semantics semantics semantics. You said God permits bad Popes for the good of the Church. I don’t buy that. I dont think God permits bad popes IN ORDER to bring about good. But rather good can come from God in any circumstance no matter how bad man messes it up. That does not mean that thousands of souls could not be lost. That certainly would not be God’s will.
What you are saying would have to logically apply to other situations. I dont think God permits a rape so that a certain good child can be born but rather God can bring a good child out of a rape. It is a fine distinction to say God permits something when really the only way God permits evil is by giving us free will. Technically God’s method of permitting evil is through our own free will. We are the ones who screw up.

God wills that everyone be saved. But everyone is not. Those who are not saved and are damned are not damned so that God could bring about good. That would make no sense.

hmmmm well, If he ok’d the use of condoms even in dire circumstances I think society would run with it. If he was hostile to traditional things. If he was “progressive”. If he ignored the liturgy. If he appointed “progressive” cardinals and Bishops. If he was weak. If he was not a true “leader”. If he did not fight tooth and nail for traditional marriage.

Personally I like shorter pontificates.
I remember 8 years ago and I dont remember being so apprehensive about the next pope. I am a little apprehensive now.

I told my wife the other day that I wished it was 2 years from now. Because until we elect a new Pope the media will be all over with it’s own agenda and after we elect a new Pope people will conjecture what he will do. Any sentence he ever uttered that “progressives” can grab onto for their cause will be exploited for their own purpose. 2 years from now we will have a good grasp of the next pontificate. I just wish I didn’t have to go through the next 2 years…

I agree with you, Moore. It will be some time before everything is back to normal (whatever that is anymore ).

I read somewhere on here yesterday that even though the Holy Spirit should inspire the cardinals, that doesn’t mean that they will listen to Him.

Now, that’s a scary thought.

Well, if Jesus could pick Judas as one of His followers, I guess the Holy Spirit could, for whatever His reasons, permit a bad Pope to be picked. It is not without precedent.

And what exactly would a Pope have to do to be considered unholy? Whose standards would he have to meet? How would that be defined, objectively, without taking into account one’s personal predjudices or making rash judgments? There is lot to consider when such a question is asked.

But the Church will survive, no matter what. Even the gates of hell will not prevail against it.
I think people need to trust a little more, maybe.

We have been blessed to have amazing Popes in our lifetimes. Holy Holy men. What if the next Pope is not as Holy? What would you do? What could he change that would make you freak out?

It would not be the first time the Church had a substandard or scandalous Pope.

I would go to Mass and pray.

I don’t think I would get freaked out no matter what he did. He sure couldn’t do much worse than some of the previous Popes have done.
