One more reason why Jerusalem can never fall under Muslim control. I shudder to think of the sacrilege that would take place.

Excerpt, article in OP:
…

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has ordered the Hagia Sophia museum, one of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks, to be converted into a mosque.

He made the announcement hours after a top court cleared the way for him to make the change.

The Hagia Sophia, a major draw for tourists, has a long and complicated history. The architectural marvel was built as a church by the Byzantines in the 6th century and then converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.

In 1934, Turkish leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk’s cabinet decreed that it be turned into a museum. It is widely regarded as a symbol of peaceful religious coexistence.
It’s sad. I don’t know what can be done about this. Sounds like nothing.

Sure, a boycott could be attempted but I don’t think that’d work real well.

It is a UN historic cultural site (the exact terminology fails me)

From the article:
" What Erdogan did today is an act of naked cultural aggression."
Yes, it is true. However, I did not see where the article mentioned that in 1204, the Roman Catholic crusaders invaded and turned the Orthodox cathedral into a Roman Catholic Church until 1261?

That was about 800 years ago, forgiven if not forgotten by now.

Who among us doesn’t enjoy a nice ottoman?

Hey @JimG, can you at least pretend you don’t have an obvious agenda and actually include a discussion prompt with your threads? This is like the third one I’ve seen where all you do is just post a conservative leaning article.

You know, if the US withdrew from NATO, the Ruskies would fix that problem pretty quick.
I never thought about that, but probably you are correct.
Yeah, when the Ruskies threaten to invade you, they’re probably already there just with their patches off - a la Crimea.

It might be wrong of me to say, but I’d like to see Erdogan use some of his hyper-aggressive posturing without being behind the shield of NATO. I’d bet my investment accounts and house that the next day there wouldn’t be a single boat in Sevastopol.

Before Russian-American animosity bloomed post WW2 the primary recipient of their historical bellicose rhetoric would be our dear Turks.

the Roman Catholic crusaders
Please stop propagating the myth that the sack of Constantinople was an act of the Catholic Church.

As soon as the crusaders diverted from their course, they were excommunicated and were thus simply renegades.

By the way, let it not be forgotten that it was at the instigation and invitation of one of the Byzantine court factions that the Crusaders changed course for Constantinople

Your ottoman is way nicer than mine, Meinheimer.

Although we did just get a new ottoman, google images was my friend in this case.

I wouldn’t be so sure.

The Russians have twice the men and three times the budget and almost five times the aircraft.

“Turkey shoot” would likely describe the action.

Thank God for NATO, eh Recep?

That’s true.

I found the Soviet/Russian aircraft design philosophy to be interesting. America wants a top-tech air superiority fighter with no peer… that can’t take a hit. There’s so much delicate hardware in an F-35 that a stray AA round would likely cripple it.

The old MiGs, on the other hand, were designed for battle-hardiness. There was one class of them specifically designed to be able to belly-land if the landing gear was damaged. It could then be reflown with minimal repairs.

Their naval philosophy is also interesting. While Americans went with carriers, Ruskies went with missile frigates. The argument being, why make a super expensive carrier requiring a uniquely purpose-designed class of aircraft so you can fly said aircraft and then launch your missile or drop your bomb?

Why not just make a missile with better fuel capacity and range and launch it directly from a boat that is much cheaper to build?

It’s a pity but I don’t think we can dictate terms, the Holy Father said it pained him.

If Turkey had a change of leadership and they went back to the more secular government as Ataturk envisioned, maybe then, we could see a process of changes.

A lot of Turks want that “secular” society.

Right, Hagia Sophia is pretty entrenched in Turkish territory. If it was ever taken back, we’d (the West) would probably be defending it for lifetimes.

The Russian pilots are so macho they probably prefer to belly land their fighter planes.

Well, if you look at turkey on a map, the Hagia Sophia is in Istanbul which is a little blob of Turkish land on the European side of the Bosphorus. 97% of Turkey is in Asia across a waterway.
As far as defensible positions go, you can do much worse.

😂 😂 😂

I think “cocky” and “pilot” are fairly universal synonyms.
