But what about the Orthodox?

I think “Protestant” is a term we must continue to use. The denial of the word by many distant descendants of the Reformation is part of their general denial of history. And if we are to be faithful to them, we must continue using the word even if they don’t like it (just as I sometimes have to say “Roman Catholic” even though some in communion with Rome don’t like that term). On the other end of Protestantism, many Anglicans claim not to be Protestants. Catholics need to understand that in both cases (Anglicans or radical/nondenom Protestants) the word “Protestant” doesn’t best describe how people see themselves theologically. But in both cases it says something important historically and you can’t let us get away with denying it (Anglicanism exists as a separate communion because of the Reformation, and much of Anglo-Catholicism is a massive and elegant attempt to deny this clear historical truth).

Anglicanism exists as a separate communion because of history, Henry, some dynastic matters, Charles and his aunt, Pavia, Clement, and the Reformation.

Well certainly Pentecostalism is growing around the world. I think its the fastest growing Christian faith currently. How about Catholics are we growing?

Does anyone believe that protestants will return to the church?

I would not be surprised! I think that could be a good thing!

Worldwide I think the LDS, Pentecostals and Catholics are gaining converts. The JWs and INC are also growing. Muslims are having babies and the smaller counterparts to our God, like the wiccan show high growth rates.
It is in Europe and the United States/Canada that mainline Protestant and the Christian Church in general is in trouble.

No disagreement, O Urbanissime!

A return to paganism. Too bad.

A return to paganism. Too bad.
Lewis devotees will recall that he wrote that it would be preferable for apostate Christians to become pagans if only because pagans recognized a power beyond themselves. What civilization is actually becoming is hedonistic–every man pleasing himself just for the sake of himself. You know: “If it feels good do it” mentality. Of course, Lewis put all this much better and with the colorful example of modern men sacrificing goats on the common to read their entrails (returning to true paganism), but the point is the same.

Sounds something like “Is Theism Important?”. He had a slightly different take on paganism in “Religion without Dogma?”.

Hi, Della.

Here is a link to the actual survey results: americanreligionsurvey-aris.org/

What is shows is that contrary to the OP, Christianity is declining across the board, especially in mainline churches, in every state. Roman Catholicism is decreasing in a “stunning” way in the New England. It’s increases are in the Southwest among Hispanics.

Moreover, contrary to her other anti-anything but Catholic thread ,‘evangelicals will disappear within a decade,’ this survey says that Evangelicals are the fastest growing group of all! (oops there CathApos) Best to keep your surveys and article conclusions straight.

Jews are decreasing and Muslims are increasing. Worst, those who have no faith tradition are climbing steadily and that is truly sad.

So that’s the actuality of things. I repeat, you have nothing to do here but raise threads that are either false or contradictory, in an attempt to make every other faith tradition look poor.

The story is that faith is declining, and that apparently doesn’t matter to you if you can claim that there are three more RC’s than Protestants in the country.
I think that its sometimes sad but true. But I am not sure its faith thats declining, I think its People taking the time to get back with God. And I really think that with the economy the way it is, people are going to have to get an over-haul, Not on their cars, houses, its gonna be themselves now. I think that people have to come back to God. We all have too much. And now its time to clean out the closet and the soul. I think you are going to find that after this recession. depression whatever it is, you are going to see more and more People back to Church in record numbers. You just wait and see in five years from now. Gods Church is not only going to be here, its going to be bigger and stronger. And if not, then we are doomed.

And if I may add without causing trouble I don’t think that Cath Apos. is trying to make any faith look poor, I just think that his love for his Church and faith is something he really wants to share. He is really proud of his faith. I respect all faiths who Honor Jesus Christ and do his work, but I thank Him also for my Church. But no disprespect but if you would not think that your church was (all that) what would you really have.

My Dad told me years ago that we are from one faith, because we all come from one body of Christ. And we will all come together someday. I pray for that day. I can’t wait. The world will be so much happier. And I BELIEVE in my heart it will be the RCC. Like CA I believe that the Church was built on Peter. The bible does tell me that. People get mad and hate us but that is what God said, you are Peter, and On the Rock. If you look it up Rock and Peter mean Papa which means Pope. So you can at least see why we do believe what we believe.

May I sum up what I believe is the current trend?
All religious organizations apart, the trend is the latter spiritual rain.

When it rains, does it not rain on both the just and the unjust alike?
Who are we to judge on to whom it falls ?

Deu 11:14 That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

Every generation from the first rain (Pre-Christ) and to include the latter rain (Post Christ) is all controlled by God (Holy Spirit) in due seasons.

First rain came as the Holy Spirit spoke to Adam, Noah, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the prophets and “in these last days spoken by His Son, Jesus Christ”.(Heb 1:2)

Jesus came: Job 29:23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

The latter rain rains spur-ratically, over here, over there, who knows from where the wind blows.
One thing we do know for sure, is that we can see the evidence of it.

Pro 16:15 In the light of the king’s countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

Life is in the countenance of the King Jesus, and His favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

During these times, the failing spiritual faithfulness to Godly principals are taking us to the brink of collateral destruction.

And during these times, the latter rain pours out because the human heart becomes receptive due to fear of world conditions.

There is a trend towards seeking God because the latter rain is taking advantage of the receptivity of the human heart. (Called Repentance)

I must add at this point this verse to qualify the sentence above: 2Co 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Meaning, in my understanding, that godly sorrow is sorrow recognized as having sinned against God, which is to salvation, and not repentant of worldly sorrow which is sorrow for the consequences which worketh death.

What we are seeing allot of, is worldly sorrow, presumptuous of godly sorrow not the repentance towards sin.

The latter rain, rains on those who recognize the sin and take action to remedy them by accepting God’s forgiveness, knowing that God is just to forgive us.

This transformation takes place in the heart and is manifested in the desire of the individual to get back to basic’s, 101 relationship with God directly.

The rain falls upon whom the rain falls.(God’s choice, of course)

Zec 10:1 Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

Note: grass there is reference to :1Pe 1:24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

Hence: Life is brought to the grass.

And now here this: Jam 5:7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Please notice that nothing in this post mentions any particular church?

Church choice is yours, go where the Lord leads you, and while your there, work in His behalf, to lead others to Christ, and if it be so that they choose to join your organization, then it is God who does it.
Code:
Jer 5:24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
Blessings, AJ

But Baptists ARE on the list since they are a Protestant sect started in the 16th century from England. Any denomination that is not in accordance with the Catholic church in which Christ founded, is a Protestant. They P-R-O-T-E-S-T the church which Jesus Christ established.
ugh…I never said anything about them not being protestant, I was talking about them not being on the list of shrinking denominations.

O-K my H-O-L-Y-C-A-T-H-O-L-I-C-C-H-U-R-C-H-G-O-E-R

Because they are confused.
Yes, and usually have had some kind of meltdown or death in their life, and are having a hard time adjusting. Thats when cults move in on them.

I have a good protestant friend, I love her, but she asked me to go with her to a fortune teller who can talk to the dead. She knew how bad I missed my brother. She also added a women in her church used to be Catholic and said it was okay too.

I told her I appreciate your love and concern but first of all the women does not know the Catholic faith and that just proves it. (also is she was really a True Catholic she should never have left. And I told her also the women should know going to a fortune teller is a mortal sin. It breaks one of the ten commandments. Now any Catholic knows that!

But I explained to her that rather you are a Catholic or not you cannot break one of the ten commandments. She said I never realized that you were. She thanked me for telling her, and then we kid eachother alot because of our faiths (all in fun) we pray for eachother alot, but I said rather you are a Pro or Cat you must follow the ten. We laughed all day. But she said in the protestant faith she never knew that. But guess what, she never went either!😃

And plenty of people are leaving the Catholic church today because they feel the RCC has twisted the truth. I also see plenty of people coming to Christ that have no idea what the RCC teaches. Then you see people leave non-RC churches because they feel they don’t have the right truth. There are plenty of combinations out there today with regard to people switching denominations/churches for whatever reason seems to suit them. But the most important thing is to give your life to Christ period and let GOD be the judge. Stop ranting and raving the ridiculous notion that Protestant churches won’t exist in the future. Protestant churches have always existed and always will since the day Jesus built HIS church.
Sorry, the Protestant religion hadn’t seen the light of day until the 1500’s. Don’t know where you are getting your info from, but it is incorrect.

I think it quite possible that people are not turning away from God so much as they are going it alone. That is not horrible of course, since all our spiritual time should not be attached to church, but I am not in favor of that alone. I think it fair to conclude from the bible and other faith traditions outside Christianity, that we gain something important in community, the sharing of faith. Thus the lessening of church adhesion is troubling to me.

I think quite enough time has been spent on OHCA. The methodology simply has driven a number away from listening to her/him. I have no quarrel with anyone being happy with their church. I’m deleriously happy with mine, but I don’t need to “defend” it and claim its superiority either. It stands for itself, without need of my help, and nicely I think. I don’t think I’m much a spokesperson for her, if I harrangue others constantly that they are wasting their time until they join her. That tends to drive people away. Taking joy in losses in any church is uncharitable and frankly raises some very troubling issues.

Can’t say as I ever heard that definition before. I thought Peter meant rock, but you say it means papa and that means pope? Please show me the etimology. I’d love to see that.

Now that is an interesting story. Could you ask plenty of those people what the Catholic Church teaches and how they twisted the truth.

But you better watch on that twisting yourself. The Catholic Church was here long before the Protestant. If not how could your church be Protestant. Do you know what the word protestant means. It means protesting the Catholic Church. And how could Luther have turned people from the Catholic Church if the protestant church was here first. Would it not be the Catholic church protesting the Protestant church then? Better check on that tad of info there.

You might want to read Gottle’s response somewhere around pages 4-6 or so. He gives a very interesting response that is reasoned and I think is essentially what many Protestants would argue. Coming from a RC, I find it refreshing that at least one person stops pretending not to understand. I think most people here are intelligent, and this has been explained again and again, yet it is re-raised again and again.

The reason Peter is translated to rock and Father, (Papa) is quite simple. Go to the O.T. Abraham in hebrew is exhaulted Father. Now go to the word Abraham it also means rock. Go to Isaiah 51:1-2. (you will see rock). Now Jesus changed Abram to Abraham he changed Simon to Peter, they mean the same rock. Rock means Father, in greek Papa means Father. And from latin Papa is Pope.
