The Pope and the Monsignor

"Monsignor Michael R. Schmitz was ordained by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in 1982. As a German who has had extensive contact with Pope Benedict XVI, IgnatiusInsight.com asked Msgr. Schmitz his opinion of the effect of our new pope on Germany. For Germany, we wondered, will this be a time of hope and renewal of faith?

Msgr. Schmitz, 47, is a German, born and educated, but now serves as the U.S. Provincial Superior of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Msgr. Schmitz oversees the U.S. branch of this new order of priests devoted to the Traditional Latin Mass. As a priest studying in Rome, he had regular contact with his fellow countryman Cardinal Ratzinger. During the year prior to his election as pope, Msgr. Schmitz and several others from his order met with Cardinal Ratzinger to bring him up to date on the new order of priests. (More biographical information is available at the end of this interview.)

I had the privelege of hearing Msgr. Schmitz speak this Saturday at the Rockford Latin Mass Community Conference. He spoke about Pope Benedict XVI and how he is the right man at the right time.

He also said not to be troubled at the appointment of Archbishop Levada as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Msgr. Schmitz gave a brief history of the office, saying that the title of prefect was held by the pope up until Pope Paul VI. The prefect has to do what his boss tells him to do, so Archbishop Levada can only do what Pope Benedict XVI wants him to do.

I sometimes attend Mass at St. Mary’s Oratory in Rockford. The rector, Fr. Brian Bovee, is an excellent priest who both safeguards the traditions of the Church while being faithful to the Magisterium. Msgr. Schmitz and Fr. Bovee are both holy priests. The Church is fortunate to have the Institute of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest.
