I think I’m going to volunteer at the local shelter. They seem to have a plethora of pits (and chihuahua’s:confused:) The next volunteer/foster are in January.

I have seen some seemingly sweet acting pits there, and figure the only way to get over my natural apprehension is to care for them…

That’s a good idea, but could you send those chihuahuas my way? 👍

Watch out… those little dogs can be pretty dangerous… One family was eaten alive by their chihuahua…

:rotfl:

LOL… and the one I have now who is toothless will gum anyone to death that enters my house!

Yeah, they dislocate their jaws and swallow the prey whole like a snake. You’ll know what they had for dinner by the shape of their bellies…

… and the fact that they can’t move out of the spot they are in for weeks…

Just curious, why doesn’t your dog have any teeth?

She’s old, but the vet pulled all her front teeth a few years ago. At least she still has her back teeth. I begged him to save at least her canines but he pulled everything in front. 😦 Her mom had good teeth until the day she died, so I know it didn’t come from her mom’s side.

Hot dogs laced with antifreeze will take care of just about any Pit Bull problem you might come across. So in that respect they are much easier to get rid of than rats. The only thing is that people seem to put up with Pits for some strange reason. If nobody tolerated the dogs there would be no problem.

I am an experianced dog lover and trainer. The problem as I see it is simply this, irresponsible breeding and irresponsible pet ownership. I see a lot of this. No one should be breeding dogs unless they are "dog breeders and intimitaly knowledgable about the breed they are breeding, problem is Joe Blow can breed his pit and sell it and the new owner buys this animal not knowing or caring for the first thing about this breed.

When breeding animals the first and foremost issue should always be to improve or maintain the standard of the breed. Many owners of pits breed just for puppies to sell instead of choosing from criteria to improve the breed, I.E what do I want these pups to look like, what should I try to breed in as in behavior, and agressiveness? Health issues?

I have looked at litters of pups and it is pretty easy to tell if a pup will be agressive, Not only does one look at the pups and test them but also look at the parents Are they agressive? puppies learn agressiveness from thier parents as well as being influenced by breeding. Let us face it, Pitts are breed for aggresiveness, would a dog fighter want a friendly dog?

If a person is going to breed pitts a reputable breeder will look to breed only non agressive dogs and breed for form or in other words for the standard of the breed. If a breeder is indiscriminate toward whom he allows to buy his pups and makes no demand that these pups be fixed as part of the sale contract then he is just another Joe Blow off the street.

I read a story about a human who savagely beat and killed another person!!! We should ban people, since they are not human-friendly and WILL attack other humans! Every day I read stories about a human being hurting another. Needless to say, I wouldn’t let a human being near a young child.

Grow up. This hatred of specific breeds of dogs is a trend. Used to be German Shepherds, then Rottweilers, now pit bulls.

Cite some scientific evidence that says Pit Bulls are genetically dangerous, or drop your rants.
amen to this. 👍

i have seen chihuahuas go ballistic when passing another dog seemingly wanting to rip their throats out. it’s the owners, not the breed. granted the smaller the less damage, but mutt’s have been responsible for numerous attacks.

you ban pit bulls, then next will be german shepherds, huskies, malamutes, dobermans, rottweilers, chow’s, bulldogs and then what? dna testing to see if you mutt has wolf genes?

every pit bull i have known (and i have known many) were all sweet as could be and the one thing they had in common was intelligent owners that knew how to train and socialize them. that’s more than i can say for some of these microscopic designer dogs that want to sink their tic-tac size teeth into ankles because the owners didn’t know the first thing about dogs. i think they think they’re a kind of fashionable muff or something.

petey was pit!

have you heard of NEUTICLES? check them out. they even have neuticle necklaces! early Christmas shopping! 😃

LOL, years ago when I first heard of them being used for “cheating” at dog shows, I thought it was hilarious. I didn’t realize they were still out there!

I’ve never met a Newfoundland that couldn’t be trusted. They’re way nicer and cuter than pits.

Newfoundlands are natural lifesavers. They won’t harm an ant. A perfect dog for family.

Some of them are clumsy, however… big friendly dogs can still hurt people… but generally do so in completely innocent exuberance.

No. But pitbulls were bred to fight, and they are just too strong and powerful. If my tiny schnoodle flipped out, you wouldn’t need more than a few stitches. With a pitbull, it’s much more serious.
I think there’s more to it than being strong and bred to fight. Maybe I’m missing something. My dogs are Great Pyrenees. They are extremely strong, very fast despite their size, and were bred to protect flocks by fighting wolves and bears. If seriously attacked by one, a person would be fortunate to survive. But GPs are reputed to be very gentle dogs. Mine certainly are. Of course, they weren’t bred to fight people. I haven’t seen them attack bears, and hope never to see it. But they certainly keep the coyotes a long way off. As near as I can tell, they do what they are supposed to do. Apparently, they’re not true “herders”, but more like “escorts”. They escort my wife wherever she goes on the place, one on each side. They do the same with the grandkids. They do it with me too, but not as much.

But pit bulls weren’t bred to attack people either. The audience in the old fighting pits was right there next to the pit. It wouldn’t do to have one of the dogs attack members of the audience. So, supposedly, they were bred selectively to fight dogs, not people.

I am inclined to think, as one poster pointed out, that indiscriminate breeding and terrible owners who perhaps have selected for aggressiveness toward people, have perhaps ruined the breed. (Again, it’s not a breed in itself, but a term applied to more than one distinct breed.)
