As most of you know, Pope Benedict XVI awarded both Mother Angelica and Deacon Steltemeier (chairman of EWTN) the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal amid much publicity and fanfare.

Does this award symbolically close the chapter on Cardinal Mahony’s efforts to punish Mother Angelica for her criticism of his liturgical instructions? Does it also mean that board of EWTN may rest assured that the network may broadcast unimpeded from control by the American bishops? Or am I missing something?

That depends on whether Cardinal Mahoney is politically astute or if he is so filled with anger and bitterness that he does not care how a campaign against EWTN hurts him, so long as it hurts them. As for the USCCB, my guess is that they’ll adopt a “hands-off” policy where nothing negative is officially done, but the attitudes will leak out and shape the attitudes of the faithful.

Well, the really good news is that Cardinal Mahoney is fast approaching the mandatory retirement age of 75. I think within the next two years he’ll have to “offer” his retirement to the Pope. I would think Pope Benedict would jump on that like a hungry dog on a pork chop! Then, he can select someone faithful to the teachings of the Church to try to straighten out the Los Angeles Archdiocese. With God’s grace, anything is possible!
