The Pope's safety and Sunday homily

I’m not sure which forum this should go into, but thought I’d try here. I was expecting to here something in the homily on Sunday given all of the hoopla about the Pope’s comments, and the reactions of various Muslim clerics and groups worldwide.

I thought there would be some way to weave it into the homily, but there was nothing mentioned.

Did anyone else hear any words about it this Sunday? I would assume that many Prot. churches would be discussing this since they don’t necessarily follow the structure that we have.

No, I didnt hear anything, but that was probably because the Bishop issued a letter to be read at Mass urging us to write letters to our Members of Parliament asking for them to re-open the gay marriage issue.

At our Lutheran church (ELCA), one of the prayers (don’t know the exact term - benediction? somewhere around there - when the congregation responds, “Lord, hear our prayers”), they did mention “…the upheavel going on now in the Middle East” (kind of hard to hear what the new pastor in training was saying - no microphone-clip). The sermon was also about watching what you say (words can both bless and curse).

Quite subtle, I thought. Subtle. Other than that, we didn’t hear anything else on the matter.

Depending on the priest, we even pray for the President and all world leaders, as well as the hostages. This week was a priest who typically gives a brief petition.

I honestly don’t remember if the pope was mentioned. I worked 11pm-7am and then stayed up to go to 8:30am Mass, so I was a little out of it. I hope he was, though!

Our homily focussed on the scripture readings. The priest wisely didn’t hype an already overblown story from the news media.

I’ve read that homilies by definition focus on Scripture, versus sermons which can be anything. Our priests tie the readings into our lives and demonstrate how they apply to us.

It’s a shame that you would think that mentioning that we should pray for our Pope since he is the primary focal point of terrorist hate to be ‘hyping an already overblown story’. For so many people, the Mass is the only dose of Catholicism they get in a week.

I would say the US is the primary focal point of terrorist hate, although probably close behind are corrupt regimes in Muslim countries, and Israel (probably but not necessarily in that order). The pope is just a flash in the pan for now, his remarks and their aftermath the flavor of the week in the news.

We should always pray for our pope, and indeed we do always do so as part of the mass.
