The Reality of Hell

Where does it say that?
Well for one of the most obvious places to look is our Creed, “the resurrection of the dead.”

Secondly, take a look at Revelation. On the Last Day, all will be reunited with their corporal bodies.

Even today Heaven is a corporal place. The Blessed Virgin, Christ, Enoch, Elijah have all been assumed into Heaven, body and soul.

There is no fire in hell and it is not a punishment from God:

“These two punishments (eternal and temporal) must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1472).

Hell is the eternal separation from God freely chosen by a person:

“To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice.” (CCC 1033)

"The images of hell that Sacred Scripture presents to us must be correctly interpreted. They show the complete frustration and emptiness of life without God. Rather* than a place, hell indicates the state of those who freely and definitively separate themselves from God, the source of all life and joy. This is how the Catechism of the Catholic Church summarizes the truths of faith on this subject: “To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God’s merciful love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called ‘hell’” (n. 1033).

“Eternal damnation”, therefore, is not attributed to God’s initiative because in his merciful love he can only desire the salvation of the beings he created. In reality, it is the creature who closes himself to his love. Damnation consists precisely in definitive separation from God, freely chosen by the human person and confirmed with death that seals his choice for ever. God’s judgement ratifies this state." (John Paul II Heaven, Hell, Purgatory)

Thats just one aspect of hell. As another poster mentioned earlier, hell is spiritual, physical, and psychological torment.

Eternal separation from God is the worst thing imaginable. But if you are saying it is something inflicted by God then that heresy.

eternal separation is inflicted by the person, affects them both spiritually and psychologically. Physical torment will be inflicted by Satan.

As far as the “end of time”, what you pointed out said, “On the Last Day”, it didn’t say ‘after the last day or when the last day ends but “On the Last Day”’.

Just where do you get that time will end or did you just get the idea out of thin air?

If creation is a creation by God than time, which is part of creation, is also created.

As far as “On the last day”, it says quite earlier in the bible that God was “busy, among other things, on the six days of creations” but that “On the seventh day, God Blest, Rested and Made Holy”, could this seventh day be the day that you are referring to when you refer to “On the Last Day”?

By God’s reckoning, we could very well be somewhere along on the sixth day and that the “On the Last Day” is referring to the seventh day which very well could have an unlimited running.

NO, Hell is going to be Satans place of punishment, how could he be inflicting anything when he himself will be tormented in this place…thats a common mistake many people make, they somehow think satan and the demons ‘rule’ over hell, but this could not be further from the truth, the bible clearly states hell was created as THEIR place of binding and punishment, not a place they can call their own and do whatever they want. LOL

Another thing, if its just eternal separation from God, I know plenty of people living today with absolutely no religion or God in their lives, and they seem to be pretty happy, some are quite successful as well, so…?

Church Doctrine:

The description of the judgment made by Jesus Himself (Matt:25) and His final sentence to the reprobate (those that die in mortal sin) “Depart from Me, you cursed into everlasting fire” would suffice to establish the existence of Hell. Repeatedly Jesus recalls the thought of hell under effective images (Gehenna of fire, exterior darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth, burning furnace ) Expressive too is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.

The nature of hell: (a) pain of loss, which is the gravest punishment in the privation of God, the supreme supernatural end of man (The union with God in the Beatific Vision)
(b) pain of the senses namely:that which comes from external things which God uses to affect the devils and the souls of the damned (as well as their bodies after the resurrection). the chief pain of the sense is fire, not figurative but real which torments the spirit says St.Thomas through a bond or link put by God between fire and the soul. The pain of hell is substantially immutable (never changing) Nothing certain can be said about the place of hell. Hell is a state and a place of the damned.

there are some testimonies of some of the details of hell found in the lives of the Saints, such as St.Theresa of Avilla and others. More detail is given by St.Thomas

The authentic interpreter of the Bible, The Roman Catholic Church, says the punishment is not from God. Can you love a “god” that inflicts someone with fire forever? Would you do that to someone? I advise you to RUN away from such a belief. A “god” that does that is not worthy of your love nor mine.

To say that God inflicts punishment is heresy and advise you to take it down.

"“These two punishments (eternal and temporal) must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1472).

God is the Judge, and what does He judge, how a person lives his life. And as a JUST JUDGE He sentences a person according to his mortal sin. Like Adam, was God unjust to Adam? And look what Adam did to himself, God warned him of the consequences. God doesn’t inflict punishment, if thats the way you interpret it, the sinner inflicts the punishment on himself because of his knowledgeable choice. God carries out the punishment as a JUST JUDGE SHOULD.

To leave the presence and turn your back on God deliberately is to condemn yourself, it is the supernatural consequence of free choice. Not one due to ignorance. Hell is a person’s choice, God does not condemn unjustly. If you do not understand this check with a knowledgeable priest or theologian.

You said: “God carries out the punishment as a JUST JUDGE SHOULD.”

I reply: This is not even correctly said. It is a side step comment that says God punishes the sinner. Do you accept the Catechism of the Catholic Church?

The condemnation is a self condemnation, and “punishment” is self inflicted. Blaming God will never work, in this world or the next.

Whether it’s even a punishment as we understand that word is debatable too. It’s eternity without God because you entered into the afterlife that way, and once there it’s too late to change things. You are in that state (without God) eternally.

It is Satans punishment too, he will just take it out on the human souls there and he is able to do that there because hes stronger, being an angel and all.

Its probably much like how prisons are. Everyone is doing time there, but the stronger inmates at the top call the shots.

Btw, people who live without God in this life arent fully living without him. The good they see amd experience in this life are sustained by God. in hell, that perceived good is gone totally and forever.

I find no conflict with my statments about The Catholic Doctrine on Hell, and the Catholic Catechism. I find confirmation. If we are Catholics we must follow the Church teaching before our own opinions, because it is to Her that Jesus “endowed” with divine assistance the gift of infallibility Believe me, if I thought that I was in conflict with her teachings, I would be the first to retract my statments.

After the death of the flesh, hell is a continuance of life without God. It’s just that the person enters of new phase since he is now existing without the flesh.

Life without God or against God whilst still in the flesh may involve lots of carnal (fleshy) pleasures.
But after we lose the flesh and exist as spirit, then life without or against God becomes a different matter because we no longer have fleshy pleasures to distract us anymore. This is when hell becomes hellish…even without the fire and brimstone.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: “These two punishments (eternal and temporal) must not be conceived of as a kind of vengeance inflicted by God from without, but as following from the very nature of sin.” (CCC 1472)

According to the Catholic Church, God DOES NOT punish sinners. To say so is heresy and grave sin. I ask that you stop saying that Hell is from God for it create’s grave wounds in people and diminishes the image of God. A God that torches people with fire for all eternity is not worthy of love. Good thing that God doesn’t exist. Yes hell is real but it the self chosen exclusion from God freely chosen by a person.

:twocents:

I don’t know, but how about:

Everything created is beautiful, joyous, light and goodness, in keeping with the nature of God.
We are in a fallen state so we normally do not see the radiance that fills the entire universe.
The purpose of life is to prepare us for heaven. Those who will share in the Beatific Vision will see creation as it is.
The light, the beauty is everywhere, but not everyone will experience it the same way.

Most of us will have had an experience where we are praised and honored, if only as infants, when our entrance in the room would light up everyone’s face.
Probably all of us have experienced the opposite: embarrassment - our wrong-doing seen by parents, teachers, peers, the courts, the newspapers, whatever.
Both, experiences of human attention, very different effect.

Some of us will hold onto our sins, our pride, greed, lust etc - it is all known by God, but we hide from ourselves.

Sin is a source of pain, and clinging to our ego, unrepentant we are chained to ourselves.
We hunger and burn; our actions defile us - the burning lake of sulfur.

All this occurs in the being of the individual, like me at this computer with the universe around me.
I burn in this tiny bubble in which I have closed myself, within an infinite space of light and beauty that surrounds God.
Souls around me, see the sin to my horror.
They, on the other hand, recognize themselves in this speck of dirt that I am.
They also see the sin that they themselves surrendered to our Lord, who died on the cross to save us.

Perhaps there is only heaven, but some of us will not want to know it.

Something like that.

Matt; 25Depart from Me you cursed into everlasting fire There are at least13 references in the Bible that God will punish those who die in mortal sin will go to Hell. God is not a sadist. I think you are letting your feelings do the talking, because somehow you don’t capture the truth. God is in control of the whole Universe, even Hell, as well as Heaven. I gave you Church teaching but you let your subjective judgement do the talking for you, and I can’t direct your mind to the truth of the Church’s teaching. To say that God does not punish sinners is a heresy He rewards the good, and punishes sinners. What is the final judgement all about?
