The Reunion of the SSPX May Be At Hand

It is my own belief that Archbishop Lefebvre was a good man, and I believe the same about Fellay. Incidentally, they happen to be the two that I know more than a tiny bit about.
I think history will look more kindly on Archbishop Lefebvre than it does now.
I think Lefebvre’s heart was in the right place, but I really can’t condone some of his actions, particularly the 1988 consecrations when he had already reached an agreement with then Cardinal Ratzinger.

It’s very unfortunate the way traditionalists were treated within the church, and we do owe a lot of thanks to Lefebvre and the SSPX for a great improvement of the situation. But, I can’t condone the means they have used to bring around this improvement.

Yep, I agree for sure.

I wouldn’t be surprised if many members of the SSPX broke away if the SSPX formally accepted an offer as described in the OP. If the OP is true, we will really see the true colors of rank and file of the SSPX. Hopefully, most of them truly do want to be united with Rome.
Neither would I. I know it will happen, just like what’s happening with the few people who belong to the Anglican Catholic Church who don’t want to join.

I am praying VERY hard for this union! It’s extremely important!

Or who can’t. Call it the ecumenical spirit, but I have a woman Anglican pastor who sends me current information about my birthplace (in the U.K) and a prayer, which I accept. A pretty decent sermon for tomorrow (Pentecost) as well. (Not to worry, I’m not joining the Anglican Church.) She’s not in a position to leave her parishioners but I wonder how many SSPX priests are in a similar position.

I don’t understand what you’re saying. Is it that you think some SSPX priests will leave the Society in order to cater to parishioners who are hostile to Rome?

I understand there are some benefactors like that, yes. Certainly puts them in a tough spot IMO as there is property (chapels, seminary, cemeteries, etc.) which is involved in any reunion with Rome.

If that’s the case, then God have mercy on them. It’s the pastor’s job to lead, not be led.
I think that those parishioners are the ones who may be actually adhering to schism. As Cardinal Hoyos pointed out so forcefully, the SSPX is not properly in schism. However, it is reasonable to assume that some of the members and parishioners are. We’re speaking particularly of the ones for whom Rome is entirely under the sway of Modernism. Those who are learning towards (or outright supportive of) sedevacantism or sedeprivationism.
Pastors must lead their flock away from that nonsense. They can’t pander to it.

It is something to consider. (DISCLAIMER: I am not saying, implying or believing, the SSPX are protestants) The SSPX does have this in common with both post reformation protestantism as, well as glass. Once the first crack occurs, subsequent ones follow easier. If history gives us any clue, some priest have already split off over the issue of the legitimacy of the papacy (SSPV). If the requirement for unity is more than some priest think is right, it is possible that some will split into another (SSPW?) group. If they do, they should not be judged in too harsh a light. We all have our foiables. They could also act on deep-seated, if mis-guided, convictions. What we can do, is in addition to praying for reunion, is to pray that whatever the conditions are, that all the holy priests of the SSPX will avoid the temptation to “lean onto their own understanding”, or as Pro Vobis pointed out, to be tempted to follow the money.

Let us all say a special rosary of glorious intent, in thanksgiving and hope for this possible aversion of schism within the Church. We need to be united now, more than ever, against the growing darkness of atheism, agnosticism, and paganism. May our holy religion proceed with peace and joy…
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et Benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora por nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen

I agree with you to a point. Inasmuch as the SSPX are in a less than ideal situation, they have that much less protection from the Church. However, since they are undeniably Catholic we can’t quite compare them to the Protestants who completely reject the Church and Her protections.
Interesting point though!

Yes. To be clear, I only compared them on that one point, along with glass, although I do not consider the SSPX transparent or suitable for windows. 😃

Good call. I would compare the Novus Ordo to a glass window more than the usus antiquior. 😉 Simple and transparent and a little brittle, though it does get the job done.

Except it is the SSPX that has splintered, not the “Novus Ordo”. It is also the SSPX that is the topic, as opposed to be another slam on the current Mass thread.
I criticize the Novus Ordo within the bounds of the Holy Church. Don’t get all bent out of shape about it.

As you can see from my post count, I’m not intimately familiar with the inner workings of this forum.
I totally understand. Here is a moderator sticky.

FYI - I am convinced that there is misbehavior on both sides. I do not want to see a moratorium on the issue, although we it is probably best to limit such discussions to those threads. My rule of thumb is that we should follow the advice of St. Paul in Philippians 2 as we pray for each and put the desires of others over our own both in our prayers and attitude. That means that if you do not approve of the SSPX, you should pray for their reconcilliation and desire that they not only are returned to regular status, but are returned in a way that is spiritually beneficial to them and those associated with them. Anyway, that is my approach.
