Ben,

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting." Micah 5: 2
**That’s a prophecy for the establishment of Judah to stay forever as the sole ruler over all the Land of Israel, according to God’s promise to David. (I Kings 11:36) **
Rabbinical writings of the day (such as the Jerusalem Talmud and the Targum Palestine) understood Micah’s prophecy (which was given 700+ BC) to mean that the Messiah must come from Bethlehem.
When the 12 Tribes arrived in Canaan, Bethlehem became the capital for the province of Judah. From there came David, who became the symbol of Judah.
TALMUD YERUSHALMI states:
“…King Messiah is born…he is from the royal palace of Bethlehem Judah.”
**Right, that’s the People of Judah. **
How to Recognise the Messiah
**Not too hard. Who rules over the Land of Israel, are they not the Jews? **
And the New Testament (which we have already seen is historically accurate - see section under Archeology) testifies that Jesus was born in Bethlehem:
**And so were thousands of Jews. **
"Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
**Nevertheless, Jesus never became king of the Jews. **
