The "Punk Priest".... Everything about this just looks horribly wrong...

The reason why we dont have a “punk” rite is because in 5 years this guy is going to be PASSE.

this guy is forever a priest…what is he gonna do whan he is 60 years old?

I suppose the style of his ministry will evolve as his taste in music evolves…
 
What a horrible image of the priesthood to present to people. Orthodox or not, this is a disgrace and an injury to the Church and her traditions and to the dignity of Holy Orders.

Why wouldnt he want to be more like the Curé d’Ars? Now he was the model priest 🙂
 
Oh my goodness a priest not doing things the way the traditionalists say they should be done…whatever shall we do… :rolleyes: Good for him, I bet he reaches a lot of people.

Yes, by stripping the priesthood of it’s dignity, distinction and solemnity and replacing it with cheap trends and degrading pop culture.

A priest is not a clown.
 
I saw no clown. :confused: Just becuase this man is not walking around town in full clericals with his hands folded and eyes heavenward all the time does not mean he is serving the Church any less faithfully or with any less dignity for that matter. Just because you don’t agree with his method doesn’t make it wrong.

I think I’ve given my response on this same issue a few months back. Anyway, here it is again: I don’t see any problem with this. If this is an issue, then we would’ve taken issue on St. Philip Neri and St. Francis of Assisi; in their times, they were considered unconventional, and if we were to live in their times we would’ve found them weird as well. Of course, now we don’t think so, but that’s because we have the benefit of hindsight; people in those days don’t, and were most likely unaware of a saint living in their midst.

I’d have trouble if he did a punk mass, but I don’t find it disrespectful. By punk standards, he’s pretty average a singer… not on key, but full of energy and buy-in to what he’s singing.

Far better him than, say, “Fr. Boredom the Faithless,” one of the classic comedy tropes of the past.

You may find this surprising coming from me being strictly attached to the Traditional Latin Mass, but it seems that the heart of this priest at least is in the right place. (And, besides, his music has got a good beat.😃 )

And if anyone here thinks his website or he is disrespectful, all’s I can say is that you’ll probably see a lot worse in your lifetimes.
 
The red flag for me here is that I’ve seen this sort of behavior in priest before. Young priest trying to be hip with young people, by taking on the style and culture of anti-establishment. Hippie priest, heavy metal priest, biker priest, I have seen them and all have gone done in failure, usually bringing scandal to the Church in the process.

I think young people actually look to see holiness in a priest, not adolescent behavior. Eventually young people grow up and turn away from such behavior.

The bottom line is, a priest needs to behave as an adult.

Well said. And the ironic thing is that this dude is already twice as old as the “kids” with which he is trying to relate. I think most of them can see right through him.

Time to grow up and act like the alter Christus that he was ordained to be.
 
Priest, yes, but punk? Green Day? The Cure? Smashing Pumpkins? ABBA? Def Leppard?!

NOT PUNK.

I wanted to be all happy and supportive and maybe even admit to being tempted to check out one of his masses, but after looking over his music collection I just want to run. His attempt at singing ‘Here I Am, Lord’ isn’t helping either (though I will give it credit for hilarity).

Stick to plainchant, guys. You had a great thing going with that.

I would be interested in reading about specific scandals that you talk about above.

I say if it brings people to Christ who normally would not even take a second look, he is not just doing a “good job”, but a “great job”. Isn’t that is what it is all about. Many responses in this post seem too stiff and are ignoring what we all want.
 
I went through his site, and I think this priest is passionate about the Catholic faith. He is a little ‘out there’ for my tastes, but if his personality clicks with others who might not otherwise go to church, then more power to him. Looking through his site I don’t see any evidence of him not teaching the message of the CC, just a priest who is sincere about the faith. How awesome is that?

I listened to one of his homilies…the one on the Pentecost.

He is not wrong.

He does challenge them.

Try listening to one of his masses and see if there are any liturgical errors. He’s actually very animated, but very reverent.

Some people may not like the yelling he does. I’m a mid-twenties Catholic convert and I’m not into the “Can I get an Amen” and him singing happy birthday.

But in no part is it disrespectful

And that’s not him singing the song. It’s a group called the Vandals and they are from Organge County.

You guys all have good points.

I’ve listened to part of his last Mass at his current Parish…

The music ministry is pretty painful to listen to.

I don’t get why they recited the Gloria… but I guess there’s worst things that could be done.

The Priest makes an effort to chant, even though he could use some lessons. However I think his effort should be applauded. He chanted all of the Collects and Eucharistic Prayer III.

He sung the awful Celtic Mass Preface with instrumental assistance, which is regretable.

I skipped over the homily.

He seems to be “sticking to the script” and not doing a lot of improvisation.
