Great news! I look forward to hearing who it is.

Popular gossip has been saying for a while that Bishop Philip Tartaglia (of Paisley) will take over. I think he would be a good choice, but then there have been some perhaps surprising (in a good way) appointments in England recently, so a “dark horse” (!) wouldn’t surprise me.

Archbishop Philip Tartaglia has been named today - as was largely expected 🙂
Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Bishop Philip Tartaglia (until now
Bishop of Paisley) as Archbishop of Glasgow. The new Archbishop will succeed Most Rev Mario Joseph Conti, who has been Archbishop since 22 February 2002.
Commenting on the appointment, the new Archbishop-Elect said: “I am conscious of the historic place of the Archdiocese of Glasgow in the history of Christianity in Scotland and of its importance for the
Catholic community in particular. It is a great honour for me to be
appointed Archbishop of my native city and diocese.”
Bishop Tartaglia said he had been “very happy and fulfilled” as Bishop of Paisley where he has served since late 2005. He added: “I have loved my diocese. The priests and people of the Diocese of Paisley will always be in my heart. And I would want to serve the Archdiocese of Glasgow with the same affection and devotion.”
The Archbishop-elect said: “I know I can only be a good bishop with help from above, so I ask everyone to pray for me.”
Archbishop Conti said: “I am delighted that the Holy Father has
appointed Bishop Philip as my successor. I have known him for more than 30 years and I have the greatest admiration for his gifts of leadership, intelligence and pastoral sensitivity. The Archdiocese will be in very good hands. I hope to remain of service to the people of the Archdiocese and I will place myself at the service of my successor to assist him in whatever way he may wish in the life of the Church in Glasgow.”
The new Archbishop will take possession of the Archdiocese on September 8, Feast day of the Nativity of Our Lady.

Archbishop-elect Tartaglia was ordained a priest in 1975 and became a bishop in 2005. He is a native of Glasgow
He grew up just a short walk from the Cathedral (St Andrews) which is now his Episcopal seat. St Andrews Cathedral is notable for being the 1st Catholic Church built in Scotland following the reformation.

I learned today that one of his brothers is a priest in his former diocese (Paisley).

From what I have seen, Bishop Tartaglia is a good, orthodox Bishop. He is outspoken, but in an intelligent and considered way. Recently, he has made useful public comments on same-sex marriage and “sectarianism” (which is the term which Scots use to disguise their anti-Catholicism lol). He is good at making Scottish politicians look like fools, (which isn’t that hard, right enough), by posing innocent- and obvious-seeming questions which highlight their many flaws.

However, there is a group of local traditionalists who attack him, saying he is unfriendly to the latin mass. Hopefully, that may change (if its true), though I do note he was ordained after the novus ordo came in. See catholictruthscotland.com/
The BBC identifies him as “a leading opponent of proposals to legalise same-sex marriage in Scotland.”
Typical of the BBC to introduce their own agenda into the news!

Anyway, you’d think the fact he is a Catholic Bishop would mean that went without saying! lol

Other than a few rumblings relating to the TLM and his interpretation of Summorum Pontificum, he seems to be a solid, orthodox Catholic that refuses to bow down to politico-cultural pressure.

I say this as I noticed the Daily Mail has already attempted to ever-so-blatantly brand him an archaic homophobe via this dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2178762/Archbishop-Philip-Tartaglia-suggests-MP-David-Cairns-died-44-gay.html article.

Note his comments at the end of the article though:
With the Catholic Church strongly opposed to same-sex marriage, Archbishop-elect Tartaglia said yesterday that he would continue to defend his position on the issue.
‘I don’t get involved in politics for politics’ sake,’ he said.
‘It’s to do with issues which affect human life and flourishing.’
