You’re correct about the categories:
oscar.com/nominees/nominees.html

Too bad too. Maybe they should have a category: “Film with the most positive social impact.” Passion would win hands down, especially when you consider all the lives changes because of it. Unlike their charges that it would be antisemetic, which turned out to be false, there have been no negative ramifications I am aware of, yet numerous people turning away from crime and even terror.

Bobby Jim:
Jesus said “go and make disciples of all nations”, not “go and win academy awards”. I think Mel Gibson had the former in mind when making this movie. From what I heard, he did not set up an Oscar “campaign” like many other movies have, so to even get two might actually be a surprise.
Right On!

Yeah right, I’m probably guessing they’d give that award to ‘Kinsey’… then again they might not, that would make their agenda look too obvious… especially going up against Passion. They’d probably argue the film could’ve been anti-semetic. But Kinsey… it promotes homosexuality, that’s gotta have positive social impact!

Sad, but we can pretty much count on Hollywood to embrace anything detrimental to society. There are no-doubt many good people in Hollywood, but they greatly outnumbered by the moral dwarfs that dominate the screen.

In part, the Passion was doomed just due to when it came out. if it had been released in October, they wouldn’t have been able to ignore it. It’s a long long way from May (or February, really) to December and easy to conveniently forget.

I wonder if Mel will attend the event even though his film is not nominated. It would be classy of him to go, smile and enjoy the evening because he made the movie for his own reasons- who cares what Hollywood thinks. I saw him in person in Chicago the summer of 2003. He was so humble and casual. Not at all Mr. Hollywood. —KCT
