her webside by the same name)

The Church has always had this problem but it exploded after the Vatican Council. But don’t take my word for it, read the above books, and be prepared to be horrified.

The priest of whom you speak was Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald, who happened to be a good friend of my saintly great-aunt in Massachusetts (she passed away in her mid-90s, back in about 1976).

Decades ago, she told my dad (now 90) that, as far back as the 1930s, Fr. Fitzgerald spoke to her of the terrible “cancer” in the Church, which, if not severely dealt with would cause great scandal. Boy, was he right.

I have also met Jason Berry; his book was excellent. So sad that it was so necessary.
