Not surprising. I used to live in Camden Town in London and those alkies, man, you haven’t seen anything so messed up in your life. Very sad.

I wonder though, do people who are addicted to alcohol get a different kind of “high” from it? When I drink too much, I just get silly for a few minutes, followed by a sick stomach. Not pleasurable.

And motor-vehicle accidents kill more people in a day than jumping out of aeroplanes without parachutes kills in a year.

Unfortunate that one can’t really do a Singaporean chewing gum law on alcohol.

Is it true that most people who die an alcohol related death are regular people and not the so called “down and outs”? Also what about the people who are killed by people who are drunk and the drunk people who kill themselves in accidents etc.

Also why is society so ok about alcohol when the report in the op shows how this drug kills and destroys so many lives?

Probably, in part, because Jesus drank alcohol - as did the Apostles and probably every saint in history.

Are you saying people are drinking alcohol in order to follow Jesus?

Are you suggesting that Jesus is somehow to blame for people drinking alcohol and for all the death & destruction that comes as a result of the drinking of alcohol?

No, the poster is just pointing out that drinking alcohol without getting drunk is not a sin.

I have no idea. I have heard, but I have no sources to back this up, that in America a car crash can be considered alcohol related even if the motorist was sober but the nondriving passenger was drunk. So, I am not so certain if I trust statistics.🤷

Being drunk is a sin, drinking in moderation is not.

I’ve heard that a regular person feels out of control when he has had too much to drink, whereas an alcoholic starts to feel in control when he has had too much to drink, therein lies the difference.

The report in the op is based on factual info from a trusted source, the British Medical Association.

Anyhow we don’t have to look far to see the terrible effects of alcohol in peoples lives. People are rightly anti-abortion and the terrible destruction of lives in drug abuse but when it comes to alcohol people don’t seem to care less that this is killing people and destroying lives. Also how many unplanned pregnancies are as a result of people who had sex because of being drunk and they wouldn’t have had sex if they were sober.

What will it take for people to become more concerned about the “demon drink”?

BTW the report in the op didn’t mention anything about sin, nor did i but the report is highlighting the fact that alcohol is killing so many people and destroying so many lives. But does anyone care less about this?

Of course people care. Why do you think that they don’t? I am not going to call alcohol, demon drink though because it is no more a demon drink then anything else.

Binge drinking would decrease if we taught people to drink in moderation and drunkeness was looked down upon. Instead we look at a 21 binge drinking as a rite of passage. I’ve even heard people say-here in America-that the only reason to drink is to get drunk. Our view of alcohol is what is messed up but alcohol itself is not bad.

If we all drank an occasional glass of wine with friends or to compliment food there would be no problem.

I think your ideas are like the ones people put forward for using contraceptives, i.e if people were only more careful by using contraceptives when they have casual sex then there would be no unplanned pregnancies and no abortions.

The word “if” doesn’t work because sadly more and more people are destroying their lives and other peoples live though the use of alcohol.

I know that taking a glass of wine isn’t sin but can Christians go the extra mile and show people that we don’t need to take alcohol. There are so many nice non-alcoholic drinks surely there is no need to take alcohol, which destroys so many lives.

Are secular organisations like the BMA more concerned about the dangers of alcohol than Christians are?

Alcohol is a not a demon drink. This is coming from the wife of recovered alcoholic. My family who are European have always drank in moderation- a glass of wine with dinner, a beer at a barbaque. Never have I seen anyone in my family drunk. I had a glass of champagne on New Years Eve since I was a kid -although really only a couple sips because at the time I thought it tasted terrible. When I was a teen my best friend’s parents (also from Europe) always had wine with dinner, home made wine that her dad makes. We used to mix it half with Mountain Dew soda and have it with dinner. The original wine cooler.😉

My husband’s parents never allowed alcohol, it was forbidden in his house but his extended family drank -to excess. If they drank, it was to get drunk. I think that both “nature” and “nurture” are responsible for my husband’s disease.

People can and do drink responsibly. Jesus’ first miracle was turning water in wine. I think it’s rather insulting to say alcohol is a demon drink.

Obesity kills people every day through heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes among other illnesses. We don’t call food a demon.

We don’t keep alcohol in our home for obvious reasons but I will have a drink with friends on occasion. A glass of red wine is known for great health benefits. We can not sterilize society, we do not take out sugar from all foods because some are diabetic or nuts because some people are deathly allergic to them.

There is nothing evil about alcohol -moderation is key in everything we do in life.

The report is not talking about alcohol related deaths so much as the reduced instances of death from heroin overdose.

Seems to me people are trying to take the old “take away the guns” stance. The reason alcohol isn’t illegal is because millions upon millions of people drink it every day without any problems whatsoever.

People are going to drink too much, and they are going to do stupid things after they have. That doesn’t mean alcohol is the culprit. The people making the bad decisions are.

Just to make a point, heroine should be illegal because you can never recreationally use it responsibly. It’s always completely intoxicating and dangerous. As well as highly addicting, etc. In contrast, you could drink alcohol everyday and never feel any effects from it and not get addicted to it.

Demon Drink? Give me a break, will ya. I am sober 24 years in AA as a Recovered alcoholic, not a “reformed” alcoholic. Alcohol has been around since the start of agriculture. For a minority, such as myself, it becomes a problem. For the majority, it does not.

Like my 83 year old Mother. I take her out to dinner, and she may order a cocktail. She will take a delicate, lady-like sip of it and put the glass down for several minutes. Not gulp in down in two swallows like I used to do.:o

Throughout the dinner she may continue to take lady-like sips. I resist the fantasy of hitting her over the head with a baseball bat and telling her to stop torturing the poor drink and finish it off.

As we end the dinner, and I leave the tip, she may still have a quarter of her drink in the glass. She ignores it and walks away. A true social drinker, she is.

Using contraceptives is a sin, drinking in moderation is not. So, I don’t see the connection.

My own opinion is that people need to see more Christians drinking responsibly.

Here in the southern US there is a strong antialcohol atmosphere, and yet somehow many people still get drunk. 🤷

Your question is based on the false assumption that people aren’t concerned about alcohol abuse. We have strict drinking/driving laws in most states in the US and public advertising campaigns telling people not to drink and drive. There are also rules at most employers whereby someone will be fired for coming into work drunk and/or drinking on the job, or they will be sent to get help.

What is it you are looking for? Do you support a ban on all alcohol? We tried that in the US, and it didn’t work out too well.

Alcoholics are people like me, who have a genetic predisposition to enjoy being drunk very much but feel sick after a small amount of alcohol, who have trouble controlling their emotions and tension without a drug and who are exposed to alcohol in large amounts, and who believed at some time that it was OK and not harmful to be drunk most of the time.
When I take a drink, I feel warm and relaxed for a short time, then just when other people are getting mellow I feel achy and panicky and can’t stop jumping around. Everything seems threatening and I feel angry and don’t know why. I want another drink the way a hungry little kid wants sugar. It’s physical. When I finally have enough the irritability and panic etc. give way to a feeling that the world is just as iit ought to be and at peace everywhere. This lasts hours. When it begins to fade I need to drink again. There is no such thing as moderation for someone like me, and the word “binge” is inappropriate. It’s not like binge eating, where someone avoids food until she can’t stand it and eats everything in sight and feels sicka nd guilty. It’s a need to stay in the place where the world is in peace and harmony and everything is beautiful, as long as possible. It’s a terror of falling back into the sick place and panicking again.
For me, alcohol is far more deadly than any street drug I know about. For a normal person, it’s a food and it’s apparently good for most people. Not me.

I need to re-state what ive already posted that yes drinking wine is permitted in the Bible and i know the Bible tells us that drunkenness is a sin. Also i know that a lot of people drink moderately.

What the report in the op states is the fact that many(& one person is one too many) people die from the use of alcohol. Also many peoples lives are destroyed by the use of alcohol and many people who use alcohol destroy other peoples lives.

Now i know the heart of this problem is sin and im aware that no human can stop people from sinning. Therefore imo banning alcohol etc won’t work. However what i am advocating is the idea that Christians (who are to be salt and light in this world and who are supposed to have a genuine concern/love for people) go the extra mile by abstaining from alcohol to show people that there is no need to take alcohol, period. Imo if this action by Christians influences one person not to take alcohol then this is a very worthwhile thing to do.

Can i also say that there is no valid reason for any person to take alcohol(i do of course exclude any possible medical reasons). There are so many good/nice non-alcoholic drinks, so there is no valid reason for taking alcohol.

Again i say imo that it would be far better for Christians to abstain from alcohol voluntarily in order to influence other people not to take alcohol. Also remember the other person that a Christian could influence not to take alcohol might just be the next person who if they take alcohol could become an alcoholic, a drunk driver who kills someone and/or himself, a drunken person who assaults someone(a wife or children), a teenager who has sex while drunk and then gets pregnant and has an abortion.

Do Christians really care?? Do Christians really care enough to go the extra mile???
