The Qur’an does not say that Mary is part of the Trinity.

Some people (Muslims, and Catholics even) have mistakenly drawn that interpretation out. Muslims because they weren’t educated about Trinity, and Catholics because they weren’t educated about Islam. It’s just a mistake.

According to the Muslim definition of ‘worship’ Catholics do in fact ‘worship’ Mary, so the Qur’an is correct in implying that they do, even though Catholics don’t consider that they are worshiping Mary when they pray to her, or with her, or revere her, or any other term that might be used.

However, the Trinity is not called Father, Son, and Mary. Not at all.

If you don’t think Mary is a goddess beside God, then just say so, and that you agree with the Qur’an when it says that Jesus never told the people to take Mary as a goddess, or to worship her. 👍

Amy,

Mary is a created being. God is uncreated being.

Mary is exalted by God and given great honor. We honor her also, as a creature, not as God, who is uncreated. Since God and Mary are different the honor given them is different.

Do you honor Mohamed? Muslims honor their prophet and are ready to kill people they see dishonoring him. Why not just say no to giving Mohamend respect or honor as a prophet since he is not God?

I honor Muhammad by honoring his religion–that is, by following Islam. Killing people does not honor Islam. Praying to Muhammad does not honor Islam. In fact doing much of anything for Muhammad doesn’t really honor Islam. (if I were to pray to him I would be dishonoring Islam, violating its major tenets.)

I do it for the God of Muhammad, the God of Jesus, the God of Mary, the God of Abraham, exalted is He and deserving of all praise and worship.

I. Killing people does not honor Islam.

.
Mohamed called for killing people. Does a Mulsim suicide bomber honor Islam? Who decides in Islam whether this is a thing that honors God or is evil? Which Imam knows the truth of the matter?

Forget those violence verses of Quran?what ever:shrug:.anyway I also Honor Lord Jesus by worshiping him. He(Jesus)is my God forever and only the true God,THE WAY.

Haven’t Popes called for “killing people?” Doesn’t the Old Testament call for “killing people?” In war! For justice! Not just killing random people. But let’s just settle on Moses–he apparently called for killing (in the Torah) and wasn’t any less of a prophet because of it, right?

A suicide bomber does not honor Islam, because suicide is forbidden, as is killing women, children, and eldery people (any non-combatants.)

The Shari’ah believe it or not is pretty specific about things which are forbidden (like suicide bombing) and things which honor Islam (like prayer and charity.)

The Qur’an does not say that Mary is part of the Trinity.

we shall see the ayas

They indeed have disbelieved who say: Lo! Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. Say: Who then can do aught against Allah, if He had willed to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, **and his mother **and everyone on earth?

the aya is refuting Mary’s divinity…it has nothing to do with “reverance” since the Quran itself gives her titles of honour.

They are unbelievers who say, ‘God is the Messiah, Mary’s son.’ For the Messiah said, ‘Children of Israel, serve God, my Lord and your Lord. Verily whoso associates with God anything, God shall prohibit him entrance to Paradise, and his refuge shall be the Fire; and wrongdoers shall have no helpers.’ They are unbelievers who say, 'God is the Third of Three (thalithu thalathatin). No god is there but One God. If they refrain not from what they say, there shall afflict those of them that disbelieve a painful chastisement. Will they not turn to God and pray His forgiveness? God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate. The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a Messenger; Messengers before him passed away; his mother was a just woman; they **both **ate food. Behold, how We make clear the signs to them; then behold, how they perverted are! S. 5:70-75

Again, including Mary and refuting her divinity alongside with Jesus because they used to EAT. Nothing about “reverence”. Besides, what kind of a refutation is this? eating food?

And when God said, ‘O Jesus son of Mary, didst thou say unto men, “Take me and my mother as gods, apart from God”?’

THIRD AYA talking about Mary and her divinity. For the third time, it is not about “reverance” since we surely do not “revere” but worship Jesus so both cannot be put under the same umbrella as the Quran did for 3 ayas.

So it is not mistaken Muslims and Catholics, but confused author. Since we are talking about God, the All-knowing, mentioning Mary on the same level with Jesus is a huge error, not to mention that one correct aya of Father, Word, Spirit should be formulated instead of 3 ayas mentioning Mary.
According to the Muslim definition of ‘worship’ Catholics do in fact ‘worship’ Mary, so the Qur’an is correct in implying that they do,

Some people (Muslims, and Catholics even) have mistakenly drawn that interpretation out. Muslims because they weren’t educated about Trinity, and Catholics because they weren’t educated about Islam. It’s just a mistake.
This argument of yours makes no sense since the Koran always denies the divinity of Jesus AND Mary whenever it denies the Trinity! If the authors of the Koran had not mistakenly considered Mary the second person of the Trinity, they would never have needed to associate Mary’s divinity (which is not a Christian tenet!) with the Holy Trinity (which IS a Christian tenet).
According to the Muslim definition of ‘worship’ Catholics do in fact ‘worship’ Mary, so the Qur’an is correct in implying that they do, even though Catholics don’t consider that they are worshiping Mary when they pray to her, or with her, or revere her, or any other term that might be used.
According to my definition of “worship”, Muslims make Mohammad a partner to Allah because they revere him. Do you think I should claim that Mohammad’s divinity is an essential tenet of Islam?

Likewise, the Koran always makes Mary a partner to Jesus’ honorary titles and includes Mary into its peculiar pattern that designates prophets (especially in Surah 19). Should I conclude that Mary is the only Islamic prophetess?

The Koran has no right to present its interpretation of Mary’s status and role in Christianity as the essential Christian tenet. Your scripture also claims that Christians “worship” priests (clergy), but it neither makes Jesus refute the authority of the clergy nor includes the clergy into the Christian Trinity. Despite this claim, why do you think the Koran insists on denying the Trinity instead of accusing Christians of worshipping a Quartet?
However, the Trinity is not called Father, Son, and Mary. Not at all.

If you don’t think Mary is a goddess beside God, then just say so, and that you agree with the Qur’an when it says that Jesus never told the people to take Mary as a goddess, or to worship her. 👍
According to your reasoning, the Koran also never denies the Christian Trinity. There is not a single verse in the Koran that says the Holy Spirit is not God. This means your book endorses the divinity of the Holy Spirit and asks Christians to keep faithful to the original Trinity taught in the New Testament. 👍

According to the Muslim definition of ‘worship’ Catholics do in fact ‘worship’ Mary:
the following aya is blasphemy:

‘If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your clan, your possessions that you have gained, commerce you fear may slacken, dwellings you love – if these are dearer to you than God AND His Messenger, and to struggle in His way, then wait till God brings His command; God guides not the people of the ungodly.’

O you who believe! Respond to Allah, AND to the Messenger, when He calls you to what will bring you to life! Know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that you will be gathered to Him." (8:24)

Putting Allah and Muhammad on the same level, just like you put the names of Allah and Muhammad on the same level on your mosques.

Narrated Abu Said bin Al-Mu’alla:
While I was praying in the Mosque, Allah’s Apostle called me but I did not respond to him. Later I said, “O Allah’s Apostle! I was praying.” He said, “Didn’t Allah say—‘Give your response to Allah (by obeying Him) and to His Apostle when he calls you?’” (8.24) … (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 1)

leave your prayers and obey me since it is obeying Allah.

And don’t you say in your tashahhud, assalam alayka ayyuha rasul?

why are you adressing a dead man?

Is that related? Hmm… I don’t think so.

Is Mary divine? Yes or no? Of course the answer is no. So the Qur’an says Mary is not divine. Khalas.

And no I actually don’t say that in my prayers, I say As-salaam 3ala an-Nabiyy wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Peace be upon the Prophet… so I’m not addressing a dead man. And I do that based on the ijtihad of Ibn Mas’ud who said:

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) taught me the tashahhud with my hand between his hands, just as he taught me a soorah from the Qur’aan: “Al-tahiyyaatu Lillaahi wa’l-salawaatu wa’l-tayyibaat al-salaamu ‘alayka ayyuha’l-nabiyyu… (All compliments, prayers and good words are for Allaah, peace be upon you, O Prophet…).” (That was) when he was still among us. When he passed away, we started to say, “al-salaam ‘ala al-nabi (peace be upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)).”

For those who say “as-salaamu 3alayk ayyuha nabi…” or whatever they say, there is a justification for that and an explanation that it is not ‘calling on a dead man’ as you said. Islamqa has an explanation of it on their site if you wish to look it up.

There is absolutely no justification for putting Muhammad at the level of divinity or at the level of Allah SWT, and I know you really had to dig and convolute ayahs to get that impression.

Simply 18:110

Say, “I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone.”

This is NOT what we are discussing. Refuting Mary’s divinity is NOT the same as claiming that Mary is the second person of the Christian Trinity. Please re-read my post and give me better answers.

You Muslims always deny history, play with words and concepts, and fabricate stories to defend your scripture and justify its mistaken suppositions. What if we once imitate you and apply the same principle to your tenets? It is high time you Muslims were acquainted with the notion of justice.

Your Koran contradicts itself as usual. The following verses cry out that Mohammad is not an ordinary person, but one equal to Allah:

Surah 49:1-2
O ye who believe! Be not forward **in the presence of Allah and **His messenger, and keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower. O ye who believe! Lift not up your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor shout when speaking to him as ye shout one to another, lest your works be rendered vain while ye perceive not.

Let us dissecrt just this aya to see the confusion of the author:
They are unbelievers who say, ‘God is the Messiah, Mary’s son.’
wrong to start with. If Allah means Father, then we do not say the Father is Jesus. If Allah means Trinity , again it is wong because the Trinity is not Jesus.
For the Messiah said, ‘Children of Israel, serve God, my Lord and your Lord. Verily whoso associates with God anything, God shall prohibit him entrance to Paradise, and his refuge shall be the Fire; and wrongdoers shall have no helpers.’
partners? The Trinity is not about partners. Wisdom and Spirit are not partners unless Allah wants to reveal that he is wisdomless and spiritless.
They are unbelievers who say, 'God is the Third of Three (thalithu thalathatin). No god is there but One God.
the Trinity is not about 3 gods. It is about the One God.
If they refrain not from what they say, there shall afflict those of them that disbelieve a painful chastisement. Will they not turn to God and pray His forgiveness? God is All-forgiving, All-compassionate. The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a Messenger; Messengers before him passed away;
yet Muslims believe He’s been living for more than 2000 years to come and die later even though the aya speaks about Him as all messengers who normally died, but whatever…clear book anyway…
his mother was a just woman; they both ate food.
of course they both ate food. The author is refuting Mary’s divinity, fine, but he is putting Mary and Jesus on the same level of divinity, which is wrong. Besides, saying that Jesus used to eat food is by no means a refutation to His divinity but an affirmation to His humanity, something we did extensively when heretics claimed He is only divine…so telling us that Jesus ate food therefore is not divine begs the question if the author understood what he is talking about since we all know and believe that He is a true human, not in appearance…add to it that eating food does not deny divinity just as speaking in human language does not stop God from being God.
Behold, how We make clear the signs to them; then behold, how they perverted are!
in fact, you bewildered the heck out of Muslims and we have to keep correcting what you told them, and you proved beyond a doubt that you did not even come close to Christian theology.

“God is but One God; utterly remote is He, in His glory, from having a son”

If the author understood the title Son as Logos, then why would the author claim that Allah is scandalized with the idea of Him having Wisdom? clearly the author understood it physically, which explains why he is scandalized. Again, he did not even come close to Christian theology of the NT.

When one claims that the author is God, and these are his literal words, one will expect amazingly correct theology, not confusion, the confusion that all Muslims share from reading these words, that is why they come telling us Mary is not divine, Mary is not part of Trinity and keep quoting to us that God does not have a wife nor does he have a son.

Christians often accuse Muslims of not even knowing what the Trinity is, pointing out that the Qur’an sets it up as Allah the Father, Jesus the Son, and Mary his mother. While veneration of Mary has been a figment of the Catholic Church since 431 when she was given the title “Mother of God” by the Council of Ephesus, a closer examination of the verse in the Qur’an (5:116) most often cited by Christians in support of their accusation, shows that the designation of Mary by the Qur’an as a “member” of the Trinity, is simply not true.

While the Qur’an does condemn both trinitarianism (the Qur’an 4:17) and the worship of Jesus and his mother Mary (the Qur’an 5:116), nowhere does it identify the actual three components of the Christian Trinity. The position of the Qur’an is that WHO or WHAT comprises this doctrine is not important; what is important is that the very notion of a Trinity is an affront against the concept of One God.

The following is an excerpt from a webpage:

a) The word “Trinity” appears in the Holy Qur’an in verses 4:171 and 5:73. In these two verses the name of Mary is not mentioned as “the third Person of the Holy Trinity”. Not withstanding that as an argument, here are the observed facts.

b) The carved or molten images and/or statues of Jesus Christ and his mother Mary, in various sizes and shapes, are to be found in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, all around the world.

c) Most of these Sacred Statues or Images are placed in the prominent places of the Prayer Halls of these Christian Churches for the purpose of venerating and worshipping of these entities.

d) One would also notice that the majority of the attending congregates would kneel, worship, venerate and pray before these Holy Images as their reverent rituals and inherited traditions. Many devoted believers would place lighted candles in front of these Sacred Statues or Images before worshipping or paying their homage to them.

e) These Catholic and Orthodox congregates who venerate Lord Jesus as their God and Virgin Mary as the “Mother of God”, do form the bulk of the Christians community. It has been so since the inception of the Roman Catholic Church. The Protestants, who separated from the Roman Catholics, nearly ten centuries after the advent of Islam, do not have the Statues of Mother Mary in their Churches.

f) In 1998, according to the Encyclopedia Britannia there were 1040 million Catholics and only 361 million Protestants.

g) These observations clearly indicate that Virgin Mary has been venerated with hyperdulia, along with her son Jesus, by the majority of the Christians, from the early years of the Catholicism.

h) As for the Holy Ghost, the third person of the Holy Trinity, no Christian Church has so far instituted its venerating representation, image or semblance for their Churchgoers.

The popes are not the founders of the Christian religion. They are followers. As there are good and bad Muslims there are good and bad Christians. There were wicked popes, men who did evil things, as well as holy popes. Some wars are just, but using warfare to expand a religion is always unjust and evil. The founder of the Christian religion taught us to love our enemies. He did not command that armies be raised to fight wars. He lived a celibate life. He did not have sex with a little girl and serial wives. Jesus behavior was exemplary. Mohamed’s was evil. I don’t say that to make you angry or offend you. If you wish to engage Christians in dialogue this is what they look at, how they evaluate Islam, by the examples given by its founder compared to the witness of the life Christ. Muslims can defend Mohamed’s behavior, but Christians will not accept it. There is no moral defense for an old man, the founder of your religion having sexual relations with a child. Mohamed is dead. Christ is alive. Even Muslims believe Jesus is alive. Mohamed who is the self provclaimed greatest of all prophets is dead. His bones rot in a grave. Jesus lives.

It IS true as my previous post has already highlighted. You again fail to see that the title “Mother of God” used for Mary does not make Mary the second person of the Trinity. The Koran is erroneous because the Church never teaches that Mary is a goddess or that her being the Mother of God pertains to her divinity. It is still unreasonable that the Koran assimilate the Holy Spirit from the Christian Trinity by replacing Him with Mary because of a title given to her. The mistake is still there in your book 😉
First, Christianity does not worship Mary. This is an erroneous assumption that is directly associated with the other mistaken claim of the writers of the Koran, who conveyed a sexual/physical meaning to the title “Son of God” used by Christians to define Jesus. Mary’s inclusion into the Trinity is a consequence of this misinterpretation and the conceptualization of the Trinity as a family consisting of male and female deities.

The Islamic scripture actually presents the components of the Holy Trinity:

Surah 5:73-75
They surely disbelieve who say: Lo! Allah is the third of three; when there is no God save the One God. If they desist not from so saying a painful doom will fall on those of them who disbelieve. Will they not rather turn unto Allah and seek forgiveness of Him ? For Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. The Messiah, son of Mary, was no other than a messenger, messengers (the like of whom) had passed away before him. And his mother was a saintly woman. And they both used to eat (earthly) food. See how We make the revelations clear for them, and see how they are turned away!

It is by no means a coincidence that the Koran refute the Trinity and divinity of Jesus AND Mary in the same place and context. Besides, in another verse of the Koran Allah supposedly makes Jesus deny His own divinity and His mother’s divinity at the same time:

Surah 5:116
And when Allah saith: O Jesus, son of Mary! Didst thou say unto mankind: Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah ?

This verse clearly states that Christians believe Jesus and Mary to be TWO gods in addition to Allah. TWO GODS+ ALLAH: THREE GODS. (Supposed Trinity of Christianity).

The Koran strikingly rebuts the arguments stated in this excerpt, for it never formulates or defines the Trinity on the basis of the statues or icons of Jesus or Virgin Mary. There is not a single verse in the Koran that defines the Christian veneration of icons/statues as idolatry either. If this supposition were true, the Koran would have claimed that Christians did not have a Trinity, but hundreds of different gods through the veneration of several saints. Further, the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove in many churches (Statues in the west and icons/mosaics in the East). In short, this excerpt must have been devised by people who knew neither the Koran nor Christianity.

The obvious conclusion is that hamba2han did not study his lesson, and the course book he copied from was not accurate and reliable. 😃

Actually that is not the obvious conclusion; and your post definitely demonstrates why Christians would think Muslims do not have an understanding of the Trinity. Statues have nothing to do with worship. Sorry. They are simply reminders of those whom they depict. Bowing in reverence to a statue shouldn’t be considered worship by a religion whose followers kiss a black rock.

To imply that the Holy Spirit does not rank in status because of the lack of statues depicting Him is grossly ignorant of Christian teaching. The Holy Spirit of God is, was, and always will be Divine. You failed to mention that there aren’t statues of the Father either, do you suppose that He is not worshipped because there are not any statues depicting Him? It isn’t because the Father and His Holy Spirit are not worshipped that they do not have statues. It is that they never had flesh. They are pure Spirit (usually the Spirit is depicted in the form of a dove as described in scripture, but not usually made into a statue). Jesus, as well as Mary and all the Saints had fleshly bodies. That is why there are statues that depict them and not the Father and the Spirit. It has nothing to do with worship. Even statues of Jesus, who is Divine, are NOT worshipped.

By the way, bowing or kneeling are not always signs of worship. Do you worship Mecca when you bow down toward it?
