"The Passion" pretty much ignored by Oscars

Not too surprising, but the Oscar nominations were released today & “The Passion of the Christ” was almost totally ignored, while “Kinsey” and the English film about the abortionist housewife were rewarded. I believe the only nominations were for cinematography, makeup, & costume - it didn’t get a single nomination in any of the major categories. Personally, I’m very disappointed but at the same time not surprised at all. Gibson exposed the utter hypocrisy of the Hollywood establishment & now that all the awards are coming out, they’re getting their revenge. Granted, it probably came out too early (the major contenders seem to be released as close as possible to the Oscars date), but I think something else is at work.

Maybe I’m too cynical about popular culture. Anyone else?

Jesus said “go and make disciples of all nations”, not “go and win academy awards”. I think Mel Gibson had the former in mind when making this movie. From what I heard, he did not set up an Oscar “campaign” like many other movies have, so to even get two might actually be a surprise.

It was nominated for Musical Score and Make up. But that’s two more than Michael Moore, so I’m content. I didn’t have any expectations that the Academy would reward this film. But I FEARED that they would embrace the other movie, but thankfully they did not.

So who will boycott the show, and let them know they did?

I plan to do exactly that.

Considering it’s during lent, we could all watch our DVD"s of the Passion that night instead.

I am more disappointed that “Vera Drake” (about a “kindly” woman who helped poor women in England get illegal abortions in the 1950s) got three nominations.

I had never heard of that movie, but yea, that sounds like a movie that the Academy would love.

Mel Gibson vowed that he would not politic or do any marketing for the movie to get any nomination. Nothing.

Did that hurt him?? No a** kissing?? Maybe. I don’t think so.

Not even ONE major nomination??? Not even for Jim Caveizel???

Hollywood just proved that they would rather cut off their nose to spite their face…AGAIN.

It proves to me once again that Hollywood, who usually will do almost anything for a buck, would rather lose money, lose respect, lose audiences than give any positive feedback to anything Christian. Oh, and certainly not Catholic!!

You just might be on to something here, what if we could get the big RTL groups to promote a boycott, and get a few news stories going, maybe, just maybe we could finally start to get the “left coasts” attention. Now here’s the zinger, we don’t boycott because the Passion didn’t get any major nonminations, we boycott over the nomminations given to Vera Drake.:hmmm:
What do you all think about this?

I haven’t watched the Academy Awards since Shakespear in Love won best picture over Saving Private Ryan. They are totally irrelevant to me.

Peace

So true. I used to literally go to every new release in my youth (wasn’t Catholic then). Hosted Oscar parties, etc. Loved movies.

Now, I saw the Lord of the Rings movies and The Passion. That’s IT in the last few years. Not spending my money on any of Hollywood’s cr***ola!!

The powers that be in that town just…don’t…get…it.

That’s an excellent idea, I’m with you, and I’ll pass the idea along.

I think it’s good that the hyprocisy of the left is finally being exposed. Look at the hypocrisy of Hollywood, look at Hilary trying to run as a religious and pro-life candidate, Barbara Boxer attacking a successful woman like Condi Rice etc. Finally, forums like these, talk radio, Foxnews, etc. are not going to let them get away with it. I’ve seen the left get away with it for the past 40 years, but no more! We should be celebrating!

This is the premise in Michael Medved’s book as well. He was a longtime movie critic and said that despite OVERWHELMING evidence that controversial, edgy, and adult themed movies lost money while family movies, religious movies, and children’s movies generally were the high earners, Hollywierd continues to toss out slime and sadly there is a huge public to lap it up and an academy that rewards this trash with awards even though the movies may be a box office flop. One of the few times when Hollywierd would rather be wrong than rich.

FWIW Medved is in hot water over his review of Million Dollar Baby because it upholds assisted suicide as a major theme. He said it is dishonestly promoted as a ‘feel good Rocky in a dress’ movie when in reality there is an agenda. I am not sure why Eastwood is shilling assisted suicide but frankly I think Medved did the honest thing by divulging this underlying theme while most critics ignored it.

I actually think it would be quite fascinating to watch the Academy Award event. I’d love to see if any of these self-appointed Hollywood “crusaders” has the… fortitude to break the lockstep with radical leftist causes and breach the deafening silence about why this film is being ignored by the industry despite its record-breaking sales and massive appeal to audiences who saw it by the millions.

Traditional Christianity, and particularly Catholicism, is one of the enduring, tolerable prejudices to this constituency.

You’re my kind of mommy.
Just wait til I make you eat your beans too… 😛

I just said that on a whim, but now that I think of it, I think we’ll watch The Passion that night. Hollywood will be thanking themselves, we’ll be thanking Jesus.

Ha - I felt exactly the same way! Shakespeare in Love was just awful. I still can’t believe it got best picture & Gwyneth Paltrow got best actress. The real kicker was Judy Dench getting the supproting actress award for being on the screen for all of 5 minutes.

Thanks for all the interesting responses. I haven’t watched the Oscars for years & years, & this year’s list of nominees isn’t inspiring me to start watching again. Hardly.
