The Mass is the Mass, but I Struggle with the Low Mass

Update: You guys were right.

I’m beginning to think the low mass is awesome.

Whoever said I don’t have to follow the missal page by page was right on the money. In fact, I can spend most of my time praying as most of the mass is spent on one’s knees.

And I love the prayers after the mass.

I don’t think you are correct here. Every single TLM I have watched on the internet, including FSSP instruction DVD’s, they have turned to the congregation, split their hands away from each other slightly and sung in opera ‘DOMINUUUUUUUUUS VOOOOOOO BISCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUM!’

You probably won’t find too much official on it, but the priest is supposed to keep his eyes downcast during the “Dominus Vobiscum.”

I Know of at least 3 Missa Cantate happening this month alone in my area, though sadly I cant go 😦

I look forward to my first Missa Cantate in September though 🙂
 
I do have the chance to attend a Missa Cantata tomorrow evening, is it considered a low or high Mass?

You Know I’m beggining to think it might be an idea to abandon the missal just once or twice for at least some parts of the mass, sometimes I think it can get in the way If I get lost. That might just be me though

What do you mean by “low mass?” Do you mean the Ordinary Form? Most people like it because it is easier to participate since it isn’t in Latin. What is it specifically that makes attending OF so difficult for you? How would you prefer to have it celebrated?

The EF as well as the OF come in various degrees of solemnity. When the EF is celebrated simply, without chant, it is referred to as a Low Mass. When it is celebrated with chant, it is referred to as Missa Cantata, or what used to be called the High Mass. Now the High Mass is still used to refer to a sung Mass but it’s more correct to say it’s a Solemn High Mass with a deacon, subdeacon, thurifer, master of ceremonies, and two or more candle-holders (acolytes).

Here is an example of a low mass.

Although I never hear it that well. 😛

Here is a Missa Cantata.
 
The low masses I attend are actually usually like this.

Could barely hear a thing. I’m used to them and even look forward to them now.😃
 
It sounds as if your feelings about the Low Mass are disturbing you. Why not talk to your parish priest about your issues with the Low Mass? I find that many time talking to the parish priest can be helpful. Maybe God has granted him some grace to help you sort through the problems you have with the Low Mass.
