The Prayers At The Foot Of The Altar?

The Prayers at the foot of the Altar were Psalm 42 with the Antiphon Judica Me (on some occasions, Psalm 42 was omitted), the Confiteor, and a couple of other prayers as the Priest kissed the Altar. They were inscribed as part of the Roman Missal promulgated by St. Pius V. (This is not to say that they weren’t already being used in other places.)

These and the Last Gospel, as I previously said, were originally sacristy devotions.

These are NOT the same things as the Leonine Prayers (Hail, Holy Queen, Prayer to St. Michael, and a few others) that Pope Leo XIII ordered to be said AT THE END of Low Mass. Note that these were NEVER part of the Mass itself.

He intended them to be prayers for protection of the temporal authority of the Pope over the Papal States during a political struggle with the newly united Italy.

Pius X changed their intention to be against Modernism.

Pius XII changed their intention to the conversion of Russia.

The Prayers at the Foot are one of the only things I see as being better in the TLM than in the NO just looking at rubrics(disregarding how they are commonly celebrated).

I wish they would be brought back. As a potential future priest, and as someone who currently serves the EF, I would love to be able to say them at every Mass

Penitential Rite A in the OF is sort of like a pared down version of the prayers at the foot of the altar. In fact the Penitential Rite itself seemingly didn’t exist prior to 1969, and perhaps was created to replace the old prayers.

I’ve sometimes wondered why the prayers at the foot of the altar couldn’t just be made an option for the OF as a penitential rite. The mass already has a number of options, why not allow some that are more traditional in character?

This is how I could see it done as well. It basically just adds a psalm, and moves the confiteor up a few steps in the order of the mass

Everyone knows the Mass starts with “In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen. Introibo ad altare Dei” 🙂

What’s to stop you from praying them privately before the OF?

“ad Deum qui laetificat juventum meum” 😉 (I think that’s how it goes lol)

I didn’t know what ya’ll were talking about until someone mentioned Psalm 42 and the Confiteor - it should be added back to the Mass!

Nothing, and it is something I would consider doing, I just think they could be worked into the OF very nicely as part of the mutual enrichment Benedict XVI has talked about.

just as I think that the readings of the OF could be worked into the EF, before you say that it is just a one way street.
