I think Lefebvre’s heart was in the right place, but I really can’t condone some of his actions, particularly the 1988 consecrations when he had already reached an agreement with then Cardinal Ratzinger. It is my own belief that Archbishop Lefebvre was a good man, and I believe the same about Fellay. Incidentally, they happen to be the two that I know more than a tiny bit about.
I think history will look more kindly on Archbishop Lefebvre than it does now.
It’s very unfortunate the way traditionalists were treated within the church, and we do owe a lot of thanks to Lefebvre and the SSPX for a great improvement of the situation. But, I can’t condone the means they have used to bring around this improvement.
