LOLAre you 100% sure that I wasn’t sent here by the government to lull you into complacency?
That’s correct. The emperor was Nero. The “mark of the beast” was referring to him.Isn’t there also an interpretation that says this apocalyptic scripture applied to the time that it was written and the near future? The numbers six-hundred and sixty-six add up to the name of the Roman emperor that was ruling at the time it was written? The emperor had instituted emperor worship and wished to be worshiped not only posthumously, but while he was alive as well; something that would have been very offensive to Christians. Didn’t freed slaves also get tatooed on their forehead and hand to identify them as citizens or something similar as well, thereby accepting Roman citizenship and an obligation to worship the emperor? I read something on this recently but I can’t honestly remember where… it seems to make sense though…

John 6:66
From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
When we refuse to to acknowledge the Truth of the Body and Blood of Christ as stated in the John 6 discourse we are actually turning our back on Christ?
Coincidence?
I would put forth that the book of Revelation and the mark of the beast, as well as Jesus’ rebuke of the pharisees in his “render unto caesar’s” speech all tie into the same thing. He was rebuking the pharisees because they were using money from the Roman Empire which worshipped the emperor as God. They were doing money changing in the Temple which contained the face of a false God. Also, we must remember that when the Jews said “we have no King but Caesar”, they were essentially worshipping him because they were assenting to his laws which required them to worship him as their God. All of this Dispensationalist stuff was created to scare unchatecised Catholics out of their Faith. Prophecy doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been fulfilled or that it isn’t being fulfilled, I would put forward that the “New Jerusalem” that was coming out of the Heavens referred specifically to the Church in Heaven meeting the Church on Earth. I also believe that the “one thousand year reign of Christ,” specifically refers to the Church and is symbolic as well.Coincidence? Yep probably.
The only problem with this is the numbering of verses is a modern conception. Manuscripts themselves never had a numbering system, they read straight through. This projects onto the manuscripts something that was not originally there.
Revelation has 3 aspects. It is liturgical, it is resistance material, and it is prophetic. It contrasts worship of man (in this case the ceasers, 666 being Nero-nrwn qsr-(666) or nrw qsr (616) which are both found in early manuscripts. Transliterated into hebrew they both spell out Nero.) and worship of the one true God, the church in heaven and on earth reflecting the same worship.
It is also resistance material for christians being persecuted at the time, being forced to worship the emperors (martyrs sacrificed their lives because of this) John is telling them to hold fast and not submit. The book has to have relevance to the first century christian or it is pointless. Every prophetic book has this aspect, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekial, Danial etc. If it means nothing to the people of the time it has zero relevance to their understanding of God in their lives and his wishes for them at the time. And they have to be able to understand it’s symbolic language.
It is also prophetic telling about the end time. However we are going to have many antichrists throughout salvation history. There will be one big one, this concurs with the gospel accounts Christ gives. Yet if any of the accounts in the gospels are taken out of context with regard to Johns revelation then one or the other is in error, or we are. It’s a safe bet it is us.
To say the church hasn’t taught on this is incorrect. The church is amilenialist. We are just waiting for Christ to come.
Here is something interesting, Jesus name adds up to 888, any guess what day Christ rose from the dead? The number 7 is a perfect number in the bible, the number 6 is an imperfect number (i.e. man placing himself above God, or calling himself God) We are all in a sense 6’s, Christ lowered himself to humanity that we may rise to share in His divinity, bringing us to perfection because we are incapable of it on our own.
Right now we are about at chapter 20 in revelation, just waiting for the end to come. If any of the bits and pieces we like to look at in revelation contradict that which Christ states in the gospels, it is our error, nor scriptures.
Here is another modern mark of the beast, this one pretty real if you are really looking for this kind of stuff, in the sense that anyone can fall into it. George Washingtons picture (or Lincolns or Frankilins etc.) is a mark of the beast because idolatry is worshiping something that isn’t God. How many persue money in this country, how much emphasis do we place on it? Can’t buy or sell without it. Even with credit cards or checks, you still need the monetary amount from your paycheck to cover those bills. Nero’s picture was on all the money of the roman empire. To quote a phrase “It’s all about the Benjamins”

Nicene said:Which is interesting considering a dispensationalist point of view. In catholic belief Christ is already reigning in heaven and on earth, he defeated satan by His resurrection. So we are already in the thousand year riegn of Christ, just waiting for His coming a second time. Yet for the other view to be true, inherantly it says Christ can’t be reigning on earth i.e. He didn’t defeat satan.
Semper, I notice you are from Denver:. I go to Our Lady of Loretto in Foxfield.

As stated also in the Bible that A day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like a day. The 1000 year reign of christ could just be 1 day in length to allow the gathering and judging of all.I also believe that the “one thousand year reign of Christ,” specifically refers to the Church and is symbolic as well.
Also it gives the measurements of the New Jerusalem as being 1000 cubits by 1000 cubits by 1000 cubits. The 1000 number could just symbolic of infiniteness. IE The reign of Christ will be Infinite and the New Jerusalem will be Infinite.Very good point during the closing chapters of Revelation it has Christ brining down the New Jerusalem to earth. Ergo he’s bringing down his kingdom to earth it makes the whole millinium finally make sense and this is what Augustine and Origen before him were getting at, its not as difficult as dispensationlist are making it out to be. They have made eschatology far more complicated and convuluted they have an entire thelogy invested into their eschatology that is why they spend in extraordinary amount of time on this subject, so much that that they are really not earthly good, heck if they thought abut their fellow man as they think about eschatology they would do more good than the Missionaries of Charity with Mother Teressa at the helm but instead they sure waste a lot of time arguing over stupidity.
]On the Catechising of the Uninstructed
Sorry for the diatribe, I just feel there is more to Revelation than preterist, amill, coded-comfort.Approved Catholic mystics (Venerables, Blessed and Saints, approved apparitions) throw considerable light on this order, by prophesying a minor apostasy and tribulation toward the end of the world, after which will occur the reunion of Christians. Only later will the entire world fall away from Christ (the great apostasy) and the personal Antichrist arise and the Tribulation of the End occur.
Although this is not Catholic doctrine, arising as it does from private revelation, it conforms to what is occurring in our time, especially in light of Our Lady of Fátima’s promise of an “Era of Peace.” This “Triumph of the Immaculate Heart” (other saints have spoken of a social reign of Jesus Christ when Jesus will reign in the hearts of men) would seem to occur prior to the rise of the Antichrist. The optimism of the Pope for the “New Evangelization” and a “Civilization of Love” in the Third Millennium of Christianity fits here, as well. This would place us, therefore, in the period just before the events spoken of in the Catechism, that is, on the verge of the evangelization of the entire world. Other interpretations are possible, but none seem to fit the facts as well, especially when approved mystics are studied, instead of merely alleged ones.
Never said there weren’t, but these are the main themes.I would like to suggest that there are other layers of meaning possible:
Don’t disagree, shortened it to antichrists throughout history, which infers tribulation in the church. However I wasn’t attempting to disect all of revelation in my post. The thread pertains to the “Mark of the beast”I. Idealism: a metaphor for the constant trial and tribulation the Church goes through over and over again in her history, as well as deep spiritual metaphors that are linked to Genesis and types of things that occur over the whole of Salvation history, including the OT.
In a braod sense yes. It applies to all centuries of christians which does not exclude first century christians, it’s primary audience, particularly asia minor.II. Historicism: a prophetic outline of the spiritual ages of the ENTIRE history of the Church, from pagan Rome to the AntiChirst.
see the catechism below # 676I. Some ECF’s who are, according to Father Iannuzzi (who writes on the Millennium), falsely accused of being chiliasts, actually discuss THREE (not two) ages of the New Covenant: the age of the Church, the age of the Millennium (Sabbath-“like” Rest) and the New Creation (the “true” Sabbath)
While I appreciate the use of the word “testifying” it implies this is the universal belief of the church, when in fact it was and is not.St. Augustine elaborates, testifying to the five ages of the Old Law, and associates the three ages of the Jews with the New Covenant (see the bolded text below):
Two things are glossed over here in your presentation. First as highlighed above, it is “not” catholic doctrine, Second it “is” private revelation, which is not binding as doctrine on the church. Refer to the catechism on the section referencing private revelation vs. public revelation.Although this is not Catholic doctrine, arising as it does from private revelation, it conforms to what is occurring in our time, especially in light of Our Lady of Fátima’s promise of an “Era of Peace.”
664
Being seated at the Father’s right hand signifies the inauguration of the Messiah’s kingdom, the fulfillment of the prophet Daniel’s vision concerning the Son of man: "To him was given dominion and glory and kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and LANGUAGEs should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed."547 After this event the apostles became witnesses of the "kingdom [that] will have no end."548
668
"Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living."549 Christ’s Ascension into heaven signifies his participation, in his humanity, in God’s power and authority. Jesus Christ is Lord: he possesses all power in heaven and on earth. He is “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion,” for the Father "has put all things under his feet."550 Christ is Lord of the cosmos and of history. In him human history and indeed all creation are “set forth” and transcendently fulfilled.551
cont.669
As Lord, Christ is also head of the Church, which is his Body.552 Taken up to heaven and glorified after he had thus fully accomplished his mission, Christ dwells on earth in his Church. The redemption is the source of the authority that Christ, by virtue of the Holy Spirit, exercises over the Church. “The kingdom of Christ [is] already present in mystery,” "on earth, the seed and the beginning of the kingdom."553
670
Since the Ascension God’s plan has entered into its fulfillment. We are already at "the last hour."554 "Already the final age of the world is with us, and the renewal of the world is irrevocably under way; it is even now anticipated in a certain real way, for the Church on earth is endowed already with a sanctity that is real but imperfect."555 Christ’s kingdom already manifests its presence through the miraculous signs that attend its proclamation by the Church.556
671
Though already present in his Church, Christ’s reign is nevertheless yet to be fulfilled “with power and great glory” by the king’s return to earth.557 This reign is still under attack by the evil powers, even though they have been defeated definitively by Christ’s Passover.558 Until everything is subject to him, "until there be realized new heavens and a new earth in which justice dwells, the pilgrim Church, in her sacraments and institutions, which belong to this present age, carries the mark of this world which will pass, and she herself takes her place among the creatures which groan and travail yet and await the revelation of the sons of God."559 That is why Christians pray, above all in the Eucharist, to hasten Christ’s return by saying to him:560 Marana tha! "Our Lord, come!"561
672
Before his Ascension Christ affirmed that the hour had not yet come for the glorious establishment of the messianic kingdom awaited by Israel562 which, according to the prophets, was to bring all men the definitive order of justice, love, and peace.563 According to the Lord, the present time is the time of the Spirit and of witness, but also a time still marked by “distress” and the trial of evil which does not spare the Church564 and ushers in the struggles of the last days. It is a time of waiting and watching.565
675
Before Christ’s second coming the Church must pass through a final trial that will shake the faith of many believers.574 The persecution that accompanies her pilgrimage on earth575 will unveil the “mystery of iniquity” in the form of a religious deception offering men an apparent solution to their problems at the price of apostasy from the truth. The supreme religious deception is that of the Antichrist, a pseudo-messianism by which man glorifies himself in place of God and of his Messiah come in the flesh.576
676
The Antichrist’s deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatalogical judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism,577 especially the “intrinsically perverse” political form of a secular messianism.578
677
The Church will enter the glory of the kingdom only through this final Passover, when she will follow her Lord in his death and Resurrection.579 The kingdom will be fulfilled, then, not by a historic triumph of the Church through a progressive ascendancy, but only by God’s victory over the final unleashing of evil, which will cause his Bride to come down from heaven.580 God’s triumph over the revolt of evil will take the form of the Last Judgment after the final cosmic upheaval of this passing world.581
Why do you think what the church believes and teaches is coded comfort. We don’t get to escape tribulation, and there is going to be a mass apostacy. I see no coded comfort in that personally. It in fact states a hard reality that will occur, and that we are to persist and persevere until the end.Sorry for the diatribe, I just feel there is more to Revelation than preterist, amill, coded-comfort.
