maybe the shoes are traditionally red because red is the color of Martyrs and the first Pope, Saint Peter, was a martyr?
On the only occasion I ever saul Paul VI (at the Canonization of the 70 English martyrs), Paul VI was wearing red slippers, that appeared to be velvet. If I remember correctly (and there is no reason to assume that I do), they had a coat of arms or some other ornament embroidered on the vamp. This was remarked upon not long after the pope began his current reign. He doesn’t seem to have changed his preferences in shoe color.
I’m curious what color shoes John Paul and Paul VI used.
Those shoes are as plain as they get other than the color. They are hardly “hideous or frightful.” “Ugly” does not equate to “hideous or frightful.”Sigh Why do I waste my time with such rudeness?
monstrosity

Looks like it was used properly after all.

2. something hideous or frightful

Twasn’t hyperbole. 'Twas opinion, directed at ugly shoes, not a human being. Get over it, and “dial back” the condescension when it comes to me.![]()
The one does not refute the other. A thing can be hideous or frightful in its plainness. Those shoes are as plain as they get other than the color. They are hardly “hideous or frightful.”
