Yes, but Saint Micheal is a powerful Arch Angel and we are not. He can ‘name names’ whereas we need to ‘proceed’ with caution. I am stating what I was taught and not advocating what you should go by. Peace.
 
I should also point out that some Bible translations read, in the Lord’s Prayer: “Deliver us from the evil one.”
If I’m not mistaken, this is also how the Eastern Orthodox recite the Lord’s Prayer.

Just saying that the idea that naming the devil increases his power over us is superstition, not doctrine.
And pretending that he can’t harm us is not Catholic dogma. I don’t know what it is. Something New Age-y, I guess. I realize you’re not saying that he can’t harm us. But we see the evidence of his actions all around us–the destruction of marriage and God’s plan for humanity, the slaughter of the innocents, etc. I am worried, more precisely concerned, about such things. And they are directly diabolical.

“The evil one” does not name names. I am not about to spar over words or translation. he exists, he is a bad fallen angel. Note that I have not even capitalized ‘his’ presence. I only state what I have been taught.

Where did I say he doesn’t exist or cannot harm us. f course he can harm us and of course he does exist. he is alive and well. As I am not a theologian I cannot argue dogma.

I agree–good!
Just pointing out that saying his name doesn’t have some summoning effect, unless it’s intended to. If it’s used in context of some Satanic ritual, of course that’s a whole 'nother thing. But just because we say his name in prayer, as we do in the St. Michael prayer, or even in the context of speaking about his influence and his works in the world, doesn’t give him power over us. Quite the opposite, I’d say. And I’d argue that every time we speak of abortion, same sex “marriages,” mass shootings, manipulated or forced euthanasia, and other crimes and abominations it’s appropriate to speak of the devil. Does that make sense?

You know I am probably far older than you and dogma really wasn’t taught when I was ‘coming up.’ I do the best with what I have, as I can, as my parents taught me. My father was raised by a good Catholic family but my mother was beaten by her stepfather just about daily with horse harness…and he was a minister. She had the scars across he back to prove it. So if they were slightly superstitious about the devil than I think they did OK. I think I just told you more than you have the right to know. And that is it in a lump sum.
 
“Modern” devil? We can address only man’s “modern” response to his existence. He is quite ancient, quite brilliant, but also quite limited in time and quite blinded by vanity. Yet, due to our concupiscence, we still succumb to his leading.

Yikes! Well, it was all truly charming except for the horse harness part.
I got the belt occasionally, or a willow switch. No scarring, though.
 
Older than I am? Maybe…or maybe not.😉 But I won’t ask you to divulge age because that–would not be gentlemanly. Besides, then I’d feel obligated to divulge mine.

Dating myself right there, with “gentlemanly.” Who uses words that that anymore? More importantly, who teaches such behaviour? More’s the pity.

p.s. I like the French expression: “d’un certain age.” Works for me.

There is a “Church of Satan” and those who believe the devil is a better choice than God are also operating under a number of different labels and guises. Demonic possession is very real. It appears to me a contradiction to not follow God but to follow another supernatural being instead. He goes under different names in the Bible as well. False teachers are working very hard to promote satanism and the closely linked New Age. It’s a new label for what used to be called Occult, along with relabeling demonic entities using ‘they will help you and guide you’ terms. The terms are new but the goal is the same. Everyone wants some kind of answer or wish granted. There is only one narrow, straight path, while the road to destruction is wide.

Put your faith in God. Doing it the other way leads to bad results. That an illegal drug makes you feel good for a while means your mind and body will see it, and possibly other drugs, as answers. Some fortune-teller might make you feel good - for a while - but that’s not a solution either, not counting the money you paid. Allegedly “real” spells or charms and other things are just crystal or wood or stone that have no actual abilities to do anything. The mind and body become slowly disconnected from God.

But He is always there for if you need Him.

No, I wasn’t forced to divulge anything, but hoping that Rosarypoet would take a second look at my background and not have that tendency or judgment to call others superstitious.
 
I don’t worry about the devil at all. I am concerned about my own weaknesses and that is enough.
