Beginning in August, the “Osservatore Romano” newspaper will be distributed in the United States of America. It will be published by the “Our Sunday Visitor” Catholic publishing house, based in Indiana, which also publishes the “Our Sunday Visitor” weekly newspaper, the largest selling Catholic periodical in the U.S.
The publishing house will also supervise the subscription service and marketing strategies to promote the circulation of the “Osservatore Romano”. Thanks to this initiative, news concerning the Pope and the Vatican will now be more accessible to families in the United States.

This change should result in more timely distribution, and increased subscriptions. The latter has been a goal of Pope Benedict.

My sense is that this new venture involves the current English language version, which is published weekly. It will not be an English language version of the daily paper, which is only available in Italian.

Our Sunday Visitor is currently accepting subscriptions to L’Osservatore Romano. The cost for 25 issues is $74.95

The first issue will be dated August 8th, 2012.

I hope the Holy See urges dioceses and parishes to market this.

This is an interesting development, in an age where paper newspapers are dead and dying. I wonder if they expect to make any profit from this. Is OSV a non-profit organization?

According to thier web site, they are a not-for-profit business. Several of their publications are available electronically, including a Kindle version of their main magazine/newsletter. L’Osservatore Romano is already listed on the web site. It looks like it is a print version only, at least for now.

This could be an effort to achieve wider distribution of the OR in all formats. Perhaps OSV has resources for digital distribution that proved attractive to Rome. Certainly, the OR has already been published in English editions for years. So this is more of a distribution deal than anything. I would be excited to see eBook versions coming out. Especially if they were provided without restrictive “Digital Rights Management”.
