The Many Ways We Are Called to Ministry: Share your stories here!

We can look at the lives of the saints, and perhaps of family members and friends and see how God can call us to be great champions of causes, advocates for particular groups in need, special servants at Mass, or leaders in theological movements. Whether it’s the cantor hitting all the high notes, the man who evangelizes at the bus stop, or the married couple championing for chastity, these blessings and vocations are clear missions from God. But what about those of us who are perhaps not (or not just yet) called to a singular, clear mission or cause? Is everyone meant to have such a mission, or are some of us called to live our lives in Christ in different ways?

This is an opportunity for those who are living out a less obvious calling (or callings), perhaps after struggling a bit with the notion of what a calling is supposed to be, to share their stories, so that we all may witness the vary of blessings bestowed by our God.

I was a police officer from 1979-2010. I had a captive audience, so to speak, in the rear of my patrol car. In the last few years of my service, quite a few of them heard the Gospel message, and several of them got a pocket-sized new testament. Then, cancer arrived and life changed. Now, I offer hope and encouragement to other cancer patients and their loved ones, both online and when the opportunity surfaces during treatment. When God closes a door, He opens a window.

I feel God has called me to help my relatives die ready for eternity. Going back many years, it seems that I’ve been placed in a number of situations of bringing a priest in for the last rites. These situations include three sisters and two brothers. I pray earnestly daily for several other relatives to return to the Lord. I believe that when (said hopefully) I get to heaven, that I will continue to work for the salvation of family members.
